When it comes to relief pitchers they seem to have a type, don't they?

Qualification #1, must have been released from at least three different organizations in the past two years.

I look forward to his release later this week.

I'm just kidding.

Maybe.

Ryan and Gray will replace Sands and...someone...........the joy is, looks like the Twins may be establishing a rotating bullpen spot.

TYLER THORNBURG gets the call to the bullpen.

Whenever the Twins need a 40 man roster spot,, he will be DFA'd and see if he makes it past the other teams. That's how the 40th man is going to work. Probably good news for Cotton as he has moved up to #39. Also good news for Strotman.

ELLIOT SOTO is being brought in for infield depth. The guy was signed as a minor leagiue free agent after a dozen years playing ball. He was originally drafted in the 137th round of the 2007 draft by the Twins but didn't sign. He then signed with the Cubs in the 2010 draft, 16th rounder.

I’d like to see Sands immediately transitioned to relief with Woods-Richardson taking his place in the Saints rotation.

Sands 91 MPH FB isn’t going to get him into the teams top 6 starter territory since his command isn’t great, but maybe they can Jax-up that FB and slider velocity to work in the pen.

The Twins' website has Ryan on the active roster and Soto is not listed. However, I count 41 on the expanded roster and Palacios is still on that roster. Is that correct? If so, how can they carry 41 on the 40-man?

Palacios is a mistake. He was never added, as he was a covid replacement player. For whatever reason they still haven't removed him.

I'm almost afraid that Winder will stay in St. Paul and work exclusively as a starter (which would be good for him). Otherwise, who does he replace in the Twins bullpen?

Who does Sands replace in the Twins bullpen? I don't know, I suppose it depends on who's ineffective or injured. But usually these guys need a year to transition from starter to reliever before they're any good at it. So like Jax, I'd be hoping Sands' transition pays off next year. Him as a starter certainly isn't paying off this year.

As for Winder, he'll probably get at least one rehab game in St. Paul, but they let Chi Chi fly the coop, Gray and Ober are still on the shelf and Bundy is still terrible. I'd imagine he's going to be back in the MLB rotation in short order.

Did they even bother flying Soto out to Seattle?

He was active on the bench for Monday, which was the only day he was active. Seems like they just wanted to give him a cup of coffee, kinda like Drew Maggi last year.

Gray is scheduled to start this afternoon. Assuming he survives the start uninjured, the rotation is Ryan, Gray, Smeltzer, Archer and Bundy. Should Winder bump any of those? Most likely a pitcher is demoted/optioned before the game today.

I'd bump Bundy for him ASAP.

But the Twins have seemed more inclined to run with a 6 man rotation whenever feasible this year. I'd guess the Twins would still stick with Bundy in the rotation at least until Ober is ready.

My hope is that by the time Ober is back, the Twins were comfortable enough with the other young starters, like Varland or Woods-Richardson, that they'd let those guys be the 7th/8th starters and just set Bundy free.

Yes, I agree, but I doubt the Twins will do this

Six-man rotation doesn't work if pitchers aren't going beyond the 5th inning and your bullpen is only 7 arms.

The Twins have two off days still this month (one tomorrow). Then they have four off days besides the 5-day break for the All-Star game in July.

Wait! Maybe THAT would work to the favor of giving all the rehab pitchers short starts and the reduced size of a pen. What do people think?

Per FG, Jax had 4 relief appearances in 2021 and my recollection was that the Twins didn’t ask him to prep as a reliever until after the lockout.

Agreed on the limited initial expectations, but it feels like we’ve seen some rapid transitions to the pen before that were successful. Then again, my lens might be rose-colored

Duran as well. He started relieving just this year.

Necessity is the mother of rapid transitions.

There has been a lot of necessity.

Jax had four relief outings last year where he gave up 11 ER in 12 2/3 innings. I'd say he wasn't very good at it last year.

Sure, it can happen. Duran stepped right in. Taylor Rogers did too. Perkins, May and Duffey all needed at least one season to figure out the relief bit though; they all struggled mightily at first. But the guys who came up through the system as starters DO tend to end up being the Twins best relievers. And that's not a trend that's just specific to the Twins either.
