Twins Roster Moves-2022

Cotton back up only to be DFA'd later this month is what I think will happen. The 40 man roster could get interesting soon. Alcala will be coming back and I think the Twins will not cut ties with Sano this year. Palacios has played well enough that I now think he would get claimed. Strotman with yet another poor game last night. Makes no sense to DFA Godoy. Catchers get hurt and we will simply have to add another catcher to the 40 man when it happens. We may get to the point of DFA'ing Contreras and Strotman.

Palacios is a COVID replacement so he can be sent to the minors without being exposed. No need to add him to the 40-man roster at this point. Contreras most likely will get DFAed in order to bring up a non-roster player. Beckham and Steer are making cases for promotion. I wonder if Beckham has an opt-out.

They signed two starters and traded for two. How is that planning on the minors?

The two starters were reclamation projects, one of the SPs had serious elbow concerns prior to the trade, and the other isn't a stranger to the IL? Wasn't relying on the young arms the plan all along?

I doubt many of us were expecting Bundy and/or Archer to last in the rotation so that seems like an obvious "count on the minors," move. Paddack was a gamble, and we can argue about how calculated it was, but his elbow issue didn't sneak up on the Twins. Gray making an IL shouldn't be all that surprising. Winder was shut down with shoulder issues at the end of last season. Ober has struggled to stay consistently healthy going all the way back to his college days. Ryan is the only one I can really look at and think it's just plain bad luck.

It's a bummer that the injuries have clustered, and maybe that's the real issue, but looking at them on a case by case basis none of them should be all that shocking. There were plenty of us prior to the season, yourself included I believe, that questioned where some of these innings were going to come from based on staff construction.

According to Twins web site there are currently 42 on the 40 man roster. Not including those on 60 day IL. Palaciios is listed on the 40 man, although I don’t know when he was added. It says he was optioned to St. Paul.  Two bodies have to be dropped and Minaya is already off.

Palacios should be off the 40-man too, as a temporary COVID replacement.

Joe Ryan also doesn’t count against the 40 while he is on the COVID IL.

So they are all squared away now, until Ryan and Alcala need to be activated.

This should also open a 40-man spot soon (season-ending surgery for Stashak, presumably meaning he will be transferred to the 60-day IL as soon as necessary):

That’s too bad for Stashak. He’s been hit hard by the injury bug the last 2 seasons.

That is terrible news for Stashak.  By the time he starts getting things going he ends up hurt.  Labrum tears are also hard to come back from.  Man the injuries keep mounting.

That's a shame, and a tough one for a pitcher.

I also read that Alcala’s rehab has been halted ?

I see he last pitched for Fort Myers on 6/1. One can never be sure about pitching arm injuries. Many, myself included, had seen Alcala as a candidate to move into setup or closer roles.

Assuming Stashak and Lewis will be transferred to the 60 day on Saturday as Chi Chi is already listed as Saturday’s starter. He had an opt out for this week. Maybe Palacios for other spot.

No need to make a move on both of the guys out for the season and also no need to add Palacios. The Twins can make those moves when they need them. They will use up a 40-man spot for Gonzalez and they can recoup that spot if they decide they don't want to keep him on the roster. When Ryan returns, they can make room for him on the 40-man by transferring the second guy having season-ending surgery. I would suggest whoever pitches better between Sands and Gonzalez will stick around on the big league roster until either Ober or Winder is ready.

If the Twins still need to add 40-man space, I would suggest that Contreras and Strotman can and should be removed from the 40-man. Strotman has had precious few clean innings as a reliever and his stats are poor. Contreras isn't needed by the major league club and with Kirilloff seeming ready to come back to the majors, he wouldn't be the first OF recalled in the event of injury.

I thought Palacios was a COVID replacement for Ryan, so is he officially on the roster or not?

Yes, the Twins have some obvious dead weight on the 40-man. They have one open spot right now. Ryan and Gray will eplace Gonzalez and send down Sands.

They could basically jettison Contreras, Godoy and Strotman. There are other candidates who can contribute equally as well and might even be around in 2023.

Still not sure about temporary placement on the 40-man roster. My guess is that when the last COVID IL player (Ryan) is activated, then the temporary space on the 40-man roster goes away and Palacios is off the 40-man roster.

Gameday has Balazovic leaving the game tonight with an injury. Poor guy keeps getting injured. If it's bad and he is done for the year, can the Twins put him on the 60 day IL and add someone else to the 40 man roster?

They probably won't because they would have to pay him a major league salary instead of what he's making in  the minors.

TYLER THORNBURG gets the call to the bullpen. Recently signed free agent has pitched a couple of games in St. Paul after starting the season with the Braves.

The latest waiver wire replacement part.

Woof.

When it comes to relief pitchers they seem to have a type, don't they?

Qualification #1, must have been released from at least three different organizations in the past two years.

I look forward to his release later this week.

I'm just kidding.

Maybe.
