Robert Mark Sobolewski

Born: 12/24/86

Position: 3B

Bats: Right

Throws: Right

After the Blue Jays’ dealing and wheeling this past fall, Mark Sobolewski was left unprotected and the Twins picked him up in the Minor League phase of the 2012 Rule 5 Draft. “Sobo,” as his friends and family know him, appreciates the opportunity. He works hard and takes nothing for granted. In December of 2011, he was diagnosed with melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer.

Mark grew up in sunny South Florida. He graduated in the top 3% of his class at Sarasota High School where he played shortstop. He was selected by the Houston Astros in the 20th round of the 2006 Draft but did not sign. Instead, he played for the University of Miami, where he majored in Sports Administration.

The Toronto Blue Jays selected Sobolewski in the fourth round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft and has been in the minors ever since. In 2012, he played 94 games with the AA New Hampshire Fisher Cats of the Eastern League, batting .262, with 18 HR and 51 RBI. He also played 23 games with the AAA Las Vegas 51s of the Pacific League, batting .188, with 2 HR, and 8 RBI.

Sobolewski is currently playing third base with the AAA Rochester Red Wings. In 9 games, he is batting .182, with 1 HR, and 4 RBI. Barring an injury to Trevor Plouffe, it is unlikely that Sobolewski will make the big league club this year, but I’m looking forward to seeing some exciting play from the hot corner this summer at Frontier Field! I’ll be taking my sons to the ballpark quite a bit this season, and we will be rooting for Sobo, the player, and even more for Sobo, the man.

After a poor start, Mark Sobolewski has been demoted to AA New Britain.

I picked Mark after watching him play here in Rochester earlier this year and reading his story. I'm hoping he can get it together and come back up soon!

Sobolewski appears to be warming up slowly. He hit his first Rock Cats HR this week. In 7 games this May he is batting .250/.323/.429. The home park has not been very friendly as he is batting .174 at home compared to .278 away. Having 43 defensive chances, Sobo has committed 3 errors in 15 games with New Britain.

Mark is showing no resemblance to the Eastern League all-star of a year ago. He has 24 hits and 37 strikeouts in 127 at bats between Rochester and New Britain this year. With so many bright spots in the Twins farm system right now, the odds are probably greater of Mark being moved to another organization than playing for the Twins in the big leagues any time soon. I'm still hoping he can turn it around this summer.

There is not much to report here. Sobolewski is now doing worse in AA than he did in Rochester to start the season. He owns an anemic .178 average, batting .135 at home and .155 in night games.

Sobolewski is no longer playing every day. He is 3 for 34 in his last 10 games with no walks and 13 strikeouts. At this point, I think I have a better chance of getting a hit. #Disappointing
