Sano is currently batting .395 with a .449 OBP in 43 plates appearances over 11 games.

I've been thinking about big league comps for Sano. Everyone wants to make the Miguel Cabrera comparison, but I think that probably the best major league comparison is Giancarlo Stanton. The minor league numbers are pretty similar, particularly the power, batting average, and strike outs. I think its promising, that it appears so far that Sano appears to take more walks than Stanton ever did. Stanton was in AA ball by his 20th birthday, but I don't think Sano is far behind. Excluding an extended mid-season slump like last year (knock on wood), I think Sano is in AA-ball by the end of the season. I think Stanton is probably a much better outfielder than Sano will ever be at 3rd base, but I think the bat comparison is spot on. Frankly, I'd be thrilled if Sano turns out like Stanton.

Sano is having a GREAT year so far. All good stuff. He was even the Twins Twitter trivia question this week.

 

It will be interesting to see if he gets moved to AA this year or not. I read an 1500ESPN article on how he could hold his own in the majors right now (article here) and I am curious to see how many homers he'll hit this year.

 

My only concern is his defense - he didn't have a great year last year at 3B (committing 42 errors in 125 games) but I think they've been working with him on that. Not to rag on Trevor Plouffe at all, but I'm excited to see a third baseman come up that has a great bat and can play the bag well.

 

Still looking for more info on the movie and sequel - been a busy week at school...

I hate to bring it up and start the same conversation but when is it time to start moving some guys up? Buxton, Sano, and Rosario have all been very impressive and in Sano and Rosario's cases they have shown huge strides on defense. Just a though though, I'm not saying they "have to move them now!"

Pretty much every thread on here thinks most of the player movement will happen at midseason. Injuries requiring roster shuffling could lead to a move earlier though.

Hit #9 on Friday. Interesting that last season only 25 players hit more than 9 FSL homers all year. Only 10 hit more than 12. Another week or two like this and Miguel may force the Twins hand. With Levi Michael back in action, there are only so many innings available at 2B/SS for he, Rosario & Petterson to split. A Sano promotion could open the door at 3rd for Levi & Adam to prove their worth as potential Utility IF's down the road.

Apologies for the delay in posting this week - May is a busy month at school.

 

I'm still pretty new to following the minor leagues, but can they be called up from ANY of our affiliates? A, AA, AAA, etc? Or do they have to be at a certain location before being called up? I would imagine we may see Buxton and Sano before the season's over.

 

This week he was named Twinkie Town's Minor League Player of the Week and he continues to stay hot, with an average of .364. He's hit 9 homeruns so far on the year.

Today, Baseball Hot Corner posted an article about David Price and how the Twins could lure them into trading Price for Sano and Buxton. I'd really hate to see that happen, because I feel like all offseason it's been, "Don't worry, we have these awesome prospects coming up!" and if we trade them, we'll be let down. That's just my opinion. I'm not against Price at all, he's a great pitcher (and we need decent pitchers, since *cough cough* Worley hasn't been working out that well), but I don't like the idea of building towards the future only to have them be traded away.

 

Any thoughts on this? I guess this is just what I'm thinking currently.

As much as I like Price, and as much as I think Price would make this team instantly legit, I would bet good money that Terry Ryan would never do this. To make this trade viable, Ryan would also have to sign Price to a long-term extension and he would never give a pitcher a contract like the one Price would require.

 

And yes, the Twins can call up a player from any level they chose. Though rare, there has been a history of some players skipping the minors alltogether. While a Sano call-up this year is not an impossiblity, I wouldn't set the expectations too high, getting to AAA this year would even go against the grain for the Twins.

 

Buxton almost surely won't get called up. The Twins have a track record of keeping HS drafted players in the Midwest League for an entire season regardless of production. Buxton getting to Ft. Myers this year would be a rare occurance within this organization, though I think we may be in luck with that goal actually.

I am thinking if the Twins would probably need one of them and another B prospect. Sano and Buxton are both A prospects. I personally would NOT like to see either of them traded for Price. He would pretty much be a rental as their is little chance we could afford to bring him back. He is going to get the biggest contract ever given to a right handed pitcher. He is better and younger than Greinke (also no psychological issues). The Yankees and the Dodgers are going to bid so hard for this guy that the national guards of New York and California are going to get called in. I'll take my chances with developing Sano slowly and Buxton at a little faster pace. P.S. I would love to have multiple paragraphs, but the enter does not work while using explorer.

I was kind of thinking Sano stays the whole year to work on 3b. I was also thinking (hoping) that Buxton gets the nod after the futures game to go down (up in the system) to Ft. Myers. Buxton is slightly old for his school grade. I want to say he will be 20 in December so maybe the Twins make an exception. The fact that he is ripping up the Midwest League may also help them break their normal approaches.

From what I've seen on Twitter - Miguel has a bruised elbow from the HBP. Says he'll be out at least 2 days.

I don't think the Rays even call a meeting on that. Hell, if the secretary fields the call, she should know to say yes and fax the documents to the league office.

Thanks for keeping the thread going this week, guys - my grandfather passed, so I've haven't been able to get on here.

 

Down on the Farm listed the 5 top prospects, with Sano as #1. The article is here. Buxton is also listed, along with Alex Meyer, Kyle Gibson, and Oswaldo Arcia.

 

I honestly don't see the Price thing working out - I think it's just some smoke that was being blown around last week.

 

Sano has 10 homers in 30 games, and is currently batting .378. I missed out if he missed some games this week - my apologies.

According to Ryan in a spring training interview, the Rays asked for Sano straight up for Shields. Ryan turned them down flat. Based on that, I'm not surprised they'd ask for Sano and Buxton for Price. I just can't imagine the Twins doing that.

A little delayed, but I am now on summer vacation (woohoo!) so I will be able to stay a little more up to date here. Sano's batting average is at .349 and he hit homers in each of the games against Lakeland last week. Impressive. He is also leading high-A with 13 home runs so far. Most impressive. (Please tell me you guys got the Star Wars references...)

 

I did find this link for Rant Sports, and I'm not sure I fully agree with it. While yes, it would not cause any harm for Sano to have taken Plouffe's spot for the week, I still feel apprehensive since he hasn't played above high-A ball. I know he's totally ripping it up with the Miracle this year and maybe he IS ready, but I feel like promoting him would be hasty. Of course, if he rips it up while in the majors, that would be awesome. But I guess I worry he could go into a rut like Aaron Hicks or other prospects who have come up and not done well. Plus he's still young, so we have plenty of time to see him come up in the next year or two. I guess I want to see him play at least at the Double-A level before the season is over. Maybe a September call up could be interesting, and hopefully boost fan morale a little bit.

 

Here's an article from MLB Trade Rumors, saying how the organization has a strong start for the minor leagues. I guess I would like to see Buxton and Sano as potential candidates for a September call up, but nothing sooner. I know the Twins are back in the AL Central basement with little hopes to get out this year and I know some fans really want these guys up here NOW, but I say: Let's be patient. They will get their chance.

 

I guess with the Twins stinking, I should listen to the Miracle broadcasts more.

I think some people were upset he was sitting? Hey, come on, even our superstars need rest. Justin Morneau had the flu today yesterday (or today too, my days are mixed together right now). It happens. (I also hope that embedded right.)

 

Let's look at some numbers, shall we?

 

According to Baseball-Reference (my current best friend on stats), here's what we've got:

 

Batting average: .337

OBP: .431

In 52 games, he has had 190 at bats and still hanging out with 13 homeruns. Seems like he's cooled a bit, but that's okay, we're heading into the heart of the season here.

 

Charley Walters had a great article with the Pioneer Press from a couple days ago asking Terry Ryan about Buxton and Sano. It seems like people REALLY want these guys to come up. I stand by what I said last week - give it time. and that's what TR said, too. No time frame on these guys - be patient, Twins fans!! Enjoy games like today and yesterday! Pretend we don't have to play Detroit or the Yankees or so on.

 

Michael Rand (@RandBall on the twitter machine) posted a blog entry on the Star Tribune site about Buxton being the no. 2 prospect on ESPN.com and Sano being no. 6. Buxton moves up from being no. 22 when the season started to no. 2 and Sano moves from 11 to 6. I haven't been following Buxton TOO much here (since Sano is my guy) but I know he's been tearing it up in Cedar Rapids. I'm tempted to go down and see a game (it's only 5 hours away, you know...)

Per Twitter, Miguel Sano has been promoted to AA New Britain Rock Cats. He hit home runs 15 and 16 this weekend, with his BA at .330.
