Rosenthal: Meyer a strong return for Span?

FOX Sport's Ken Rosenthal pen's a few nice things about Alex Meyer. Among his tidbits is a quote from a scout:

I think he has a chance to be a true No. 1. You just don’t see arms like that very often.

Rosenthal in all writes a paragraph or seven on Meyer's repertoire, how the Twins should handle him and a quote or two from Terry Ryan.

The Meyer section is a little over halfway through the article. Rosenthal also opines on the Liriano-Escobar-Hernandez trade from last season near the bottom.

Yeah, a link would be nice.

But I doubt the Nationals care too much. They're absolutely loaded with pitching and Span is having a nice start to the season with them (.775 OPS, .400+ OBP).

I've always thought the trade was a wash and nothing has changed my mind. Both teams should be quite satisfied with the trade thus far.

The great part isn't that it's a wash but it was absolute perfect for both teams.

It's promising that the pitch he needs to work on is a changeup. If there's one thing Twins coaches can teach a pitcher, it's a friggin' changeup.

Nah, they'll be bugged that his change is coming in too fast, and they'll tinker until his fastball is down around 86 so that the offspeed pitch will be slow enough to fool major league batters. :)

By all accounts the Nats are very happy with Span and Meyer has yet to throw a pitch at "the major league level".

Maybe we should wait until he actually has some starts in the majors and proves he's the real deal before calling the trade one way or the other.

No one has said either side has won the trade yet. While Meyers has not thrown a pitch at "the major league level" that doesn't change the fact that he is one of the few pitchers in the minors who profiles as an ace. These dudes don't grow on trees. Heck, the current draft has only two college arms who profile as aces and they most likely will be gone in the first two picks. You have to give value to get value.

Careful, there are fans that might actually believe this. Although most of them comment at the star tribune site

No one declared a winner, maybe, but Brock calls it a wash, which I view as attempting to determine a winner and seeing it as even. WS wasn't reacting to nothing.

So we can't evaluate a trade until a prospect reaches the major leagues? While there's some truth to the notion, it's silly. IMO, getting a "potential ace" is a good get for a ML CFer, whether or not the potential is fulfilled.

At this point Meyer has the equivalent value of a very high draft pick that is a year or so away from the majors. That is probably better than any pitcher available to the Twins at #4 in the next draft as a comparison. Regardless of how Meyer turns out that was exactly what the Twins needed. If that isn't a good deal for the Twins then I'm baffled as to what it would take for it to be a good deal.

All young pitchers are a risk. Players with concussion history are a risk.

Highly respected young pitchers with great fastballs are almost impossible to acquire.

Lead off hitting center fielders with reasonable contracts also difficult to acquire.

A good and wise trade for both teams. Meyer may hurt his arm. Span may be concussed. That won't change the wisdom of the trade for either side.

It's a wash talent-wise, but not in terms of control. Barring injury, Meyer will be in the Twins rotation from 2014 through 2019. Span's contract runs through 2016.

The Nationals are World Series contenders. They're not worried about 2019 right now. They needed a centerfielder and they got a pretty good one in Span.

Both teams walked away from the deal with exactly what they needed/wanted.

In other words, a wash.

No he read it fine. People were getting dangerously close to saying something positive or admitting competence on behalf of the front office. That can't stand without some kind of response.
