I guess it's what you define as "old"

Well, I’m 60, but I don’t feel a day over 59. I asked a friend if I was considered a young old, or an old middle aged. It was a confounding question but went with a young old, because I don’t think I’ll live to the age of 120 to be middle aged

In Chicago it’s officially over at 3, but they don’t get to my neighborhood to open up the streets until around 3:30-4 … you see a few stragglers on the sidewalks at that point

Our marimba band used to play for the Portland Marathon. Super fun gig. Our spot was early on the course (mile 3?); we started playing at 7:15 to some unhappy neighbors. Our spot was on a pedestrian bridge over the four-lane road on which they ran right under us. Everyone had so much energy and was cheering our songs! And they were all close together so in less than an hour we were done and heading for breakfast.

Then the Portland Marathon went broke and was recreated temporarily, then permanently under new management. We played one year at a spot in mile 23. The runners were so spread out that they had two bands playing for two hours each. We were second, and played for a trickle of exhausted mostly-walkers at that point. Much less fun. The new management has not called us back. :(

How many marimbas constitute a band?

You know what they say about the best pitchers; get 'em early or you're not going to get 'em at all.

Rich Hill settling in! :)

I had some buddies who have/had a very part-time band. During the marathon they were literally a garage band. (mid-May in Fargo). They played "Eye of the Tiger" for two hours straight.

That's 'cause they cheaped out and hired that sucky kazoo band.

It can vary, but most of the bands in the PNW (there are at least a hundred) have about 7. Three sopranos, two tenors, a baritone, and a bass, which is a huge piece of equipment. Our bass is about 8 feet long with 10 keys and stands off the ground so that you stand on a platform to play it.

The instruments are "white-keys only," though a lot now have F#s. We play mostly Zimbabwean music, either folk songs or modern compositions by the plethora of Zimbabwean and South African marimba composers. We use no music and memorize our (often drone-like repetitive) parts along with the cues and signals for the changes. Lots of fun!
