What To Do With Miguel Sano

Yea Rod specifically mentioned they recommend that he have a little more knee bend in his stance in order to keep his head from moving down during the swing. He won’t do it. To me this is typical of Sano and the real reason to be worried. He’s done this how many times yet we don’t change anything.

I love Sano but my epiphany on him came a few years ago, in a plate appearance against Chris Archer in fact.

All of us had already seen the same streaky Sano by that time, either locked in or zoned out. Sano was in one of his slumps, and Archer worked him to 1-2, then 2-2. Then I thought “yup, here comes the high outside fastball waste pitch, followed by slider low and away on 3-2, for swing and a miss,” and... that’s what happened.

I’ve only seen one game so far this season but I assume Sano still hasn’t changed much, otherwise this thread wouldn’t be here. :)

I think Sano is fine, there’s nothing really “wrong” with him, but he just doesn’t see the pitch out of the pitcher’s hand as well as the average MLB-er. So it takes Sano that extra moment to recognize the spin, get his body in motion, and by that time, it’s too late. So, knowing all of this, he makes up his mind to swing a tiny bit earlier than he should (also accounting for all the check swings we have seen over the years).

Anyway that’s just one idea.

Put him on the bench and leave him there until he's traded or the end of the season. He's a mistake that has been around too long already and has hurt the team enough. I'd much rather see Urshela or Arraez or Miranda getting his at bats and if they are hitting more than Sano, which wouldn't be difficult, I'd live with one of them learning 1st base defensively, then I at least have someone contributing on offense. 1st base is not a hard position to learn.

Does Sano have an option left?  Might not be the worst idea to send him down to AAA to, hopefully, get straightened out.

No.  He does not have an option remaining.  Best case scenario, he gets going and is traded at the deadline.  If not, he is going to playout the year and get bought out for 2.75M at the end of the season.

I made this comment a week ago on another thread, so apologies for repeating, but it's relevant here. Rod Carew was in the booth for a couple of innings of a spring game and commented on Arraez (very complementary)

Really comparable styles at the plate between the great one, Mr Carew, and Arraez.  both great eyes, only swing at strikes and are high contact rate---sometimes even slap hitters.  Wish Arraez had the legs on the basepaths that Carew did---but lets don't spoil the good we see.  Arraez is an adpater, as well.  Would like to see him play a stretch at one position.  He drives himself hard---i think some stability would just serve to settle his mind and increase his productivity.

Sano? My opinions are well documented.  He's not worth the ink.  Move on.
