Looks like still have to cut a pitcher. Who?

I just added it to my post ... Stashak to the IL and Jax sent down ... although I haven't seen that officially announced ... that was an answer to my question to Dan Hayes on twitter

I'm a fan of Celestino, but wasn't sure he'd done enough in Spring Training to convince people that he could be the 4th OF. Guess I was wrong? Hopefully his good results in AAA, having experienced MLB before, and being in a bit of a lower-pressure spot (not being expected to start) positions him to do well. If he can hit like his minor league track record suggests, then he's a fine fit as the 4th OF who can play all three spots and protect Kirilloff & Kepler against the toughest LHPs.

It's going to be very interesting to see how they handle Winder: hopefully they have a better program for him than they did Dobnak where they really didn't have programmed time in for him. If he's not going to pitch, he needs to be sent down, so hopefully they have a schedule in mind for him to piggyback starts?

I don't think the Twins saw enough either. They only gave him 7 spring ABs. I would assume the Twins are looking at FA or waiver wire to replace him. Upton, Adolfo, etc. I'd be very surprised if Celestino is on the roster past opening day

I think Rooker was nearly guaranteed to get the spot, they traded him, now back to the drawing board

I think Celestino will be fine. He really did well in the latter half of the AAA season, after being called up to the Twins prematurely without AAA experience. I had, however, wanted him to play at least another half season in AAA, but, until they get another fielder ... which makes me wonder about the other part of the Hayes tweet regarding Upton

Celestino will get play as the Twins really don't have a DH and Kirilloff will get split time at 1B when Sano is the DH. Plus, he can spell Buxton and Kepler well. Yes, would like to see him play ahrd everyday, but he did pay his dues well at St. Paul last season. He's also a decent base-runner. Betetr than putting Gordon or Arraez out there, who can also funnel thru the DH position.

With six starters and his disasteroius last outing, Jax is really not an inning eater plus for the Twins at the moment. His job, now, is to be a bonifide long-relief guy at St. Paul. She you can take regular calls for 2-3 innings.

Have no idea who will close for the Twins. And be interesting to see what happens May 1 when two guys have to go back to the minors.

Celestino is an odd choice. Anyone know what his numbers vs lefties were in the minors last year?

Calling him up from St Paul means they were going to give the job to Rooker. I would think Upton is a real possibility.

I don't think Celestino is an odd choice as a backup outfielder. He hits right, so could relieve Kepler or Kirilloff versus a tough lefty and he's sound defensively, with the ability to play center in the event that Buxton is out.

I don't think either Rooker or Garlick was a good fit. Neither is a plus fielder, with Rooker being in well-below average range. Rooker hasn't hit left handed pitching either in the minors or the majors and Garlick wasn't on the 40-man roster, which was a problem and also says something about his overall ability. Neither guy stepped up in the abbreviated spring training. Rooker's trade gives them a chance to reconsider Celestino, who is the best fit as a fourth outfielder.

I'm happy with this.

When does Friday get here? I'm ready!

Until they sign Upton, remove someone on the 40-man and send Celestino back to AAA ... although that isn't likely to happen before tomorrow ... so ... cheers! And GO TWINS! :)

He is like Simmons , good fielder, no bat.

Not much for power that's for sure. But he did have an .827 OPS in St. Paul last year. He had a bit of a strange journey, he was a pretty modest hitter in AA, got called up to the majors and didn't hit, but then went to AAA and  was a better player than he was in AA. I think Celestino is still solidly a TBD.

He's all over the place so I have no idea what to expect. 2018, better against RHP. 2019, better against LHP. 2021, neutral.

*shrugs*

I am all for Celestino as 4th OF.  He can play all 3 spots, and hopefully will not need to play much other than late inning defense or runner for Kiroloff.  This does not cost moving a guy off of 40 man to bring in Garlick to be a platoon in right with Kepler.

I am wondering where these Upton rumors are coming from. I want nothing to do with him.  He would add nothing to the OF, if we wanted a player like him we can just use Garlick who is not as bad on defense.  Yes, Upton still can hit lefties so could provide some platoon split with Kepler, but he is very bad on defense at this stage in career. I will admit his numbers against LH has been good, but do you risk losing someone off 40 man for a guy that should only play against LH pitchers with no other value?

If the Twins are going to take a hitter out for defense, it should be Sano, with Kirilloff moving to first. With the reinstatement of the ghost runner in extra innings, Rocco should be more eager to get his best defenders in the game in late innings, because the probability of a replaced player like Sano having his turn in the order come up in extra innings is now pretty small.

Upton has not been even ok for a long time for someone who will be in his age 34 season.  Please no.

I don't think anyone had Winder and Duran making the Opening Day roster... but I suppose with expanded rosters, it was inevitable that they had to carry some 40 man guys.

It looks like Jhon Romero made the team over Jax. I imagine he'll have a pretty tight leash, and could easily be the guy to be DFA'd when we need another 40 man spot open.

Was surprised Jax got hit so hard especially when he started out so well. I guess when you give up 6 runs in a Spring Training game to non-starters it is hard for the team to rely on that arm against real MLB players. So not much of a choice but to send him down.  He always looked like a bit of long shot considering there are better options behind him.  Hopefully he figures it out and we see him again yet this season but not surprising he got sent down IMO.

I am surprised Celestino made the 28 man.  He fits what they need defensively but I am still not convinced he is ready offensively.  Hopefully they don't just stick him on the bench and he becomes a platoon partner with Kepler as well as a backup to Buxton.
