Twins trade Rogers, Rooker to Padres for Paddack, Pagan

I’m still on the fence about this … I want to see the final roster. With Rooker out of the equation, do they just go with Gordon as our 4th OF and carry yet another pitcher for the next month and see what sticks?

I wonder if the Twins will be going to more of a Tampa Bay model this year.  Lots of pitchers that can go 2-3 innings an outing.  I think they were worried about filling out enough innings.  With as many question marks as we have,  and the likelihood they can only go 2-3 innings to start the season,  this is likely a smart move for Rodgers 60-80 innings this year with additional control.  As an aside I doubt Manea was the target we were looking at.

Reportedly the final version of the trade also includes us sending some cash to SD, and we get the infamous "PTBNL".

Ooooo PTBNL.... MLB version of a disappointing sequel that comes out after much delay

I knew I had seen this kid before. (NSFW: There's language.)

It's Not Up!

BTW, Jomboy has basically become The Simpsons. You haven't officially made it until he makes a video about you

That wasn’t exactly an inspiring Paddock moment, but the face in glove stuff, lol

Ok, Ill express my opinion...

Giving up 1 year of an aging reliever that we are not sure will be the guy we knew and an outfielder that hasn't fully latched on and will soon be pushed aside by Larnach and others in AAA for 3 seasons of 2 young pitchers is definitely a good move. Now it is up to the coaching to unlock and unleash the potential of those (and many other) young pitchers.

This leadership team was brought in as pitching guru's to change the course of Minnesota baseball and develop young pitchers and create a pitching pipeline. This to me is a make or break year on this whole plan. Either we are surprised by the wonderful results of several (not necessarily all) young pitchers and reclamation projects or this year will go up in flames. The proof will be in the pudding. One more day to wait for them to start proving it.

*EDIT* Ok, Pagan isn't young... guess I should have looked closer at his bio before writing this...

Yes, and as a few others have stated, so was the guy in Milwaukee.

"2 young pitchers"??

Pagan is 30 years old. 31 in a month.

The "aging" Rogers is 31.

Rogers and Pagan are virtually the same age -- Rogers turned 31 in December, Pagan will turn 31 in May. Pagan does have 1 more year of team control, due to reaching MLB 1 year later. (Although if Pagan doesn't improve upon his 2020-2021 performances, he's a likely non-tender candidate for that final arbitration season.)

They were reportedly still in talks with the A's for Montas yesterday, but I suppose that one is a dead issue now.

I don't think it means that yet. This move would not prevent a deal for Montas.  If the A's made an offer the the Twins that was acceptable, they'd still do it regardless of this move.

I have a sense that the A's are going to wait until closer to the trade deadline to move Montas anyway.

Problem with this analysis is that it counts the free agents coming in (Correa, Smith, Archer, Bundy) but the Out column doesn't list Simmons, Pineda, Astudillo and whoever else I am forgetting.  And of course the shiny new additions will always look better than the known quantities departing.  If the list as given implies there's this massive influx of major leaguers, it's a little skewed.

Good point! I'm wondering why Park didn't include offseason FA departures and just focused on essentially Spring trades

He works on a deadline and didn't have the luxury of mulling over how it looked before pressing Post. :)

As far as I'm concerned... Simmons never did exist.
