REPORT: Twins Working to Acquire Padres RHP Chris Paddack

Recommended Posts

From MLB Trade Rumors Site: "The Twins and Padres are in agreement on a trade that will send left-handed reliever Taylor Rogers to San Diego and starter Chris Paddack to Minnesota, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports (Twitter thread). The two parties were reportedly in talks on a deal last night. Other players were apparently involved in those talks, but the final iteration of this morning’s trade is not yet clear. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic tweets that the Twins will also acquire right-hander Emilio Pagan as part of the swap."

My initial reaction was S***! I really liked Rogers. I guess they have a lot of faith in Duran and Alcala.

Nice to see FO still trying to improve what most of us believe is a very iffy rotation.  The Pads would seem like a good trade partner with their excess of starters now.  And Paddock would probably be an upgrade over either Archer or Bundy, but does he really fill the glaring need of a strong #2?  His falloff from his rookie year leaves too many questions to answer.

If the FO wants to really move the needle, they should focus on either Snell or Musgrove, particularly the latter.  Rocco is very familiar with Snell and should be able to assess whether he is in a downhill trend or a good bounceback candidate.  Musgrove would be the ideal choice, but to pry him loose would probably take a Kepler/Rogers combo.  As others have mentioned, Lamet would be a nice chip to add to bolster the bullpen.  Perhaps by taking on Hosmer's contract, the Twins could land both these guys.

No sense in adding another #4 or 5 starter to the long list we already have, especially not for Rogers - our lone closer.  Go big or stay home.

If you think the Padres would give up a big time prospect like Gore for a year of control (at over 7 mil, I believe), I think you're mistaken.

I was speaking more to Gore's current prospect standing (and shiny new thing status...) which is pretty low right now.  Gore has a ton of talent, but the key will be whether or not he ever is able to cash in on that at the major level is unknown.

His manager last year happens to be the Twins bench coach.

And the Padres fired him!  We are full of reclamation projects already.  The TWINS clinic is open send us all your pitchers who have lost velocity, gotten confused, been mediocre for a few years - we are ready and Dr Wes will fix them unless they are Perez, Albers, Gant, Shoemaker, Happ, Bailey...

Guess I was a little late in my comments.  Like Tony and Rodney said - WTF!  Strengthen the back end of the rotation, severely weaken the pen!  Sort of a microcosm of FO's offseason.  Unless they have another significant add to the pen, our late inning situation now looks as precarious as our rotation.  Duran and Alcala better step up big or look out below!

He knows baseball and is a good coach... probably not a good head coach, but that doesn't take away from his abilities.

I will take your opinion, I do not know much about him or any of the other 15 coaches.  What do they all do?   Anyway Paddack was 4 - 5 4.73 era and  7 - 7 5.07 during Tingler's two years in SD.  Wow.

This trade looks ominous for too many reasons to put down. TD has been screaming to give innings to the prospects such as Winder, Balazovic, etc. Are we now going to hear they all need a few more years of AAA experience? We traded JD because of money (small market?) or his personality? This sets up a possibility of summer trading activity. Could Sanchez, Sano, Correa, Gray, Kepler, and Polanco all bring in some solid prospects to raise our farm system above its current level? Rogers didn't want to sign an extension? San Diego was desperate to trade Paddock for anything. I guess the Twins are good guys and accommodating as well.

I am hoping that this is a ploy to shake loose Montas. IMO the Twins may have the best offer for Montas and if OAK thinks we are looking somewhere else they could finally wake up. Could this really be? I hope so.

Nope. I have over estimated this FO but I really like the trade they came up with. It's a lesser trade than I hoped but I think we came up with more than what we lost. Of course it's tough to give up Taylor but hopefully Paddock can take that next step

True, can't argue the stat part.  Maybe Paddack won't work out,  but I for one am not going to hope for it and choose to believe that he can be a positive addition (unless he isn't).  So for what it's worth, welcome aboard kid... there's the bump.  Now let's go do good things :).

giving away Rooker doesnt matter..BUT, we now have no closer whatsoever.. At least Rogers was somewhat trustworthy. Now who closes???  there is no one to trust.. i havent seen Duran enough to judge..but IMO we have a very low rated bullpen..not enough guys that miss bats. Looks like if the Twins want a winning season they will have to be scoring 8 plus a game and hope we can hold opponent to 7 !!!

Ok, but GMs don't assess trades as you had laid it out, which is why such a deal wouldn't have and didn't happen.

Interesting,  shows a lot of faith in Duran and Alcala.  Rodgers was not being extended anyway, so cashing is the correct play.

they keep bragging up Alcala...he gives up way too many gopher balls

Most likely not... Which is probably a good thing. The image of a rubbish bin with an excessive amount of heat will not leave my mind when I picture me as a GM. ??‍♂️?
