I think @Brock Beauchamp said essentially the same thing... but Sano owned a wRC+ of 91 at the All Star break. Cruz comes with a more stable track record and he's cheaper. Guessing 1 year $8MM, assuming he doesn't retire. I think he may have to settle for much less if the season is delayed (which is appears is marching towards increasingly likely) as I think the perception is older players take more time to get up to speed on the reflexes, etc. If the lockout continues much longer, I could see Cruz needing to take a 1 year $5MM deal with incentives.

I have never been a Sano fan and have nothing but admiration for Nelson Cruz.  However, was not even addressing Sano's relative merit.  My point was that when a 40+ y/o players has a 2nd half like Cruz did, front offices are likely going to be very concerned father time has finally caught up with him.  I guess the net of it is still that Sano is not all that attractive as a trade candidate but not because of Cruz.

The only problem here, in your proposed lineup, is you've doubled up at either 1B or DH. Someone has to play LF. But I generally agree with your post.

Is this the year where Rooker suddenly grows as a ML hitter, improves his defense even a little bit, and proves his milb career and flash in 2020 is for real?

Larnach and Celestino were brought up too early. I honestly believe in BOTH of them.

IMO, that leaves Kirilloff as a part-time LF/1B and Sano splitting time at 1B/DH. I think Miranda is the real deal. He's not some flier who had a "fortunate" season. Doesn't mean he has to be handed a spot. Nothing wrong, everyone healthy, with him waiting for an opportunity after the season starts. Again, you need more than just 13 guys all season. Opportunity will be there.

Sorry to be clear I was saying JD (3B), some SS, Polanco(2B), Sano(1B), AK(LF), Buxton(CF), Kepler(RF), Garver(C), and Arraez (DH) and a rotation of AK, Sano, Garver, Polanco (with Arraez and/Gordon getting playing time at second) at DH. You know be creative with the players. And if Miranda tears it up in spring training there will be plenty of playing time in this rotation for him, 3B, 1B, DH. You can always fine spots for guys playing well, Rocco should be able to figure that out.

Rooker is 27, there is just as good a chance that Sano's gets "it" than him. If Rooker was a few years younger I might be willing to bet on him over Sano, but no chance I do now.

And now people are talking about bringing up Austin, I would hope the FO has learned a little bit from that. (bringing guys up to early, or leaving Plan B as bringing up guys to early)

Are you saying there can be a plan A and a plan B for the offense going into the season? Instead of just throwing out rookies and crossing your fingers, and if they fail plan B would be the Cave's, Broxton and Telis's of the world being run though MPLS?

Somehow, someway, the Twins are going to need to add "at minimum" 2 SP's that they can count on giving them about 150 innings.  Rodon is about the only SP worth signing at this point point (and I see a Dodgers/Yankees/Red Sox having the financial wherewithal to afford a signing if things don't work out health-wise for Rodon).  Maybe Danny Duffey if he's healthy.  Pineda is certainly in the mix.  But "someone" is going to need to be traded in order to add at least one of those SP's.  I could see the Miami Marlins wanting a big bat for DH.  Maybe they take a chance on Cruz.  If I was the Miami GM, that's what I would do, rather than trade pitching to acquire JD or Sano.  I will be very interested to see if the DH enhances the trade value of JD or Sano on BTV.  But at this point, I see more value in KEEPING JD and Sano (and trading Arraez who could bring back a better SP than either JD or Sano) and rolling with the sluggers until the trade deadline.  How is the season going for the Twins at that point ?  What rookies and young players like Kiriloff, Miranda, Jeffers, Larnach and others are contributing ?  Who looks over matched ?  I guess I'm of the mind to be a little patient right now with the sluggers.  Of course, I'll listen to anybody's offer...you never know.

As with any trade, it all depends upon the return.  I do not see how trading Donaldson and/or Sano helps if all we get is a lottery ticket.  Even if we save some money, who is available to sign in free agency, and who would replace these two bats?  The free agent pitchers are pretty much gone.  Now, having said that, if they trade Donaldson and Sano, and use the savings to sign Trevor Story, that would be a good return.  A lineup with Story, Buxton, Polanco, Garver, Kirilloff, Arraez and maybe Miranda could be formidable.  But, as noted in many comments, we still are two pitchers short.  So, we would need to trade for two pitchers, at least one of whom could front the rotation.  In my humble opinion, the front office really messed up by not getting at least one significant free agent pitcher.  It would have made things much easier.

What about paying Story with Donaldson's money once JD is traded to the NL?

I'd much rather they pay Story with the $40M they have left between last year's payroll and the current payroll. No pitchers available on the FA market or trade market that cost so much they can't throw a ton at Story and still bring in an arm or 2. (I'm not a Rodon believer. Chicago didn't even put a qualifying offer on him and that says they don't think he's got any chance of being healthy and good.)

Absolutely correct if their goal / strategy / plan is to build a meager chance to contend in 2022.  They will have to find a couple very good SPs to contribute the IP you mentioned.  If their goal is to retool this year and build a contender from within these additions would probably limit their opportunities to get major league IPs for prospects.  So, far it would not appear their plan is the former.

I would strongly consider offering Rodon a large one year deal but I’m also not a Rodon believer. It’s more of an act of desperation than a move I like. Still, I’d consider one year but I doubt that gets it done. Someone will offer 2-3 seasons, I suspect.

I just don't know why someone would offer Rodon even 20M on a 1 year deal when the team he just had his career year with who's trying to win a world series wouldn't even risk him accepting a 1 year 18.4M deal. It's entirely possible they think Keuchel is going to bounce back or one of their flame throwing relievers can step into the rotation, but if you're the sox and you're trying to win a world series and you think Rodon can be good again don't you try to bring him back? That's a huge red flag to me.

Oh, I agree, I'm just saying that after missing out on every other starting pitcher with upside, I'd be willing to take what I consider a not-smart risk on Rodon.

Obviously, that was not my first choice when the season ended but it's the option that's remaining.

Since it looks like the FO has opted to punt for 2022 (I realize the offseason isn't quite over yet - or is it?), I think trading Donaldson to make way for Miranda's rookie year sounds really good. But unless the offer for Sano knocks me over, I'd keep him at least until the trade deadline. I think he's got two great seasons yet somewhere ahead for him.

I'm really hesitant trading Donaldson or Sano this off season, because their trade value is sooo low. We won't get anything for them plus the Twins will have to ante up some $. My hope is that Sano' become more constant with hitting and Donaldson would solve his calf problem. I don't want to rush Miranda or place Arraez as every  day 3B, I like Donaldson around to mentor Miranda (I don't think his salary is a problem right now). The trade deadline might be a more appealing time to trade and more advantagious.
