FanGraphs: Joe Ryan has Plenty of Margin for Error

Jake Mailhot from FanGraphs wrote today about Twins pitching prospect Joe Ryan:

There are some fascinating charts on his fastball's pitch characteristics and shape, but also on its approach angle... and why he can and should be successful for the long-term.

Check it out and discuss.

Ober and Ryan both had fun writeups on Fangraphs and the analysis explains what we saw of each pitcher. Despite different styles, Ober and Ryan seem to have managed to shape their repertoires to strengths and when they maintain control each can be quite successful. Personally, Ober seems like he might be stronger in 2022 because he gained more experience last year but Ryan also seems to have a bright future. Now if the Twins can add two solid pitchers to support Ober, Ryan, and the others who will get their feet wet this summer the Twins will have a team to watch.

Fantastic writeup on Ryan.  I learned a lot from that article.  It is interesting how analytics is evolving as we try to better understand the pitch characteristics that lead to success.  VAA is a relatively new concept for me, and this article really explains it well.  It also is interesting that the article points out that Ryan's secondary stuff is much better than was originally advertised.  This confirms what most of us saw last summer.

Interesting, very interesting.  But way to technical for this old guy.

The main point I took from this is that the Twins may believe they are a lot closer to filling out their starting five than most fans realize.  Could Ryan, Ober and Dobnak be in their plans and in ink?  If so, might they actually be good?

Add Bundy and they are very close.  Wouldn’t it be a shocker if Ryan turned out like all those young Cleveland guys we dream about and leads this staff to a top third AL starting five?

SSS notwithstanding, after what we saw last summer I don't know that I'd call it a shocker regarding just Ryan. Having a top-5 rotation? That would be way shocking.

Shocking to me would be if the Twins somehow avoid seeing all their pitching prospects blow out their arms. Maybe they should all be throwing sidearm like Walter Johnson and Bob Feller.

Did Feller throw sidearm?  Don't remember that.  Do remember that he was a good shot when shooting ducks.  Bagged several one morning in our marsh with the guys from Milwaukee brought him up to hunt with them.

I watched a Feller video, and he threw kind of high sidearm, but his back bent over to the left, making the delivery more like a 3/4ths. My point was that he avoided a delivery that stresses the high side of the shoulder joint. That's where a lot of pitchers tear the rotator cuff, on the upper side.
