A new Baseball Year Has Begin. Spring Training MAY be coming up in less than two months. But, as a lockout continues, 40-man rosters have been set for all teams. There are still free agents looking for work, and Rule 5 draftees to be added to rosters.

 

I suggest we wait until camps break in April to see who is in the minor league systems for real, although there have been many minor league free agent signings of former Twins, some foreign departures, and the Twins will probably have many names still cut from their organization that will end up in what is now called Indy Ball leagues.

FORMER TWINS WITH OFF-SEASON MAJOR LEAGUE CONTRACTS

 

RYAN PRESSLY (Astros). The Twins grabbed Ryan as a Rule 5 player in the 2012 draft from the Red Sox. He pitched from 2013-18 with the Twins, then was traded to the Astros for Jorge Alcala and Gilberto Celestino.

 

LAMONTE WADE (Giants). Signed by Twins in 2015. Played for team in 2019-20. Traded to Giants in 2021 for Shaun Anderson.

 

JAKE ODORIZZI (Astros). Began his career with the Royals in 2012. Traded by the Rays to the Twins for Jeremaine Palacios in 2018. Pitched for three years and became a free agent, signing with the Astros in 2021.

 

AARON HICKS (Yankees). Drafted by Twins in 2008. Played centerfield from 2013-15. Traded to Yankees in 2015 off-season for John Ryan Murphy.

 

JOSE BERRIOS (Blue Jays). Signed by Twins in 2012. Pitched for Team 2016-21. Traded to Blue Jays in summer 2021 for Austin Martin and Simeon Woods-Richardson.

 

BRUSDAR GRATEROL (Dodgers). Minnesota Twins Prospect 2014-19 playing with Team in 2019. Traded to Dodgers in spring of 2020 with Luke Raley and future draft pick consideration (Dodgers chose Clayton Beeker with the slot pick) for Kenta Maeda and Jair Camargo.

 

EDUARDO ESCOBAR (Mets). Signed by White Sox 2006. Traded to Twins in 2012 along with Pedro Hernandez for Francisco Liriano. Played for Team 2012-18. Traded to Diamondbacks in 2018 for Ernie de la Trinidad, Jhoan Duran and Gabriel Maciel. Traded by Diamondbacks to Brewers in 2021. Signed as free agent with Mets in off-season.

 

JASON CASTRO (Astros). Was signed as a free agent and played with Twins from 2017-2019. He previously played six seasons for Houston. He signed with the Angels, played for the Padres, and came back the Astros last season.

 

ROBBIE GROSSMAN (Tigers). Signed by Pittsburgh in 2008. Played for Astros in 2013-15. Signed and released by Indians and signed by Twins in 2016 playing for them until 2018. Signed as free agent by the A's in 2019 and the Tigers in 2021.

 

JONATHAN SCHOOP (Tigers). Signed with the Orioles 2008. Played for the Brewers in 2018. Signed as a free agent by Twins in 2019 . Became a free agent signing with the Tigers in 2020.

 

RICH HILL (Red Sox). Signed by the Cubs in 2004. Pitched for the Cubs, Orioles, Red Sox, Indians, Angels, Yankees, A's, Dodgers, Rays and Mets. Pitched in minors for Nationals and Cardinals rehabbing. Signed as a free agent with the Twins in 2020. In 2022 will mark his third stint with the Red Sox.

 

LANCE LYNN (White Sox). Signd by Cardinals in 2008, pitching for them 2011-17. Signed as a free agent by the Twins for 2018. Traded during 2018 season to New York Yankees for Luis Rijo and Tyler Austin (and cash). Signed by Rangers for 2019 season and traded in 2021 season to White Sox.

 

KYLE GIBSON (Phillies). Signed by Twins 2009 and played for Team 2013-2019. Granted free agency in 2020 and signed with Rangers. Traded to Phillies in 2021.

 

ZACK LITTELL (Giants). Signed by Mariners 2013 then traded to Yankees organization. Traded to Twins along with Dietrich Enns for Jaime Garcia in 2017. Pitched for Team 2018-20. Signed as a free agent with the Giants for 2021.

Great lists.  I am blown away by the coaching list.

Who would you want back from the active players? 

• Pressly, Graterol, May, Littell, Berrios, Lynn, and Hendriks would certainly be great additions to the pitching staff.
• LaMonte Wade over Jake Cave - definitely.  Otherwise our bats are strong enough that the list does not have players that would substantially improve us.

I think there are currently 2 open spots on the 40-man, and only 6 outfielders (16 position players total), so barring a better addition by some other means I would also take back Baddoo.  I like having lots of options with players who have options.   And Baddoo won't even be 24 until late this coming season, so we don't really know yet what his ceiling is.  His 2021 would have been a "substantial" improvement over the collection of performances in LF.

It might not mean anything to you, but for many of this we find the nostalgia and the movements within the game to be fascinating.

I get it but usually these lists are meant as an indictment of management which is why I like to point out that most teams in most sports can make similar lists.

Sometimes, but not everyone thinks that way about it.  My take is it's just cool to follow the game in all it's little details.

For example, my son's future college coach (he's a 2022 Grad) pitched for Pepperdine University, and was actually drafted by the Twins and made it as far as AA and then was plucked away in the Rule 5 draft and pitched for the Mets in 91' or 92'.

I get it that not everyone geeks out about that stuff, but it's just part of the game that many of us love.

THE FRONT OFFICE.

 

SAM FULD (2014) is now the General Manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. President of the Phillies is former Twins GM Andy MacPhail (1985-1994) and Terry Ryan (Twins GM twice and basically with the organization from 1994-2016 after starting as a minor league player 1973-76) continues to work as a special assistant to Andy.

 

Jack McKeon is now a special assistant to the GM of the Nationals after an illustrious career with the Royals, Padres, Astros, Reds and Marlins on the field and in the front office. People forget he started as the AAA manager for the Twins back in 1962-63.

 

BILLY BEANE had a movie made about him (Moneyball) and was a highly regarded Mets prospect traded to the Twins in 1986 and sent packing the next season to Detroit. He became a Scout with Oakland in 1990 and rose to their highest decision-making job. Offers pour in, but he stays with the A's. CHRIS PITTARO, who played with Beane in Minnesota, has been a longtime scout and special assistant in the A's organization since 1991.

 

RANDY BUSH still gets mail with the Cubs, who he joined in 2005 after college coaching. He played for the Twins from 1982-1993. He was the Cubs interim general manager in 2011. Now a senior advisor to the team. BOB TWEKSBURY is some sort of Mental Issues coach with the Cubs.

 

BOB GEBHARD is still in the game working as a special advisor in the St. Louis Cardinals front office. A Twins pitcher in 1971-72, he also played for the Expos and then worked with the farm system, joining MacPhail as assistant general manager of the Twins from 1987-91. He was then being named General Manager of the Rockies from 1992-99, and the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2005.

 

Longtime Twins trainer Tony Leo is now a trainer with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He started with the Twins in the minors in 1998, and was the Target Field trainer in 2018-19 seasons.

DAVID ORTIZ (1997-2002) is a special assistant to the general manager of the Red Sox. LUIS TIANT (1970) continues his association with the club as a goodwill ambassador.

 

Matt Tracy (1979) is the pitching development coordinator for the Blue Jays. RENE TOSONI (2011) and SAL BUTERA (1980-82, 87) are scouts for the Blue Jays.

 

MIKE PAGLIARULO (1991-92) is a special assistant to the general manager of the Nationals.

 

CHARLIE MANUEL (1969-72) is a special assistant to the general manager of the Phillies.

 

LEROY PURDY SMITH (1986-90) is a chief scout for the Mets.

Most affiliates are just finishing naming their field staffs. I imagine an influx of minor league free agents (as well as a few former Twins signing as 40-man free agents like Rosario, for one) will happen once the lockout ends. But probably holding off any look at Twins in the minor leagues until the roster are set at the end of Spring Training. Many given a looksee in the spring don't make the final cut.

 

LeCroy is the AAA Manager for the Nationals with the Rochester Red Wings, at least thru last season.

BYUNG-HO PARK is still slugging the ball for another season after breaking his 3-year contract he signed with the Twins back in 2016.

 

Glenn Sparkman, a former minor league free agent, is there.

 

CHARLIE BARNES, a lefty who pitched some in 2021, is looking to thrive over there. Being a lefty, and the Twins short on pitching, was surprised when they removed him from the 40-man in the off-season.

Getting a few more of these happening. Once the minor league season starts, will be able to review ALL the former Twins that are playing in other systems after spring training cuts. Then later in April, Indy Leagues (which recently saw the return of Oswaldo Arcia, remember him?).
