Twins sign Dylan Bundy

I like his age and upside. I like the year 2 option. This is the kind of move that smaller market teams need to make and win on. There were several successful pitchers that were signed to low cost contracts last year. The Twins haven’t been successful at finding any of them and that needs to change this year with Bundy. If the front office can’t identify those pitchers they need to find different people who can.

They need more. No doubt about that, BUT

Nobody wanted Robbie Ray last year. Look at his 2019 numbers when you get a moment, And he won the damn Cy Young. Nobody wanted Kevin Gausman after his 2018 abomination and he was a front runner for that. Both just got massive contracts.

Bundy has that talent. Former top 10 prospec who came from an Orioles organization that failed pitchers like Arrieta and Gausman. He showed massive potential last year and then fizzled this year. Look at the reclamation projects the Giants and Braves had last year that brought them to the best record and WS title respectively.

They each had numerous. No this can't be all they do, There have to be big signings as well, but if you can't see the potential here then I am sorry.

In all seriousness, this is the sort of signing I expect for this year. The Twins see pitching the same way they see the shortstop position - Their prospects are the long-term solution, and they only want to sign stopgaps in free agency now that the pipeline looks close. And reclamation projects are always eager to sign short contracts.

I don’t see Bundy as a stop gap. One year deals to Happ, Shoemaker and Hill are stop gap. Bundy is younger and they have an option. He comes with a low floor but does have upside.

Right. But he can be a stop gap to our pitching prospects if he implodes right away or down the line.

I really like the option with that low buy out.

I agree, except it is the Twins MO to take those long-term solutions and ship them out just when they become the long term solution. Therefore, with the Twins, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A LONG-TERM SOLUTION! See ya later Santana and Berrios..... we like the bottom of the barrel and the hope and dreams from the reclaimation pile. That is how we replace the pitchers and players that other teams get great value contracts on. We just trade them or let them go for nothing.

A #5 starter for $5 million can't hurt. The patience should be shorter than what we saw with Shoemaker.

This is fine. Now the Twins need three better starting pitchers.

Where are those coming from?

This is one of their starters now. They might add one more veteran.

Santana was hardly a long term solution when the Twins dealt him.  He pitched very well in 88 games in the next 3 seasons and then his career was basically over.  Yes, they handled it poorly, but the Mets ate almost $80M over the last 4 years of that extension where Santana pitched in a grand total of 21 games.

I WANT to stay patient, and not be negative, definitely has the potential to be a good signing, but I would have liked it mor eif he was the complimentary piece to something like a Stroman signing.

and I am not a "they said with a new stadium they would be able to keep and sign FA" kind of a guy, but clearly we have little intention of paying market rate for even a #2 or #3 starter,

Yes we paid Buxton, but in an incredibly protected way. Berrios proved he was not looking to break the bank in Free Agency by signing extension with Jays.

I find myself torn, I do like the signing, but incredibly underwhelmed if this is the main signign to address the rotation.

Even with extending Buxton, we are at a projected $71M after signing Bundy.  That is a good $55M from where we were last year.  and now the quality FA pitching is dried up.

SO now if we do something in trade we will pay $ AND give up prospects.

I meant - I have zero control and choose not to be angry or get down or see whatever Falvey is doing as the end of the day. There are plenty of trade opportunities left. The Twins needed to find four starting pitchers. One down .... three to go. That's my view. Bundy doesn't do much for me but he could be decent.

I think this sums up most Twins fans (myself inlcuded hehe)...

Twins sign Dylan Bundy to a low risk deal...   "Seriously??? THAT is how we fix our rotation???"  "Typical Twins SMH"

Twins fans see ANOTHER team sign Dylan Bundy... "Seriously??? we wont even go after a pitcher like Bundy???"  "Typical Twins SMH"

At this point, it seems that a trade is the only way they're going to get a #3 or better starter at this point. They have a track record for this (Odorizzi and Maeda trades), so you'd think they would be looking at the A's/Reds/Marlins options. Even then, a rotation of Manaea/Bundy/Ober/Ryan/another middling FA is going to easily be one of the worst in baseball. ?

Yeah, I don’t want a trade at this point. Rental arm on a rebuilding club, pass. Why would they give up young talent when there was so many affordable free agents?

I mean even if they signed the three most expensive free agent pitchers left, I doubt they’d be anywhere near their payroll limit.

This is not a bad gamble.  But the Twins still have a LOT of heavy lifting to do to shore up that rotation.  You don't sign Buxton long term without an expectation to compete for the division title next year.  Bundy will help...but the Twins now need to acquire 3 more starting pitchers via trade (unless they sign Carlos Rodon, but our ownership and FO is SO risk averse there's just no way that happens).  I don't think Danny Duffy would be a bad gamble for the right price and Pineda is still out there.  Signing Pineda and trading for two SP's (maybe a GOOD one like Montas or Castillo) would hearten Twins fans across the upper midwest.

Buy low starters rarely work out. People like pointing to Robbie Ray, but for every Ray, there are 10 Matt Shoemakers. We're now strongly into the position where it's clear they have no intention of spending the money they saved by shipping Berrios off.

I'll never understand the "small market" label fans keep attaching to this team. The Twins are a strongly mid-market team.

We can almost put our concerns to bed for now due to the CBA intermission. There will still be opportunities to trade and the Twins absolutely can afford to part with a few prospects and a few redundant players. Bassitt for prospects is worthy as he allows Winder and Balazovic a model. Bassitt might also look to sign on for additional years. Pitchers with two years left are also excellent for their low salary and performance. Falvey will need to work hard in the next two months or those who clamor for an all prospect plus scrubs starting pitching staff will get their wishes and the Twins will get a very high draft pick in 2023.
