Is this gonna hurt our ability to trade for a good SP from them?

We are toast, as far as trading with Miami. They need a CF and were into Buxton big time before Buck signed. The Pirates are confounding. They traded a top catcher for 2 potentially #4/5 pitchers and a young toolsy hitter from Plant High School in Tampa. A similar trade might have been Dobnak or Strotman, Matt Wallner, and Steve Hajjer. Stallings is really good and the Pirates struggle with so much. This about ends any talks with Miami because the Twins do not have anything else to offer for their pitchers. Oakland? Milwaukee?

I expect the Pittsburgh Pirates will have a new owner in the next 5 years. Nutting makes the Pohlads look positively frivolous in spending, and that's saying something. A salary floor of some type is coming and MLB will be looking to force guys like Nutting out.

To be fair, the Pohlads are pretty run of the mill owners. Frustrating for sure but pretty much in line with most of the sport, for good or bad.

Nutting is probably the worst owner in the game. I don’t understand why the Pirates have a single fan at this point.

I wouldn't say Miami is completely off the table as a trade option ... Trading Kepler would obviously be selling low, but they need bats and corner outfielders. If they would bite on a Edward Cabrera + Jack Eder deal i'd be in.

Why would Miami trade one of their top prospects, a 23 year old lefty handed pitcher in AA (1.77 ERA in 15 games, with 99 K's in 71.33 innings) and another 23 year old pitcher and top 2 prospect that was a top 81 prospects going into last year for Kepler?

That would be a better return than the Berrios trade.

If the I was Miami, I would be asking for Lewis, AK, and Balazovic for them, not a 29 year old Max Kepler.

This is disappointing.  As was the Seattle signing of Robbie Ray for 5 yrs and $115 million.  That's $23 million a year, something the Twins could easily have matched or exceeded for the reigning A.L. Cy Young Award Winner if they were truly "IN" on Ray.  As was allowing the extremely aggressive Texas Rangers to sign Jon Gray.  Look, Miami simply has to trade some of their incredible stash of young SP's.  It's their perfect opportunity to determine who they're willing to part with and what holes they want to plug.  We were a perfect match for them with Jeffers or Garver while also having Kepler or Larnach.  The table was set for a meal.  Our FO just forgot what time dinner was.  As tony&rodney pointed has pointed out, Oakland and the Brewers remain as trade partners as do the Reds with Castillo, Sonny Gray and Mahle.  But I expect some teams that haven't done much yet (Dodgers, Yankees) who have DEEP pockets to make some noise pretty soon.

If the Pirates had kept their starting pitchers that they have developed over the last 6 or so years they would be a world series contender year in and year out.  Not saying they wouldn't have a bad season mixed in but seriously 4 or 5 of those 6 seasons they would have been right in the hunt.  Then it would probably be fun to be a Pirate fan!  Now like you say, why even bother?

How frustrating! My congratulations to MIA, who saw a need, went out and traded for it, w/o giving up much. Maybe PIT is open for trading Reynolds with a similar trade. This FO needs to get going & get off their hind side.  Montas (OAK), Means (BAL) and maybe Gallen (ARI) could be had if they FO put the effort in. Reds are just trying to find the best offer they're not serious

Good thing your not Miami.

Eder is out with TJ next year. Cabrera looks to be pen piece long term.

Kepler w the extremely team friendly deal and under control for a while prob is appealing to a team that quite literally doesn’t spend money.

So you want the Twins to trade Kepler for a relief pitcher and a pitcher that is out next year and will be 24 before he pitches in the minors again?

If the Twins are looking to trade Kepler there may be options. I would rather find out what else Miami is interested in acquiring to attempt to bring in both Meyer and Cabrera. Either one seems unlikely, however.

Another post suggested some manner of a Kepler plus catcher to NYY for Severino plus shortstop. Oakland and other teams are still out there. There are options. Waiting has become the norm.

If the arm is touted as being as good as it has been? Yea sure i'd love a lockdown backend piece for the next 6 years. You seen the slider??  ..  your right, 24 years old is ancient. Never mind the missed development time with covid and TJ. Scratch him off the list.

I always forget the Twins are shoe in to compete this year and they filled the 3 rotation holes.

Miami just signed Avisail Garcia to a 4/53 deal.

I just don't see Miami taking Kepler for these two.

I mentioned he will be 24 when he pitches next because he pitched 58 innings in 2018, 54 innings in 2019, 20 innings in 2020, 71.1 in 2021, normally next year would be 100-110, but it will be 0 again. so it will be another 3 years until he gets to 100-110 innings in a season. This is they way teams are bringing along pitchers these days, watching their innings. People get mad when you point it out, but the data is there. So if he is to become a MLB starter it will be closer to when he is 27, if he is going to become a relief pitcher he could be in the majors by 2024.

I much rather have the two prospects and Garcia at 53 (4 years) million, than kepler for 25 (3 years) If I am Miami.

Tim - don't get me wrong as a Twins fans I would love to have them trade for those two prospects and I would give up Kepler to get them, I just don't think Kepler or at least him alone is going to get them, that has been the point I have been trying to make, very badly I admit.
