Ya, I would sign Pineda to a one year 8mil deal, no longer. If someone else outbids, so be it.

I can’t imagine Stroman signs for less than 4 years, probably 5. I’d sign him for 5 years, probably 90-100 mil, maybe more

I've been in favor of Pineda since day one and I'd be surprised if they haven't already been talking. And your post is part of my blueprint. Pineda is probably not going to be a stalwart but he's experienced, crafty and probably good for around 150 IP. I've said $8M for 1yr, but would consider a 1+1.

And I've been pushing for Storman since day one. They've been tied to him for a couple years now and just makes so much sense. As good as he is, and has been, he's probably just a small notch below Gausman and Ray. If they are $23M per SP, Stroman is about $20M. Especially when you look at what he's earned previously. I've been of the opinion they should give him $22M per for 4 or 5yrs and JUST GET IT DONE.

He may not be an ACE....NOT going to get in to this debate again...but he's a #1 for this team. He's a different but very similar pitcher to Berrios. He's a bulldog, consistent, eats innings, has been largely healthy and consistent his whole career. As I mentioned earlier, why not front load the contract for the first couple of years and even offer an opt out after 2 or 3yrs? You have to be aggressive, smart and flexible if your the Twins FO to make things happen!

Now that Buxton is in the fold it's time to make a SERIOUS and DELIBERATE move! Stoman SHOULD be that move. Just DO IT before the shut down happens. If Pineda is going to happen, you could wait, but could also just do it now and also get it done.

Suddenly you have TWO spots filled, and could look at FA and trades after things get settled after a new CBA to figure out the #2 spot and a bullpen arm, or two.

Am I wrong that this makes too much sense to not make it happen?

It makes a ton of sense, especially since the players will surely drag out the negotiations as long as possible.

Stroman makes the most sense to me too. I wouldn’t be too quick to sign Pineda. There will be a few Pinedas available later, but the strong front of rotation (1 or 2) types will all be locked up by tomorrow.

Agreed, make it happen

The Twins were not in for length and $20 million for their own pitcher, Berrios, so it would be odd for them to sign Stroman as he is similar, as many have pointed out, to Berrios. Berrios is better though, thus I would be surprised. Can the FO suddenly come to a realization of the current financial salaries?

Here's how I'd rank the top 5 pitchers in free agency the Twins should pursue in the next 12 hours before the lockout happens.

1. Stroman

2. Kershaw (very unlikely but still should try)

3. Kikuchi

4. Rondon

5. Greinke

I'll be satisfied if the Twins can get one of these five starters to add to the rotation, regardless of who they get or if they sign any starter in the next 12 hours. They should still continue to check in with the A's and Reds to try and get one of their available starters as well.

I'm just confused about this team's overall unwillingness to pay pitchers. And this is obviously assuming they don't get Stroman or Rodon.

Obviously many people see pitchers as more of a risk because of injury issues, but they gave Donaldson and Buxton 100m. They're as injury prone as anyone. Berrios was too much of a risk because he wanted to test the market, but he didn't and signed a reasonable deal. The FA market was as good this year as it's been for a while and guys like Ray and Gausman got reasonable contracts.

Even if the Twins trade for someone big that just continunes to prove they won't give big money to pitchers because they'll trade them away before they're due for an extension. This discussion includes expensive relievers as well.

I could understand this if they were like Cleveland, Oakland, Tampa and really really good at developing pitching talent, but they've always been among the worst teams at doing this. Of course they've brought in multiple staff from Tampa and Cleveland so these guys likely believe they can do this, but at some point they need to stop kidding themselves because it has yet to happen. Also, until this past draft, the new regime has not drafted pitching in the first or second rounds.  I'm just so confused what their plan has been for pitching. They don't draft it, they don't sign free agents and they won't extend players they might trade for. Relying on 8th rounders being diamonds in the rough and guys like Rich Hill or JA Happ will never win anything.

Ryan, Balazovic, Duran are nice, but they're no scouts think they're going to be aces. Could they become that? Maybe, but nobody has ever thought that.

Their actions just don't make any sense to me.

It's Rondon and Kikuchi or bust for me.

Stroman's pitch-to-contact approach doesn't have the upside to be an ace, but since he'd get paid like one, the Twins would almost certainly never try for another pitcher in that price range for the foreseeable future. There's a reason he's the last big name pitcher left. The top end guys who put the ball in play are always the guy the other teams don't chase.

Danny Duffy is targeting a June return after getting flexor tendon surgery. I know he was a somewhat popular target around here. I have nothing to support this take, but if he's targeting June, I'd expect August or maybe 2023. Doesn't seem to be a great fit since the Twins look to be bargain shopping until the prospects are ready.

Although, the Twins do have some precedence with this kind of signing. They picked up both Michael Pineda and Rich Hill who were on the mend and targeting a mid-year return.
