Berrios signs Extension with Blue Jays

What's worse is that $131M is what's being reported now, over 7 years.  I suppose that it's possible that he wouldn't have signed for that here, but that's still pretty frustrating one way or another.

Happy for Jose though.

Looks like 7 years 131M. I defended the FO not extending him as him possibly asking for way too much, but if this is what he was asking the Twins for I'm pretty upset. He was absolutely worth that for the Twins and they should've signed that deal. I like Martin a lot, and SWR looks good, but it's really frustrating that it took less than 20 a year to sign him.

Same. I'm shocked that this is what it took to get it done. Either he suddenly discovered that he really loved it in Toronto, or the Twins were really low-balling him, or there was something about MN he just didn't like but I was 100% convinced he wasn't signing an extension and was going to the free agent market.

I agree.  Martin and/or SWR really need to pan out.

Who wouldn’t love a warm weather region like Canada?

2 things.

$20mil a year 7 years from now won't look like $20mil a year does now.  Very good #2 pitcher.

How many pitchers sign 7 year contracts? Berrios is an exception for how how does his off-season training. Hope he avoids Tommy John Surgery.

I think that makes the trade look much worse.  IF, we could have signed him to this contract...I'd rather have JOSE!!!

I consider this a fireable offense. That's a completely reasonable contract for a very durable ace (and one of our very few homegrown pitching success stories). Twins should have matched or beat that offer easily, and Berrios is certainly worth more to a "retooling" team than the underwhelming prospects they received in trade. Shameful.

We were told by this FO that Berrios wanted to test his value in free agency, and that he wouldn't accept an extension. Now we know that wasn't true. We were also told by Jim Pohlad that the Twins "absolutely" could afford to keep Berrios AND Buxton long-term. So much deception and misdirection.

This team continues to embarrass and disappoint. I love Twins baseball, but it might be getting time to walk away. It's going to be too hard to see this happen with Buxton as well.

I will say, there may be a silver lining with this. While I have no idea if it was the front office, the Pohlads or some other (very unlikely) unnamed force which kept the Twins from doing this deal, the Pohlads now at the very least know the magnitude of the crapshow they'll be facing if they also let Buxton get away without an extension.

They stepped in and made the GM take care of business instead of the fan revolt of losing Kirby Puckett and Joe Mauer. Now is Buxton on the same level as those two? Probably not, but the riot they'll face may be.

I bet the Twins offer maxed out around 5 years.  They are not fans or giving pitchers too many years.  If Berrios gets injured in year 2 of the contract and wrecks his arm, and is never the same.....  That would be 100 million down the drain....

Same issue with signing Darvish and if you remember the Twins wouldn't top 5 years on a Johan Santana extension, hence his trade.

Also , did anyone noticed the Angels signed Noah Syndergaard to a 1 year 21 million deal?  Angels To Sign Noah Syndergaard - MLB Trade Rumors

eah, this one is going to require an explanation from the organization.

What are they going to say that would be of value? They won't give a candid response. They clearly didn't even tell the truth about Berrios' intention to hit free agency.

If Pohlad is unhappy about this, he should say so. He has to agree that this was a very reasonable contract extension and would have helped this team extend a window of contention. He should think seriously about making a change in the FO staff. Immediately.

Or, if Falvey/Levine wanted to sign Berrios to exactly this kind of extension and were rebuffed by ownership, they should say so publicly and let Pohlad take the heat. They should also think about leaving if they're working for a boss who tells the fans one thing about a commitment to winning and his admin staff something else.

Either way, what's happening at 1 Twins Way these days absolutely stinks.

Boy, I would LOVE to know what the escalators look like, and whether they are included in the $131M price tag. (If they are, then the Twins FO made an awful, awful call. If they're not, then this could look very different. If this is a situation where Berrios hits a couple of escalators in the first 2 years and now the total value jumps to $180M+ or something, I'm less outraged.)

We can blame the FO all we want on this signing, but it could have been very easy by the Twins that Berrios wouldn't sign with the Twins regardless of offer, so they traded him.  Not going down would / could / should have done this that or the other.  We roll into next year with a new squad makeup and have at it.

Wow - Syndergaard was a case where it really looked like the QO made sense on both sides. I guess this contract probably indicates that he was seriously considering taking the QO and the Angels wanted him enough to give him the same length and more money.

Agreed, we only know half the story and we'll likely never know all of it.

To this point, we still don't know what the entire deal he got entails either.  There could be details in the deal that the Twins wouldn't give him.  There's still a lot of things we simply don't know yet.  It certainly doesn't look good at first blush though.
