What Would You Pay Byron Buxton?

Come one, come all. 

I would love to hear what you all think Buxton is worth in a contract extension but there’s a catch - no long winded explanations or diving into his injury history. I just want the numbers - length, value, breakdown per year if it’s not even, and any incentives.

Not a fair question for old timers like me.  I would not pay any of the players what they get today.  Personally I think ball games should be free for fans since they have enough to pay players $30 million a year.

I would agree - the Twins broke the bank at the time to resign Puckett. $ure times have changed, and many digits have been added, but winners tend to  keep their best homegrown assets.

Not sure what I'd pay but I don't think he's staying for anything less than 5 years $125 million.

Buy out 2022 for $15 million, then $20 million per year for 2 years, then team option for 2025 at $30 million, plus large incentive payments for years in which he plays more than 100 games.  I don't know what incentives are allowed, but I would want a contract where he gets a lot more if he plays in enough games.

The Twins organization has gambled enough with their penny pinching...sign Buck, give him what he wants. or we are going to have another Big Papi outcome to haunt us forever.   How many players can play at his level??? 15 Million just for showing up at the field. Bonus incentives if he doesn't end up injured for more than 30 games

Buck WANTS to remain a Twin.  Frankly, I'm not sure why!  I could write a book, but won't.  Suffice it to say - if the Twins lose Buck, they lose me.  I'll watch the players I like wherever they play.  #EddieEddie

I think you're onto something Old Nurse, a very good standard to start with. 5M base seems low,

If I had the Twins money, assuming that is part of the question, I would look to sign him to a base contract of say 15mil a year, with game played bonuses kicking in at 100 games.  If he plays over 100 he gets 2 mil more, if he plays 110 he gets another 2 mil, all the way to 150 games played, meaning if he plays 150 games he get 25 mil a year.  I would offer it for 7 year deal, with his opt out after 3 so if he manages to put together 3 full years he feels he can opt out and cash in on newer richer deal.

Base of $14 million per year for 7 years. 125 games = $16 million, $135 games = $22 million, adding $2 million for gold glove, $3 million for All Star game starter, and $8 million for MVP. Something along these lines.

I really have no idea how the Twins value Byron right now and would offer Starling Marte 3/$20 with 4th year player option at $8 million for $68 million potentially to buttress the team against the loss of Buxton.

Additionally, it is difficult to judge what Byron Buxton would return in a trade this winter. He may be more valuable to other teams in June or July if he has not signed yet, the Twins are heading towards 90+ losses, and Buxton is playing well.

I think he's excited about staying because Baldelli has allowed him to play the game he wants to play and is someone that can understand (and coach) a player that has struggled with injuries.

Of all things this year, I was most impressed with how Baldelli handled a frustrated Buxton who was upset when he thought he was 'good to go' after the hip injury.

I like that idea, which Buxton himself seemed to be open to. 

The question is how much is 60 games worth in guaranteed money, considering we've said Josh Donaldson is worth $20-ish (don't recall the exact number offhand) million a year.  There are already many arguments about how even half a Buxton has proven the worth of a full Donaldson, and I'm largely in agreement.

A starting ace pitcher starts or is used in 30 plus games a season and is being paid 30 million plus for their services  ...

 

Buck played 61 games this past season  , twice as many games  as an ace starting pitcher that makes 30 million plus ...

 

It's a no brainer...

Find out how much the Dodgers, NYY, Boston, Angels or any other high spending team is offering and top that.  Not going to happen and not 100% sure Buxton really wants to stay.  Of course he needs to say that but I kept imaging him playing in the WS and how exciting that would be.  Eddie, Eddie, Eddie was the thrill of my season!

Trout makes $37M and before covid he averaged 9 WAR for 8 years.  Buxton's career total is 12 WAR.  I guess we will see soon enough what the mark bears.

I offer him a six year, $15m per year base with PA incentives that can take him to $30m per year at 550 PAs. On top of that, I offer $5m for MVP votes and $5m more for an MVP. He could peak at $40m in a single season.

The most likely way to see Buxton in a World Series, is, like Eddie, for another team, because the Twins can't ever win a single playoff game, much more a series, and it takes at least seven, maybe 8 postseason wins to even get to the Series these days......

If the reports are at all accurate, it sounds like the guarantee the offered him was in the neighborhood of 7/80 or 11.4M/year so something less has virtually no shot of being accepted.  Where they disagreed was on incentives and of course we have no idea what the Twins offered or Buxton demanded.

Very true. My idea is that if Buxton wants to focus on incentives and FO has some problem with the amount. Try a compromise if Buxton is willing to take a cut in the base salary, the FO should try harder to meet Buxton's incentives
