  1. 1. Who you think will get called up Sept. 1

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure what the strategy will be, but the major league roster bumps up to 28 players on September 1st. With the minor leagues still playing through September, it's likely going to be a lot of shuttling going on with those extra spots, but maybe not. In any case, it will begin with the 1st two. Who will it be? Wednesday's slot has 'tbd' pitching vs the Cubs. Could we finally see Ryan? I see that the Saints also have 'tbd' pitching (as of just now) for tomorrow and Wednesday ... so ... discussion must be going on involving a starting pitcher. We won't have to wait long to find out. But until then ... what is your guess of a call up on Wednesday?

Ryan starts Wednesday. If you look at the starting rotation, they just sent Charlie Barnes down to AAA. Gant will start tomorrow, and Jax pitched Sunday so he’s in line to start Friday in Tampa Bay. That means someone is coming up to start Wednesday. Ryan went 5 innings, 1 run, 81 pitches against Toledo last week, hasn’t pitched since. Not scheduled to start in St. Paul tomorrow. All the signs say Ryan starts Wednesday against the Cubs. Home game, mediocre opponent. Good place for him to get his first MLB start.

As for the other spot? I’m hoping Miranda, but Moran is the smarter move. We need to audition pitchers, not position players. Miranda will have to wait. Arreaz looks hurt again so maybe a 10 day IL for him gets Miranda up.

I picked 4, even though it could take a day or two for everyone else to be brought up. Close enough for me to pick 4.

Ryan is up.

Moran or Hamilton is up. Maybe both. Decent chance it's just one with the other up a couple days later.

Miranda up by the end of the week.

Who is not listed? Dobnak. He might get one more start, but then he too is up.

Gant needs to be in the pen. He just might be a viable, experienced BP option in 2022.

Ober, Ryan, Jax, Dobnak and Albers to finish the season in the rotation. Gant to the pen where he joins Hamilton and Moran.

Miranda gets his feet wet before the week is done. It's about 2022 and the Twins future, and not about a strong finish for St Paul.

Okay, St. Paul is playing games thru the end of the month. Instead of Playoffs, the AAA just extended the season, for more action and game revenue.

The other levels all end seasons by mid-September, so we will be able to shuffle some players around. Not alot (still have housing and how much experience is it for them to go to a strange town for two weeks).

People seem to forget we have Albers. The guy who was part of a shutout the other day. And the Twins still have Gant listed as a starter. We have two players, Randy Dobnak and Luke Farrell, coming off 60-day disabled lists, which means we have to designate two players off the current 40-man roster.

Of course, one could be moving Maeda to the 60-day after Wednesday's surgery. Another could be ending he season for either (or both) of Thorpe and Pineda.

I almost picture Derek Law being a non-factor and NOT returning to the Twins, as his 40-man spot may be more valuable...plus who goes.

Strotman is on the 40-man. So is Balazovic, who would need to spend a day at AAA before coming over. And if the Saints elevate anyone from Wichita, it should be Balazovic. I would like to see Balazovic pitch twice for the Saints and twice for the Twins before the end of the season.

Ryan and Moran (and Mirada) all would need 40-man roster spots. People have to be taken off the 40-man for them to come onboard.

My simple procedure would be to send Cave away, move Rooker back to St. Paul, and bring in Celestino. That would give us one spot. I would send Simmons off and bring up Miranda to play third or first with Sano and Donaldson getting more reps at DH. Give Simmons a chance. And, he's not coming back, at least for $10 million, in 2022.

Colome is the closer, it seems. Again, I hate to rag on the guy, but he gave us nothing earlier when he could've been a valuable trade chip. He is showing signs of closing ability on a team in which winning games in only a factor in keeping you from the Top Draft Pick. Some team would claim him, the Twins to recoup some salary. Isn't that a plus? Maybe pay for the Annual Holiday Party.

That would allow the team to add Moran as a bullpen arm, and keep their current stable of relief pitchers.

Law, Garcia, whomever being move off the 40-man would allow Ryan to be added. Plus, yes, the Twins get two freebie adds, here. And they both have to be starting pitchers when you only have three legit starters currently on the mound.

Of course, if you don't want to kill St. Paul, you can also shuffle Jax back into their picture to work on his velocity and stuff, and let him get some winnable highs before the off-season.

Two players can be added with no send-downs after September 1.

Two players coming off the 60-day disabled list soon, and one the regular disabled list...not to mention Garver perhaps.

You have to get rid of two 40-man spots for the returning players. If you want the rookies to play, you need to find three more open 40-man roster spots.

We've already been told that Dobnak will be activated from the IL and starting on Friday, so he won't be up by Sept. 1.

I'm guessing Ryan will be starting on Wednesday. As for the other? Moran or Hamilton.

But I think we'll see others make appearances throughout September.

Since the Twins have booted Daniel Descalo and Keon Broxton, I guess that leaves Drew Maggi and Sherman Johnson. Johnson is a little young for the callup at only season age 30, but he recently technically had his 31st birthday and he's not playing very well which improves his odds greatly. Drew Maggi is playing a little too well, like almost servicable, but thankfully he's in his age 32 season so the Twins can call him up without worry about him having too much potential.

Since September counts towards service time and the Twins are looking like a team which is likely going to be doing a full rebuild, I don't think the front office is going to call up any starters or any high impact players.

Is there a limit on pitchers that can be on the 28 man roster? If one of the call ups has to be a position player, I think Celestino earned the call up. The last few roster moves they’ve made has been very risk averse planning for next year, so I’m guessing it will be someone already on the 40 man like Strotman.

I hope I’m wrong, but I can’t help but be jaded by their confusing moves since the trade deadline.

Strotman just pitched, though ... on Sunday, I think ... but with Ryan now slated to pitch Wednesday for the Saints ... that could go either way ... they've either already decided he's not coming up, or, they shuffled him around to get him in line to pitch with the Twins Wednesday. I'd say it's a 50-50 shot now.

As to your other question, not sure what the rules are. That would be an @Otto von Ballpark question ... do you know?

And even though I put Celestino on that poll, I had forgotten ... he might be the one, but then, Bux is back and Gordon still up, so not sure if Celestino has a place? He was called up earlier than I think he would have been, basically jumping from AA, given all the injuries this year, so I think they may just leave him in AAA for the rest of the year to play. Unless they move Refsnyder down? Honestly, I just don't know!

No limit on pitchers right now.

When active rosters were expanded to 26 before the 2020 season, there was also going to be a 13 pitcher maximum. And 28-man September rosters would have had a 14 pitcher maximum.

However, those pitcher maximums have been suspended for the 2020 and 2021 seasons, ostensibly due to COVID so perhaps they'll try to re-implement them in 2022.

I didn't know they suspended those changes. Thought it was still going to 15 pitchers max going into September.

The Twins removed Garcia from their 40-man, so that spot is for Ryan (or Dobnak). Either way, another roster spot will need to open.

Is Albers getting another start? I would rather see Gant in relief of him, or Dobnak, if push came to...shove.

From MLB's transactions glossary:

Clubs are not limited to how many pitchers they may carry on the 26-man roster, and clubs typically will roster 12 to 13 pitchers vs. 13 to 14 position players (for a total of 26 active players), though the breakdown varies from team to team throughout a season.

....

Prior to the 2020 season, a rule was enacted to limit the number of pitchers a club can carry to 13, but the rule was not put into effect last year and continues to be on hold for 2021.

The aforementioned two-player rule, whereby all players qualify as a hitter, a pitcher, or a two-way player, was placed on hold for 2021. As a result, there are no rules limiting when a position player may pitch in 2021.

I mentioned elsewhere that Maeda to the 60-day IL makes sense as a corresponding 40-man move for Dobnak on Friday. And they could potentially leave the 28th expanded active roster spot open for Dobnak to claim Friday too -- they have an off day Thursday.

I too am rather surprised that Albers is getting bumped. Ryan could have started today in place of Gant with +1 day of rest, with Albers going on normal rest tomorrow. Would have required squeezing Ryan onto the 26-man roster for a day, but Gibaut is still here, so it's not like a huge challenge!

So it ended up being Ryan and Dobnak? Am I mistaken that we’re at 28 players now?

yeah, so it would seem ... I hope that there will be some shuttling going on. Different than past years when the minors were done at the end of August ... so hopefully there will be a few up and downs ... but I hope more than just pitchers get a turn

Doesn't Dobnak replace Maeda? Or did someone else replace him?

That’s what I’m mixed up about. I thought Dobnak was pre-determined before yesterday to take Maeda’s spot. And just Ryan has been called up since.

Maeda went on teh 10 day IL on 8-23. Sano was activated from the paternity list that day. So Dobnak and Ryan were the 2 adds on 9-1.
