Cleveland to change its name to Guardians

The owner/ownership group is free to do whatever they want with the name... it's their team.  If they changed it because they truly wanted to change it, then so be it.  However, this is a move that screams it is being made strictly due to public pressure and for that I do not like it.

Should have gone with Cleveland Cancel Cultures ?

My first choice was Spiders but also would have accepted River Fires.

Guardians is really meh, especially in the wake of the NHL adding a team called "The Kraken".

I thought that too, but after reading that it has significance to the city I like it a bit better.

Though I'm quite certain those guardians on that bridge are actually there trying to warn people to stay AWAY from Cleveland. :)

I can confirm that they've been very effective at deterring my entry to the city.  :)

Crossover potential with '... of the Galaxy.'  Groot can be the mascot.

First thing I thought of too.  Team motto:

except for José Ramirez, who would get his own:

In this day and age it's extremely difficult to find a mascot name that is not in use elsewhere in professional or major college sports. Selecting a name in use elsewhere would involve lots of copyright infringement issues and so forth, which is why a completely new name is desirable for team ownership and management. This is how names such as MIghty Mussels and Wind Surge and the like come about. Given that constraint, Guardians is probably about the best--or least bad--that could be hoped for.

The Cleveland baseball club of the Major League is changing its name from the Indians to the Guardians.
One may speculate why, what it intends to represent, but done is done so why quibble? Personally I'll just scratch it off as an exceptionally  lousy name for a ball club. Guardians of what?
Their great baseball heritage? Tris Speaker? Bob  Feller? The lake?
Better had they gone back to the original, the Spiders.
I could get behind a team called the Spiders. Think of the logos on the caps.

Was do a bit of light research into the origin of the Indians name for Cleveland.   They previously were Spiders, Blues, Broncos and then went to Naps - named after player-manager Nap Lajoie - and finally settled on Indians - possibly named after an Amerindian Louis Sockalexis that played for the Spiders and might have been the first Native American to play Major League Baseball but I can not confirm (both that they named the team after him and that he was the first American Indian).  He only played for the Spiders for 3 years and hit ok but he was certainly not a long-time star and had less than 400 plate appearances so not sure they would have named the team after him.    Since Cleveland apparently like naming their teams after players though they could have also followed tradition and gone with the Cleveland Fellers or maybe the Cleveland Thomes.  How could they pass up and opportunity to go with "Come out and watch the Fellers tonight".    I guess they could easily pass that up because it is not the 1940's and no one uses the term fella's anymore.   Guardians fits the theme from their bridge nicely though so that does tie to something unique to the city.    They last won a World Series in 1948 so I hope the name Guardians brings them no better success.

Cleveland was the perfect team to pay homage to the Negro Leagues by naming its team after a negro league team.  The Cleveland Indians brought Larry Doby     to the American League, the first black player in the AL.  The first black player to start playing for an existing MLB team in the city where it still plays (Jackie Robinson started in Brooklyn).
The great Cleveland Negro League Team was The Cleveland Buckeyes.   Maybe Ohio State would get upset, but screw it - that would have been a better name.  Larry Doby played for the Newark Eagles.  So how about the Cleveland Eagles?   Why not honor a famous Negro League team - The Cleveland Monarchs, The Cleveland Grays????   Many of those great teams barnstormed around the nation and were not beholden entirely to their city.  Instead of stomping on over a century of baseball history, Cleveland could have renewed some of it.   At least, the Guardians ends in the letter “S”.  All teams should end in “S” or “X”.
