In reading the Fangraphs coverage, they make it clear teams are all over the board in their rankings. VERY different than football for sure.

Sean Johnson kind of alluded to that last night, saying there may be even more variability in rankings from team-to-team this year because of the lost time last year.

They wouldn't have drafted him if they didn't have an agreement with him.

The A's appeared to have an agreement with Kyler Murray.

Maybe they do have something worked out, but Pittsburgh had about a four year window where they looked like they knew what they were doing and could build a sustainable small market team, like the Rays and A's.

However, they've looked utterly lost and confused for most of the last half decade since that time and make mind boggling poor decisions. So I don't have a ton of faith they have a good handle on this situation.

I would bet even money that you are correct, but I had forgotten that he was also committed to play football for Clemson.  Not that Bucs couldn't pry him away, but my (exceptionally) uneducated feeling is that they would have to go a good bit over slot value to do so. ?‍♂️:)

It has been fascinating to me how quickly Pittsburgh elevated to "pitching gurus" and plunged to "hot mess" over the course of 3-4 years, tops.

Twins appeared to have an agreement with Kyle Cody.

I thought the only universal truth in baseball was never draft a Big 10 pitcher.

Ok, it was half a joke last time, (less than half) but two Big Ten pitchers?

Seriously, I've been looking back, who is the last decent Big Ten pitcher to get drafted and stick as a starter? I'm back to 2006 in my search and haven't found anyone yet.

I thought that too....but he's not a very highly ranked QB (no idea why he'd go to Clemson to sit for 2 years).....so, maybe?

Hajjar at 61 seems to be fitting back into this regime's MO.  Good pitching frame, one good secondary already, the coaching staff probably think they could add some velocity and will need to refine a third pitch.

I would guess every front office and scouting group ever likes these types of picks. There are so few elite prospects. I think getting these two fairly polished college lefties is a good thing. They took their high-upside risk with Petty and Miller... at this point, they have now taken two guys who have pretty high floors with health.

Well with Lawrence no longer there, maybe his chances were greater at playing time.  Hard to say though, but the kid is a heck of an athlete.

Oh, I'm sure he'll get $2.5 million or more. The Twins selected Enlow with that same pick (1st pick, third round) in 2017 and got him to not go to LSU for $2 million. They were able to do it because Lewis took quite a bit underslot at 1-1. My guess is Davis agreed to a low deal so that they could take Bubba Chandler.

OK, I'm calling it a wrap on my research. Rich Hill in 2002 and JA Happ in 2004 are the only Big Ten pitchers drafted this century who stayed as a starter and amassed more than 2 WAR.

Expand

If that's true, we should be excited to see whats-his-face join the Twins sometime around the 2037-38 seasons.

You know the old saying -- the only thing better than drafting a pitcher from the Big 10 is drafting TWO pitchers from the Big 10, especially with back-to-back picks! Or something like that.....

Well, I am old enough to remember a pretty remarkable lefty drafted out of Michigan:  Jim Abbott.

Late 80's?

Ok, thanks with that one.  Way to go and remember the super feel good story about not only a Michigan pitcher succeeding, but making good on the biggest stage.

Thanks, now I feel like a total jerk... ?

Perkins was BIG 10, and that turned out good.
