Game Recap: Cleveland 5, Twins 3

Recommended Posts

For my own mental health, I’m going to dial back my attention to this club. Nothing is going right and every decision seems to be the wrong one.

When they come out if this, I more than check box scores.

I had to do the same thing--------focusing on my mental health----after last TH's meltdown in Oakland. Didn't watch 1 pitch of 3-game series against PItt----didn't miss much as our mighty pop gun f*rt of an offense only put up 6 runs over 3 games. I refuse to INVEST any of my time in this team at this point. I do have to say my spouse of 28 years is a lot happier not having to endure my daily expletive filled tirades. Physically and emotionally I've felt much better the last 5 days and have found other activities to occupy my time that keep my sanity and blood pressure at close to good levels. Saying that, I do plan on INVESTING multiple hours into watching the NFL draft this weekend-----------hoping Spielman does the SMART thing by investing in our OL or DL with #14 pick in 1st round.

I think fans just have to come to the realization that the Twins will be sellers at the deadline. Time to build around an OF of Larnach, Buxton, and Wallner(?). IF of Arraez, Kirilloff, Lewis (in a couple years), and some possible prospects in deadline deals. With Berrios, Balazovic, Duran, Canterino, maybe Maeda in the rotation, and some other pitching prospects to round out the BP.

Personally I would be more satisfied seeing up and coming prospects get some big league reps than watch the likes of Kepler, Sano, Polanco, Garver, etc. struggle in what was suppose to be a banner year.

.... and now officially adding.....new manager please... to my mantra.....

I've given much more nuanced critiques of Rocco, but now it is uncomfortable to even be critical of him because he is so....

lost, confused, dejected, and over his head that its just.....sad....

Today's managerial performance... just wow... I mean, just...wow

The extra inning games tell the tale. 5 losses...and no pitcher has been able to keep the opponent from scoring right away. Meanwhile (save Buxton's HR) Twins hitters can't figure out how to get a runner in from 2nd with no outs! The extra inning rule is a gimmick, but it applies to both teams...and Twins haven't caught on yet how it works.

Buxton is our best player...maybe one of the top 5 players in MLB, but my goodness, its now every week we hold our breaths to see if he can manage to not get injured. That will never do.

As for Colome ....didn't we learn our lesson with Romo last year? Bad is bad. For me, the good news today was the O's win over the Yanks. The umps helped out greatly (unusual for calls to go against the Yankees!); some poor baserunning by NY; and they were beaten by team with more hitters under .200 than one could possibly believe...well maybe Twins can relate....

Time to think about postponing the development of Ober or Duran as a starter and add one of them to the bullpen? Really no other option other than sticking with Colume or bumping everyone up, which exposes guys we don’t want to be pitching in leverage. What a mess.

But none of it matters if they don’t start hitting. You can’t expect to win games scoring 0-3 runs every single game. Even with a solid bullpen, you’re talking about...realistically...4-10 (instead of 2-12) in the last 14 games. Results would still be catastrophic. There is zero basis to expect that the Twins will score a run in any late inning, when they consistently fail to score in the 10th.

"Expose" whoever you have to. Continuing to run Colome out there is a joke, It's a one year deal. Cut your losses and move on. Alacala. Duran. Even Stashak.

Falvey has constructed a big fat mess. Locked up long term deals with the wrong guys. Hasn't locked up long term deals with the right guys. Obviously Rocco's former in-game management skills were due to the tremendous staff he doesn't have anymore. He looks lost between the white lines. I miss Rosario, mostly for his moxy and heart. I miss May, letting him get away looks like a mistake, ya think? But..we got Sano, Kep, Dobs and Polanco signed to team friendly deals..Yay?

My sentiment is with SoDakTwinsFan4 - but hope is not a strategy. All of a sudden, I do not like our 40 man roster - I do not like our manager - and I do not like our chances short of some significant change. I am a fan and do not know the best route for change. I worry the cool as a cucumber trio of Falvey/Levine/Baldelli will let this season get away from us. But we'll remain cool and level-headed about it.

I haven't read all the posts yet. If I'm repeating some points, I think it's worth repeating. I think the mindset is all off. They think they can fix a problem by throwing a potential bat at it. When their original bat doesn't work they throw a different bat at it. Our biggest problem isn't hitting although it hasn't come through overall. It's the defense, the defense stinks.

Their thinking that you can interchange Buxton with Cave without much deviation, that Cave can compensate for inadequacies in LF and RF, when he can't adequately cover CF, just drives me crazy! It's like they never look at the defense aspect at all, let alone prioritize it.

I get it that Buxton needs a break and Cave is the best option on the active roster. But that's the problem, we are so lacking depth at CF and SS. Our best option isn't even on the 40 man. We were fortunate to have picked up Broxton especially since he seems to have found himself at the plate during ST. But I wonder if they even consider him because he doesn't fit their mold. You can't keep punching in the same #s and expect a different result. I was all for using Lin at SS (his preferred position) when Simmons was down but not LF.

I'd also would've left Berrios in a little longer and now that Simmons is back I'd put Dobnak in where he could succeed in a position to eating up a lot of innings and a chance to win the game. Hopefully place Rogers to close out the game. I haven't given up on Colume but IMO needs to be given a break from closing. Baldelli said that he'd have no closer and bring up the best from camp, IMO he hasn't made good to his promises. Until they changed their mindset, I've conceded that they'll keep on losing.

I don’t think Wes should be let off the hook for these constant bullpen implosions. Duffey looks so bent and out of shape. Rogers, although having good numbers, is serving meatballs right down the middle and giving up hits. Alcala can’t stop giving up HRs. Robles can’t get hitters out in a timely manner. Colome is all of that rolled up into one terrible package. Pretty much everyone has regressed mightily. Not one of our relievers has shown he can be reliable (except maybe Rogers), a lot of them have been previously.

It looked to me like Rocco meant to leave Berrios in. If so, that was glaringly incompetent. With regard to Arraez, it looked like he was having difficulty with his contact lenses or somehow got poked in the eye. The camera showed him trying to get his vision straightened out a couple of times.

More than one poster has kept defending the pen with the probability of the runner on second scoring being 1.058 or something like that. So what. Then why can't we score? (I guess we did one out of 5 because of Buxton's homer, which Colome found a way to let 3 runs in instead of just one).

2-12. Just keep doing the same thing, Baldelli, and expect different results.

Both teams play by same rules with runner on second.  Other than the Buxton HR we have failed several times getting even 1 run in.  A couple times we had runner on 3rd less than 2 outs and failed to do it.  It is not just our pen in extras it is our lack of putting ball in play with a runner on third.  I mean Simmons last night nearly threw his bat at the ball in the other batter box, what was that?

The Tigers and Twins trail the field, but not by much. Every other team has at least eight losses or has won at least eight games. 93 wins always seemed like a big number for the Twins this year and 86 wins might gain a playoff spot. Teams are much more competitive in general than in 2019. Detroit could turn around  and be a 75-80 win team. By July the Twins will have a good idea of their weaknesses and how, or if, they can adjust their personnel. Unless a team implodes with a losing streak of 15 games or runs off a 35-5 start like the Tigers did one year, we can find comfort in the notion that teams do start slowly some years. Yes, the Twins are struggling now but their 40 man roster does not seem likely to finish below .500 for the year.
