More Proof that the Twins Just Don't Care or Aren't Trying Very Hard

Terry Ryan doesn't care about black people.

Are you serious? If so, you should be barred from this site. Throwing crap out there like this is just plain stupid and classless.

I've enjoyed this site at the beginning but the level of discourse recently is just disappointing. Time to move on.

No. You read my scenario wrong, Doumit was always a part of my original hypothesis. Eventually, to reiterate, the Twins will have to return to a 2-catcher configuration. If Doumit becomes attractive to another team this year in ST or before the deadline, they need someone that hits better than Butera to be the #2. The number 3 becomes (already is?) superfluous. (Hopefully, #2 eventually becomes Hermann, but there is little evidence that he would be ready for that pure #2 role before 2014). Your quote on Martinez ML OPS is classic SSS. Besides that, go and read my original post, it was more intent on Twins inertia than the player in question himself. My statement clearly says signing "someone like Martinez", who at least has demonstrated that he at least "might" hit better than Butera's career .497 OPS. That the Twins are satisfied with this crazy 3-catcher scenario and unnecessary love affair with Butera and his raise to $700K, with an already incredibly weak bench, is another sign that the Twins need to try harder and expect more

Again, backtrack from what you say " pointed out that having a catcher that might potentially provide more than Butera's lifetime OPS of .497, just might make the Twins more amenable to moving Doumit if a favorable trade opportunity came along."

SSS or not, that is what Martinez has done. No power is what he has shown even in the minors. Ben Revere power, without the OBP nor the SB.Yet you think maybe lightning in a bottle might happen and make Doumit expendable.

Pay enough attention and you would have figured out the sarcasm. Not everyone is 100% serious.

Where is it so clear that it is sarcasm? Maybe we should be be a little more clever when we are trying to be clever? That kind of comment specific to an individual is not one to take chances with. Reminds me of how childlike so any of these posts have devolved to.

Everyone, tone it down or this thread gets locked and we start handing out temporary bans.

I think you should have handed out the temp bans already. I didn't really get involved, but reading over this is straight garbage and poor discussion. You're too lax on posters at times and I almost feel the extra layer of tolerance creates added negativity where people try to push the limits. Just personal opinion, but stricter enforcement may help.

Oh yeah, 110% serious, serious as a heart attack, super serial. He's a raging racist, just like the Twins front office.

(did I lay it on thick enough?)

You are a super duper alley-ooper bigot.

Agreed, how is he supposed to know? There are some posters (this thread not short of them) that are serious about statements like this. Hard to tell at times the intent of the OP because all internet text reads the same.

I got the reference, I'm pretty sure. Spoiler alert, it's this :

George Bush Doesn't Care About Black People - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's not a comedy styling choice I would personally have made, precisely for the reason that someone who doesn't get it will *really* not get it, but then I've been burned by less before.

I tend to agree with Roger here. I was trying to find a nicer way to point out the flaws in your post. I doubt if Butera could be passed thru waivers without losing him. More to the point, why would the Twins do that when they clearly value his skills? Rather than spending time bashing the Twins for valuing a guy like Butera, maybe you could consider why the Twins and most other teams, really consider it so important to have a defensively skilled catcher as their backup.

So you believe many clubs would be interested in a 28 year old career.183 hitter? even after spiking his last years average up to a crisp .198.... me thinks aint nobody gonna claim him

Just ask Johnny Dakota about how some people can say whatever and some can't. This is as much a comment in regards to the title of the thread as is Dave's response.

As public figures they are open to critisim and mud slinging, but a personal attack on fellow members to me is much more serious

1.) They paid Butera. Nobody else will take on that money for him. He's a Twin for the season.

2.) Herrmann could fill in as a backup catcher in a pinch. More minors ABs would be optimal, but worse comes to worse, he'd be serviceable in limited, third-catcher ABs.

3.) Are you saying that they should try and trade Doumit NOW? If it happens, it'll be possibly near the trade deadline, and guess who has had another "half a year" in the minors by that point?

We're aware that Butera sucks, but the Twins have committed to him, and screaming that they should bring in a marginal-at-best upgrade just for the sake of bring in a marginal-at-best upgrade is pointless.

To me what i gleened from Jokins article , is that the twins could improve or acquire better players through the wavier wire,we finished last in our leaque why not upgrade where we can , untill after pitchers and catchers reported , we did nothing to add personal to challenge for the 3rd lefty reliever we all know we need, then look at centerfield, if Hicks and Benson are just not ready are you going to be happy with Clete Thomas as a 4th outfielder? why not claim Tony Campanas , a left handed hitter whos 26 y.o. in 357 plate aperences he has .262 avg and 54 stolen bases, he could platoon with r.h. Mastroanni .....why not improve where you can rather then staying with the statis quo?

I would hope that we all would think that Doumit would become immediately expendable if an attractive enough offer comes around. Shhh!, Remember? We're in stealth rebuild mode....

Butera lifetime AAA SLG of .308/ .220 BA, Martinez AAA SLG in 2011 & 12: .409./ .295 BA.

No one on this team should be feeling comfortable after the last 2 seasons, particularly Butera, who should have been more properly challenged for the spot on the team (as they presumably did with JR Towles in 2012) and it cost them virtually nothing to find out, the 2 AAA signees, the alleged "competition" that the Twins brought in, instead of someone more legit, would be lucky to catch their own urine specimen in a bottle, let alone lightning.

I'm all for shaking things up. Clete and Erik were a disaster last year, they finally found an acceptable 4th OF in Mastro when diving in the dumpster. They found a decent RP in the offseason off the reclamation pile, toxic to virtually every other organization. Why not continue on that path with nothing to lose and something, at least incrementally, to gain?

Why? Because "In Terry We Trust". It's still a family organization with an emphasis on legacy and seniority promotions, with no sense of urgency to change from their "small market" management style, despite their promises to the community to the contrary. It appears that with the mid-season acquisitions last year for Flori and Esco, they felt like they'd done their work with the position players and turned their full attention to acquiring a "pretty darned good starting pitcher" and begin half-measures in the rebuild mode. Having players at the talent level of Butera still around sends the wrong message, as much as retaining Andy, Ullger and Vavra.

Want more evidence? Besides picking up Martinez, despite carrying All-Star Weiters, I didn't get beaten up as much on Todd Redmond, but this one fits also. The Orioles have 3 potential #1 starters coming up through the pipeline on the fast track, as their #1, 2 and 3 prospects are Bundy, Gausman and Rodriguez . Their current SP is still very good in comparison to the Twins (They finished with a 4.42 SP ERA compared to the Twins 5.40 SP ERA in 2012). They also have Randy Wolf coming back in 2014. This didn't stop them from picking up Redmond, who apparently never even got a courtesy phone call from the Twins, despite the obvious Twins need and Redmond hoping for the opportunity.

I agree that this thread is plain stupid and classless, which was the point of the joke. I didn't think there was a person in the world not familiar with Kanye's George Bush quote. Pretty common pop culture reference. Sorry.

I'm shutting off this thread. I'm temporarily banning jokin and Dave for some of the first few comments. I'll be honest - I'll close the forums before I advocate this kind of discourse. And I'll hand out bans to a dozen members who put personal vendettas over civil discussion several steps before I close down the forums.

Play nice. If you can't, there will be bans. That is all.
