I wasn't advocating he was right, simply restating his stance.  That said, he's hit a few times in the late rounds:

Diggs, Weatherly, Stephen, John Sullivan.  But not nearly enough to justify his obsession with it.

Sorry, not trying to nit-pick since we are on the same page, but Sullivan was drafted before Spielman took over. He can have Brandon Fusco as a win though.

Also, 4th and 5th rounders seem to have a reasonable chance at providing decent talent, like Diggs. If Spielman can trade back a few spots, still get the guy he wants, and pick up some 4-5th round picks, I'm cool with that. It just always seems to fall off steeply after the fifth.

Ricky’s exploring every avenue... Including the trade up for Sewell.

I've heard that one before. The presumption is that it's Sewell because we need a LT right? Not because anyone has leaked anything?

Either way, hard to see Spielman giving up that much to get him. I'll hold onto it as a possibility for now though!

I think Fusco and Sullivan were both when he was the VP of personnel and not GM?  I think 2012 was his first official draft, which is why I was confused which role you meant.

Personally I lump 3-4 together and 5-7 together, but I see what you mean.  We mostly agree.

So Carolina trades for Darnold, Denver trades for Bridgewater. Both could (and probably should) look for a better prospect QB, but it's starting to look possible one falls.

Though I maybe shouldn't be, I probably would end up disappointed if one of the (non-Mac Jones) QBs is on the board and the Vikings go in another direction.

I've been wondering for a while know, why does everyone think Zach Wilson is the Jets pick? Is it because everybody thinks he's the near consensus #2 QB? Or were there leaks? Because I can't find any leaks reported anywhere, just speculation, and that assumption seems to grow more concrete mostly because everyone else keeps jumping on the theory.

I assume there were leaks or at least whispers, but I sure don't remember any specifically.

It was inferred once the 49ers moved up to #3, and the Darnold trade confirmed it. From what I heard, all Jets-related media members confirmed they were in love with Wilson and they haven't been hiding it since Lawrence is already locked in at #1. The Eagles reportedly wanted to move up for Wilson at #3, but once they learned the Jets were set on him, they traded down to #12.

Though I suppose we don't have a concrete report, I see no reason to doubt it.

A lot of the draft experts and insiders have been writing Wilson in ink for the Jets and the Jets themselves haven’t denied it. It would be pretty interesting if it was all a smoke screen and they choose Justin Fields or Trey Lance.

For those who may be interested, I've been working on my annual draft board that houses 230 players at the moment. You can view it from this Google Sheet. Once the draft starts, I will be making predictions on the picks as they are made in the "Predict By Pick" tab, so feel free to stop by and have a look tomorrow.

Here's a preview of the 1st round prospects I have on my board:

Do note that it's more of an aggregated ranking of the players, based on my favorite sources.

My official predictions for tomorrow... Go place your bets in Vegas on one or two! And bet the complete opposite on the others.

- 4 QBs go in the top 10. Lawrence, Wilson, Lance, and Fields.

- Sewell and Slater will be top 10 picks. And they will be drafted by teams trading up for them.

- One of the 5 QBs will be available at 14. I guess by elimination it’s Mac Jones in my scenario. If he’s not taken by SF...

- We will read reports that the Vikes tried very hard to trade up for one of Sewell or Slater. Will Rick have the cajones to do it?

- OT will be the highest quantity position drafted in the 1st round

- The Vikings will... trade down with someone who wants Mac Jones. And I’d be okay with that. Hopefully not too far down like Pittsburgh at 24, or New Orleans at 28. At that point I would be afraid of an OL run happening before we’re on the clock. Ideally... Las Vegas at 17, Washington at 19. Not sure I want to help out a division rival Chicago at 20.

I am bewildered on all the smoke of a QB going to Philly.  Did these rumor spreaders not see Jalen Hurts play last year?

No WR, no OL....dude still put up 300+ combo yards and 9 TDs in four starts.  Why would they need a QB?

Yeah... but I don't think it was smoke. I had checked out the Eagles' SB Nation site about two months ago, and there was a legitimate debate about whether they should go QB at #6, and they were pretty much split 50-50 on whether they should or not.

There are some crazy things going on in Philly - if you have an Athletic subscription, there's a great article on how GM Howie Roseman survived the 2020 season and it covers how owner Jeffery Lurie has been meddling with Roseman's drafts and causing chaos and rifts in the organization. If Lurie liked a QB at #6, he'd have Roseman do it, even with Hurts on the team. I guess then the logical move would be to trade Hurts since he's on a great contract? But it'd be a really bizarre move to make.

Here's another report I just saw:

  Quote

In the realm of stating the obvious, team sources with the Jets say that the organization has decided on BYU quarterback Zach Wilson. Ultimately, Jets general manager Joe Douglas wanted to reset the contract by going with Wilson and moving on from Sam Darnold. Douglas also wanted a clear-cut quarterback in place as the leader of the franchise for the team to build around with their new coaching staff.

Yeah, that's the kind of report I was looking for. I'm sure I just wasn't following the right sites, it just seemed like Wilson being the surefire pick was based on analyst prerogative.

Also, I'd rather be Fields and Lance right now. New York is a tough market for QBs, and well, the Jets have a history of being a poor team and a poorly run organization.

So there are reports that the 49er's tried to package the #3 pick plus a bunch more for Aaron Rodgers? That would be something else. Other reports say it didn't happen.

But hypothetically, if the Packers got pick #3, they don't go QB do they?

I'd call them right now and offer next year's first for Hurts.

Not sure why GB would punt on a possible playoff run.....but if they did get 3, they'd have to go QB, right?

The rumors are spreading like wildfire. I read a rumor that SF was going to trade Jimmy G to the Patriots.

They spent a 1st rounder on a QB last year so I would think they'd do something else. Maybe that stud TE or the 'Bama WR so the new QB would have some toys. Which would piss of Rodgers a lot.

Ya, I'd deal that guy and take a better QB at 3......but that's just me.

Yeah, I was never a big fan of Love. But of course there is the voice in the back of my head saying, "Well if Green Bay likes him, he must be good."

All I ask for, is for the Packers to make the wrong decision, whatever that may be.

Yeah, I just saw that... if the report is true, why the heck did the Niners wait until the day before the draft to propose a trade?! Haven't they decided who they're taking?

There are some bizarre things going on with the 49ers this offseason... including the "will they, won't they" with Jimmy Garoppolo.

I don't remember all the quotes and stuff but I thought the Packers FO and head coach loved Love and were thrilled to get him. After a year in the system, I suspect if they moved off of Rodgers it would be because they thought Love was close to ready, as opposed to bringing in a rookie. But, who knows. I hate the Packers. Hope they draft horribly.

Just spit-balling, but maybe their plan was to try to bring Rodgers home all along and they knew getting the #3 pick was the key, knowing that even if they did fail to get Rodgers, at worst they'd be stuck with an uber talented young QB.

Perhaps there have been overtures to get Rodgers before, but it's now or never, so now they are leaking their interest to make GB crap or get off the pot.

If somehow this did come to fruition, we'd probably look back at Rodgers' off season comments and game-show desires and think, duh, Rodgers was actually complicit and perhaps even instrumental in making the deal work behind the scenes all along.
