Twins Spotlight: Episode 15 (Sawyer Gipson-Long)

On Monday night, Seth chatted with Twins minor league RHP Sawyer Gipson-Long on a new episode of Twins Spotlight.

The discussion was live on the Twins Daily social media platforms, Twitter, Facebook or YouTube pages.

Sawyer Gipson-Long was the Twins 6th-round draft pick in 2019 out of Mercer University in Georgia. In his three seasons in college, he went 13-5 while splitting his time between starting and working out of the bullpen. In 140 innings, he struck out 165 batters with just 37 walks.

Upon being drafted, he signed and then pitched in six games at Elizabethton .In 18 1/3 innings, he walked four and struck out 23 batters.

Gipson-Long stands 6-3 and a firm 235 pounds. He's got a couple of good fastballs, a changeup and a breaking ball, so it will be interesting to see if he develops as a starter or reliever.

We asked him about that process, his 2020 season and going to the Instructional League. He had an impressive high school athletic career as well. We haven't had a lot on Gipson-Long at Twins Daily yet so we will get to know another intriguing Twins prospect.

Pretty cool guy and very nice interview. I have to say I wasn't sure why the Twins grabbed him where they did as it looked like he kept the ball in the zone but was pretty hittable.  So developing a good mix and pitches that can better miss bats will be important for him to succeed.

Personality wise I can see the attraction though.  He seems to be an easy going, bright kid with a great knowledge of the body with a good pitchers build.  He is a nice piece of clay to mold.  I am rooting for him to reach his highest potential.

Thanks for sharing!

Another great interview, Seth.

What is becoming clear by viewing these is that the Twins don't only have a system filled with talented baseball players, they have a system filled with very sharp young men. Found his comments interesting when talking about the Twins encouraging him to cut his season at ETon short so he could go back and finish getting his degree

My other question: Did you interview a future trainer for the Twins?

It is possible... hopefully he doesn't have to think about that for awhile!
