5 Overreactions to the Twins Game 1 Loss

Recommended Posts

7th overreaction - the team is cursed.  Although I have been joking (maybe only half joking) that the Twins are under the curse of Big Papi.  Haven't won a series since 2002.  Last season Ortiz was on the Twins?  2002.  It took a victory over the Yankees for the Red Sox to break the curse of the Bambino.  Maybe it takes a victory over the Red Sox to break the curse of Big Papi.

We won a game in 2004

Minnesota used their best arms in the appropriate spots and it just didn’t work out.

I would disagree with this part. I don't think it's hyperbole at all to say that Romo is the team's 8th best bullpen arm (9th if Alcala was on the roster). That's barely a criticism as the seven above him have been really good.

But still, he has no business pitching in the 9th, particularly since he relies on batters chasing his slider out of the zone, and Houston is notoriously good at not chasing pitches out of the zone.

Yesterday the Twins became the first MLB team to lose a playoff game to a sub-.500 team. Of course that is solely due to the 2020 expanded playoffs being new this year, but still...

They also became the first team to walk in the game-winning run in the 9th inning or later.

When it rains, it pours.

I think calling some of these things an overreaction is an overreaction.

That was playoff loss 17 in a row. We’ve been dominated in the playoffs, and that’s now including multiple playoff appearances for nearly everyone on this team as a Twin. On top of that, it’s at home with your ace pitching against a team that was under .500 overall and awful on the road.

These are the big games. These are the ones that matter. At some point, if you keep folding in these games, you are what you are. It wasn’t just bad luck or a bad night for the offense. We saw stupid managerial decisions errors...a basic inability to consistently play fundamentally sound baseball. We’ve seen it all year.

One thing I’m not seeing much of in terms of a complaint: Why the hell couldnt Arraez come up with that throw to second? It wouldn’t have taken a spectacular play. Polanco needs to make that play cleanly, but it’s not a big ask for a marginally good play to save the error there.

I agree. Definitely not overreactions.

On Arraez. That's a tough play. He's coming from one side of 2nd and the ball goes to the other. It was a terrible, inexcusable error for Polanco IMO. Go back and rewatch it. He was trying to look pretty. It was BS and most 6th or 7th grade kids make that play without issue.

Over the course of the season, these things happen. But in the playoffs, they flat out CANNOT. You have to focus and make the easy play there.
