2020 MLB (non-Twins) Trade Deadline Discussion

With things heating up, I figured we could have a thread for general non-Twins trade deadline discussion. A couple notes:

 

- The deadline is 4 p.m. ET on Monday, Aug. 31.

 

- Only players from 60-man pools can actually change teams this year, but players outside of 60-man pools can be included as "players to be named later" (I believe this is to reduce unnecessary player travel and exposure).

Completed trades so far:

 

The Atlanta Braves acquired starting pitcher Tommy Milone from Baltimore for two players to be named later.

 

The San Diego Padres acquired reliever Trevor Rosenthal from Kansas City for outfield prospect Edward Olivares and a player to be named later.

 

A's add second baseman Tommy La Stella from the Angels in exchange for infield prospect Franklin Barreto.

 

The Chicago White Sox acquired center fielder Jarrod Dyson from the Pittsburgh Pirates for international bonus pool space ($243k).

 

The Blue Jays added starting pitcher Taijuan Walker from the Mariners for a player to be named later.

 

The Philadelphia Phillies acquired relievers Heath Hembree and Brandon Workman and cash considerations from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for right-handers Nick Pivetta and Connor Seabold.

LaMarre is in the Cubs 60-player pool on a minor league deal, so he is eligible to be traded this season!

Yup, Givens goes to the Rockies in exchange for two prospects:

 

Tyler Nevin, son of Phil Nevin

 

Terrin Vavra, son of Joe Vavra (and former Gopher)

 

Plus a PTBNL — maybe a child of a player or coach who hasn’t been born yet

The Indians have traded Clevinger to the Padres:

Oh my. Full details aren't known yet, but Jeff Passan of ESPN hears that outfielder Josh Naylor, right-hander Cal Quantrill and shortstop prospect Gabriel Arias are part of the haul for Cleveland. The Padres have been the most active team in advance of Monday's trade deadline and it was probably only a matter of time before they struck on adding a big-name pitcher. Clevinger was the most notable name on the market and San Diego didn't hesitate to get their man. The 29-year-old has registered a 3.18 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 22 2/3 innings (four starts) this season and gives the Padres the type of frontline pitcher they need to make a long postseason run. This move isn't just about this year either, as Clevinger will still have two years of team control after 2020.

I'm adopting the Padres as my NL team... Tatis Jr. is so fun to watch alone, and now they're aggressively trying to keep up with the Dodgers.

Sounds like the Twins are interested in Dylan Bundy and Lance Lynn. Lynn would probably be the more logical choice, but I still struggle with the "fool me once", situation going on with him.

 

Strange year though. The starters have been mostly been really good. This team needs a jolt offensively, but who do you boot from the regular lineup? Arraez? Is there a 2B available who I'd even care to have? Do you just add a better temporary OF or IF while Buxton and Donaldson are out? I mean a guy good enough to fill in now but not good enough to keep a starting job once (if) this team gets back to full health isn't going to move the needle much.

Cleveland's return:

 

- Hedges has been iffy at the plate, but the fact that he plays behind the plate could give them a viable alternative to Perez

- Quantrill looks like he's been an effective reliever this season, and might be able to give Cleveland some innings even if he doesn't move back to starting (he was still a SP last year, and was a top-100 prospect 2 years ago)

- Naylor looks like Greg Allen's replacement in the outfield

- Arias was a top 100 prospect at MLB.com but only FV 40+ at Fangraphs. Was in A-ball last year, a free-swinging SS. Aggressive placement on SD's 60-player pool?

- Cantillo is a lefty starter with great number in A-ball -- also an aggressive move to have this guy on the 60-player pool, but maybe he could ascend quickly (in relief?)

- Miller was a college draftee, infielder, solid minor league numbers so far, reached AA last year at age 22 -- potential Lindor replacement?

- PTBNL Waldron was another college draftee and looks like he could be a fast-rising reliever, but he's not in the Padres' 60-player pool so he can't help anybody this season

I would much rather have the San Diego return in that trade. Though we should give Cleveland the benefit of the doubt. They still do a great job developing players they target in trades.

I'd love it if the Twins could pull off a similar deal to the Padre's for a top of the rotation starter. That deal was roughly equivalent to giving up 3 prospects from the Cavaco, Javier, Enlow, Canterino, and Rooker tier and 3 players like Cave, Wade, Smeltzer, Thorpe, and Astudillo.

Yeah, Cleveland looks like they went for quantity of quality on that one. 

 

But to be fair, they also GOT Clevenger for a right handed relief pitcher who had an 81 ERA+. They're pretty good at identifying pitchers.

 

I wonder how his new clubhouse will handle him. He'll have to be contrite about what happened. More contrite than Plesac was anyway.

The A's got Mike Minor, a trade target of the Twins last year, from their interdivisional rival, the Rangers:

Both players were 2019 draft picks for the Athletics, who took Smith in the third round and Harris in the 11th. MLB.com ranked Smith as the A’s 22nd-best prospect before the trade.

They brought in Derek Jeter and Don Mattingly a couple of years back, but that didn't really seem to pay off.

Looks like the Padres and Blue Jays made out best. The Yanks and Twins both did nothing. The Mets have made some late deals for Todd Frazier and Robinson Chirnos. Sometimes teams doing nothing make out better but both the Yanks and Twins need to get healthy or they are dead

Clevenger was really the only big name moved today. I would have taken David Phelps though. Not surprised about the lack of league-wide activity though.
