Who is the Twins' Ace?

Recommended Posts

Yeah true that to every comment. The guy that gets the ball for game one of the playoffs is that guy TBD. And even Rocco doesn't know who that is yet. It's for sure gonna be whoever has the hot hand and after what i saw tonight against Milwaukee, thats prolly gonna be Maeda.

It’s difficult to consistently keep their sinkers down in the zone. If that trickles up an inch or 2, that pitch is ending up in the 3rd deck. I still have nightmares about Carlos Silva. He was able to keep his sinker down during the 2005 season and had a career season. The very next season he couldn’t locate his sinker and his ERA ballooned to 5.94.

As you said, not having an out pitch is the big concern. Without that, Dobnak is walking a tight rope every time he pitches.

This is similar to most pitchers.  If you fail to locate your pitches to where you need to they will get hit hard.  Any pitcher who leaves pitches middle of zone will get rocked.  This is not limited to sinker pitchers.  It really comes down to movement and how the hitters adjust to knowing when the pitch is a ball or not.  If movement gets limited and hitters staying off the boarder line pitches causing pitcher to go middle zone with little movement it will not be good.  The biggest issue I always had with sinker pitchers was the high babip allowed, and the huge reliance on defense and DP.  When they start walking guys it makes it worse.  All that being said, I am not sold on Dobnak as some great pitcher for years to come, but until he fails lets ride the sinker as far as it can go.
