Hill to IL

Was there a pool on this? I feel like there should have been.

It wouldn't be so bad if he didn't tease us with that potential in his first start. I guess that's kind of his thing though.

Hopefully he'll be back to contribute at some point.

Coming into the season I thought the Twins had great starting pitcher depth, and unfortunately at 10 games into the season we have already seen our #8 starter (Thorpe) on the mound. So far this year Dobnak has been a massively important part of the team, without him stepping up the Twins rotation would be close to desperation mode.

Yeah, around the league there has been a lot pitchers on the IL. Hill needs to be handled very carefully & needs to be taken very slowly after his surgery & time to be stretched out. We want him to be 100% healthy & top form for the PS.

Does being 8-2 with 6 games against teams that are collectively 5-15 coming up and having a 30-man roster until Thursday have anything to do with this use of the IL for Bailey and Hill?  I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Someone correct me, if I'm wrong, but it seems like Bailey could come off the IL in 3 days and Hill could come off in 4.

This seems like roster games.

Berrios, Dobnak and Maeda is a great trio for the remaining games against the Bucs.

Is it possible that Bailey and Hill could be back for the KC series?

Also, it sounds like Odorizzi is on target for a return at KC.

It sure is nice to have pitching depth for once.

Agreed. The Twins are using a lot of caution, but these guys are all veterans with substantial injury histories. Is there a possibility that they will miss more time? Undoubtedly, but going short in games and giving extra rest is the prescription that Rocco uses, so I expect it will continue. Hopefully with continued success.

IL is 10 days these days, right? That's only 2 starts.

And starts are shorter these days, so while it is a deal, it is not so big as it would be if we expected complete games every time...

Oh well.

Not necessarily even two starts. By starting him on the first day he's eligible ("day 11"), they've only missed one start and give most of the rotation an extra day off. With the depth they have, that could be a a good move.

Injuries can happen, but teams usually have a preferred option mapped out a couple weeks in advance. Here's what it could look like

July 28-Bailey

29-Hill

30-Berrios

31-Dobnak

Aug 1-Maeda

2-(bullpen)

3-Thorpe

4-Berrios

5-Dobnak

6-Maeda

7-Odo

8-Bailey's first day eligible; if not, bullpen or Thorpe

9-Hill's first day eligible (otherwise, Berrios on normal rest)

10-Berrios (who is getting an extra day)

11-Dobnak (extra day)

12-Maeda (extra day)

13-Off day

14-(start of 20 straight days)

If Odo, Bailey and Hill are back by the 7th, 8th and 9th and they have six "healthy" pitchers, don't be surprised if Berrios, Dobnak or Maeda has a little "arm tightness."

They could also roll with a six-man rotation through a stretch starting on Aug. 14 that has games on 20 straight days, dropping back to a five-man if one of them goes down. Pineda even becomes available by the end of that 20-game stretch.

(Has anybody pointed that pitching depth is a good thing?)

Pitching depth is good. But it starts to feel like working at a small business where there is a core of permanent employees, in this case the position players, and additionally a revolving band of temps and contract workers whom you barely get to know. :)

The Twins are playing well and 8 AL teams are making the playoffs. If this team keeps winning and can survive with Thorpe/Dobnak/Smeltzer, I might rest up Hill the rest of the way. Maybe just give him a warm up start or two at the end of the year.

He's not a sexy name, but with his track record, Rich Hill is my Game 1 starter if healthy. Odorizzi and Bailey are great depth for the regular season if they can get healthy but I like Hill/Berrios/Maeda as the main three in a playoff rotation more than any top three they've sent out there since 1991.

I loved Santana and Radke, but the Twins could never give them a third arm in the playoffs better than Kyle Lohse, Carlos Silva or Boof Booner.

We shouldn't be surprised about ailments with Hill. He's 40, coming off surgery, and has never managed to stay healthy.

He's been in the big leagues since 2005, and accumulated a grand total of not quite 950 IP in all those years, despite being a starter all that time.

Getting 1 start from Hill is already more than anyone should have expected.

I'm still hopeful that he'll surpass Jaime Garcia's Twins stat line.

2006?

In 06 they had Santana, Liriano, Radke, Bonser, Silva, Baker, Garza, Lohse.  If Liriano hadn't gone down with TJ and Radke hadn't torn his labrum they might have been able to pull it off that season, but of course hindsight is 2020.  I just remember Santana being followed by Liriano seemed like an AWESOME 1 2 punch and Garza was coming along as well.  If that core group could have stayed together uninjured for 4 or 5 years, man oh man what could have been.

Yeah 2006 should have been THE year, but instead of Santana, Liriano and Radke they got Santana, a gimpy Radke and a Bonser.
