What indications do you have to believe that the NHL & NBA won't be able to do their seasons? I'd be interested in learning.

Indications?? How about average physical collisions per minute? Even as a kid I could tell you the order of violence. Football by far was the worst, with regular concussions and injured limbs, every game. Second was soccer, with constant feet smacking together, lots of leg tackles, pushing and shoving, etc. Third and fourth were basketball and hockey, and somewhere around fifth was baseball, a relatively safe sport. Only tennis and golf were safer.

 

As far as spreading Corona with maximum physical contact, I'd start with kid wrestling, all combat sports, then football (face to face collisions on every play) basketball (constant contact around basket, indoors), hockey, etc. Because these men are going all out, there's no way masks would help them. Look what is happening to baseball - a relatively low contact sport, played outdoors, now with empty stands. Still, two teams are now stricken. Were they doing anything different than the Twins are doing? 

 

Anyway, if you can imagine how radically increasing player proximity to other players, plus regular hard physical collisions, plus men sweating furiously, gasping for breath, throwing off spit and sweat particles in all directions... how all that could spread Corona more efficiently than men spaced out on a baseball field, there's you indication. I predict those sports will grind to a halt within two weeks.

Then again, ask yourself. How many persons close to you have tested positive for the virus. I know two who have tested negative. One of those was ME prior to elective surgery. The nurse at the office that tested me said they had two positive tests out of 600 people they tested (601 including me I guess). Nevertheless, MLB should have used the bubble method in 3 or 4 areas with two close ballparks (Chicago, NYC, Baltimore-Washington, Bay Area, L.A.).

Yeahright. Did you see the dugouts during the last week? Maskless players sitting with their faces less than 2 feet apart conversing extensively. Baseball people have never been known for being cerebral, but it has been hugely disappointing to me how ignorant teams have been. Everyone--EVERY ONE-- in the dugout should be wearing a mask.

You may think that 99% sounds good. Now, write down the name of 100 people you know. Then cross one name off and say goodbye forever. An uncle of mine tested positive and passed away less than a week later. With the number of positive tests within MLB someone's going to become seriously ill and/or die. It's just a matter of time.

I stated about a month ago on this site that we were in the "bargaining" phase of our grieving process and nothing that has happened since in the whole country... to include baseball... has dissuaded me from this opinion.

It was the post he was responding to that was the egregious post. The 99% came from the other person. What the poster you quoted did was to emphasize what 1% means and should not be disregarded so callously as what the other poster implied. And the use of quote marks around “gets it” was either a misuse of quote marks, or further spreads misinformation with the implication that this is really nothing. That said, you are correct in that everyone needs to contain their comments as it relates to baseball. If you want to discuss broader issues of the virus, there is a dedicated thread in the Sports Bar forum. But callousness and disregard toward the seriousness of this situation, specifically or generally, will not be tolerated at TD.

They were able to complete soccer seasons in Spain, England, Italy, etc. without any major outbreaks, and there is a LOT more close physical contact in soccer than baseball.

 

My conclusion: MLB is proving inept and providing and enforcing a protocol that keeps players from getting/spreading COVID.

Doesn't personal accountability play a role here?  The Twins have something that could be special for this year.  Didn't Rocco, and then Nelson stand up before the season started to share with the players that they need to make sure they are keeping themselves safe?  If not - they should have.  This virus is out there, and for the greater good of the team - players need to stay home, and keep themselves isolated.  When playing - give up the high fives and such for a year.  Wear the masks - sure they suck, but it all starts with one, just ONE player being exposed to it to negatively impact the entire team if they were to pass it on.  They also should hold each other accountable, I hope they are doing just that.

I'll say this regarding some of the statements on the thread:

 

1. I think the "bubble concept" was impossible with MLB. The outdoor Spring Training sites are in Florida and Arizona, it's like 100 degrees there and if you're playing 3-4 games per stadium in areas like that, you've got lots of day games in unbearable heat. Sure, you could have picked 5 "regional sites" and just gone from there, but at that point you've only got like six teams playing each other all year. Baseball tried to do their best to have ACTUAL BASEBALL. The NBA is hosting a tournament, it's not even the same.

 

 

 

First, I really hope you are right. I hope the full 60 games are played for everyone, and we have no further postponements.

 

What concerns me is how one Marlin (the commissioner says they know who he is, but obviously are respecting privacy) introduced the virus which rippled through the schedules of several teams.

 

How is it the NCAA can host multiple teams for the college world series but MLB, which is experimenting so much already--extra innings starting with runners in scoring position, 7 inning doubleheaders, etc., couldn't take similar quarantine measures? Is there some need for larger stadia that I'm missing? 

 

Again, I really hope they play all the games. I'm just concerned about another outbreak. The point wouldn't be to stop all travel, but to further what MLB has already done, minimizing travel, keeping people safe. I get that the regional networks want evening games. I don't think that would be so hard.

 

I'm glad they're playing. So much bleak news of late. It's a joy to see the game again. A friend who initially disliked the cardboard cutouts now has grown used to them and compares it to the Sgt. Pepper album cover. Fun to see.
