Who is hurt most in the Twins system with no MILB season?

Now that we have a MLB season for 2020, however it turns out, I think we should re-visit this discussion. We have, at least initially, a roster of players to participate in 2020.

 

It's WAY TO EASY to just state EVERY milb player is missing out. Hopefully, eventually, there will be some sort of fall/winter/advanced EST that will help bridge the gap from the loss of a milb season.

 

And there has been previous discussions about the 60 man roster initially. But now that we have that 60 man roster, I think its time to again address who in the system loses the most with no milb season.

 

The top 4, IMO:

 

Wander Javier: unbelievable talent, but needs to play, and now he can't.

 

Tyler Wells: the 2018 milb SP pitcher of the year who underwent surgery. He may not be a TOP prospect, but he has produced. IMO, think Dobnak suddenly having TJ surgery. Wouldn't you want a season of rehab?

 

Akil Badoo: While I don't want to directly compare players, as it's not truly fair, he is a Hunter/Buxton/Cellistino athlete with nowhere to play and get back on track.

 

Jordan Balazovic: I think this is Covid related. I've tried to read a few things but get lost in legalise. The Blue Jays, from what I'm hearing, are hurting and hunting for a home. So I'm still speculating that Balazovic is "sick" or having visa issues. Otherwise, there is reaĺy no reason to not having your top pitching prospect in camp.

 

I think an arguement could be made that even guys on the 60 man roster are going to be impacted. Sure they get coaching and simulated games. But how does that compare to regular, daily play? Hopefully it makes a difference.

 

Who else in the system is "losing out" the most from no milb season?

***Jordan Balazovic stayed in Fort Myers, so no visa issues, and there is no reason to speculate at this time that his absence is COVID related.***

 

I think Balazovic is not in camp because he only has 227 2/3 professional innings under his belt, just one appearance above High A and is not on the 40-man roster (which is why Dakota Chalmers is on the camp roster). Balazovic may be added at a later date, but I'm personally not convinced he has much more to gain by working out in St. Paul as opposed to Fort Myers.

 

Wells and Baddoo would be my top two, but to add some guys not on your list: Landon Leach, Yunior Severino, Will Holland, and DaShawn Keirsey.

Thanks Tom! I totally missed on Balazovic staying behind in Ft Myers. But for a guy with that much talent, so high in the system, (prospect wise), who would have probably begun the season in AA if things were normal, hopefully hitting AAA at some point, still perplexed he's not already at camp.

 

Like your list of additional players and almost included Leach in my own list. I also almost included Cavaco, but so young, I left him out. Severino I forgot about but good call.

It`d be nice if they could open up Ft. Myers for all our prospects that aren`t on the 60 man that need that development during this time. They could have inter squad games & even scrimmages w/ other teams that are open to play

Have a request from those of you at TD, maybe Tom or Seth, who have close contact with some of the guys running the minor leagues for the Twins. We hear about player X staying in Fort Myers and continuing to work out. Does anyone have a listing of who those players are? And more important, what they are doing and how long they have/will be there?

 

I know the dorms there house something like 50, or is it 80, players. Now that some of those there have moved to the Twins Cities, have other younger players arrived? Is there a lot more organized instruction going on than we know about? Would certainly hope so.

I agree with you on Cavaco. Guys that young are getting better simply by having some more time to mature physically, and he can get a ton simply out of instruction/drills. Live game action would be nice, but he doesn't really require that in order to improve right now.

I only know that Balazovic stayed in Fort Myers because Seth shared that in the comments of the 60-man roster announcement article. I suspect Seth will be passing along some notes regarding what the prospects who didn't get invited to Summer Camp are up to, but a comprehensive roster of who is staying at the complex may be a tough ask.

 

I would be shocked if the dorms are filled to anything close to capacity right now. That complex was completely shutdown for deep cleaning earlier (I wanna say about a month ago), but there are guys who are based out of Fort Myers, train there, but live in off-site housing.

Derek Falvey has told us a couple of times that the spring training facilities are closed except for players on rehab assignments. 

 

Balazovic is there, but I don't believe he is able to work out at the Twins facilities, unless that has changed in the last week or two. 

 

I know Tyler Wells is there. A few other guys who are rehabbing injuries are there. Several players from Venezuela are there because they couldn't leave (or they didn't know if they could get them back, etc.).

 

I think they could get as many as 120 in the dorms, but again, there is no reason for MLB to try to push 100-150 minor elaguers to Florida right now.

 

I have no doubt that Jeremy Zoll, Alex Hassan and the minor league coaches are in semi-frequent communication with the players. Zoom meetings, etc.  Obviously the initial focus was on getting the MLB season going and being ready for that, but there will be planning. 

 

I would be shocked if they ever have more than 25, maybe 30, people into Ft. Myers at any given time this offseason, if that. Too much risk.

How does this season affect the Rule 5 Draft/eligibility for the Rule 5 Draft?

You'd think with the great training facilicities the Twins have in Ft. Myers which also includes housing, they could have upwards of 80 prospects down there playing games on the multiple field, and holding a pretty closed camp for 35 days in the leat. Players are already being paid, so that wouldn't be an issue. It is just keeping them isolated, and if you are doing baseball hard, you don't need to go "on the town." 

 

Be interesting to see where Rule 5 as well as minor league service time ends up.
