On New MLB Proposal, How it Relates to the Twins and a Potential Solution

Recommended Posts

coronavirus sweeps through Phillies camp, and more owner-player deadlock over loose change.

That's enough winning for one day for me.

Phillies, Blue Jays, Lightning in hockey. As frustrating as the bickering is, it seems increasing like it may not matter anyway. We may be stuck with Nascar and Golf until 2021. Ugh.

Another day. Another day with no agreement. Another day closer to September 30.

An agreement tomorrow would leave a 71 day window for regular season games to be played before September 30.

What exactly was the players counter-proposal to the owner's 60 game plan? As each day passes, the gap can't be that big.

NFL is going to play, could be as few as five people left on the field at the end, but they're going to play.

Player comp as a percentage of revenue is dropping because teams have identified other investments they believe are more productive. Teams are still spending the money just in other areas. You and I and many others called for more investment in analytics. There are also far more employees in player development and other areas. The Cardinals for example have increased from 260 to 400 non-baseball employees.

Teams have also gotten smarter about the length of contracts. This is not a product of an unwillingness to spend but a reaction to the number of these deals that have been absolute shipwrecks. I have provided that data to you as well which of course you continue to ignore.

To an unbiased observer with modest business acumen this makes perfect sense.

Total pay to players dropped each of the last two years.....before this year. It may or may not make business sense, but if you were the players, how would you react to that, given the owners have seen revenues increase for at least 17 straight years?

Also, any opinion on the report that 6-8 owners would prefer not playing baseball at all? Those darn players are at it again.

I'm not sure it's quite that simple... there's a huge problem in baseball that was never fixed around revenue sharing.. Market differences make a big deal. I'd bet a sizeable chunk of change that it's the smaller market teams that don't want to play. I could be wrong, but I can easily see that being a problem given how vast the differences in revenue are for say the Yankees compared to the Pirates.
