Prospects Live 2-round mock

Recommended Posts

I figured many would have interest in this. Hopefully, we have a draft in some variety this year, but in my contacts with the league office, the story has changed a bit each time on what is exactly going on, so I won't assume anything!

Multiple writers from the Prospects Live team put together this mock. I handled the second Twins pick along with multiple other selections. Enjoy!

Interesting, to say the least, as no question any draft of this nature is so grossly affected by the Corona virus and implications we don't know yet. Not the least being the cancellation of the college season after only a few weeks. But you already know that. Though I admit to having no idea about how HS talent is affected in the draft per 2019 summer sessions or spring ball throughout the country before stoppage. Any thoughts on that?

It may simply be BPA, but thus far, the current FO has shown a penchant for position players first, and grab upside arms later. In this mock, with the Twins selecting a HS arm first, your choice of Henry is all the more interesting as the Twins seem to be looking for arms that have that ONE PITCH they really like and feel they can work off of that. Henry seems to fit that mold.

Been a while since the Twins went that hard early for pitching.

Not much draft talk on this site considering the draft is just around the corner.

Here's a CBS Mock Draft:   They have the Twins selecting Cade Cavalli

Pick: RHP Cade Cavalli, Oklahoma ($2,570,100 slot value)

This draft class is very deep in college pitching and, in our mock draft, the Twins can pick from several who would fit nicely in into the middle of the first round in a typical draft year (Cavalli, South Carolina's Carmen Mlodzinski, Duke's Bryce Jarvis, Georgia's Cole Wilcox, etc.). Cavalli will touch 98 mph while looking like he's playing catch, and his breaking ball gives him a potential out-pitch. Some injuries and control questions keep him out of the top half of the first round, but there's nice upside here. Our R.J. Anderson ranked Cavalli as the No. 16 prospect in the draft class.

Is anyone else paying attention to draft?

I`m surprised by so many HS players so high in this draft, especially when there is so many great college prospects. I`d be surprised if FO select a HS player 1st round. It`d be great if we could grab Cavalli

Agreed! I'm looking forward to it too.

I think it will be really interesting to see what Falvine does this year. After their fourth draft, we'll be able to see some pretty clear patterns emerge.

Also, it seems like the strength of this draft (college pitchers) seems to deviate from what they typically like to do. In the last three years, they have drafted only two college pitchers in the first five rounds. It seems like this year, they could draft another two or three even though they only have four picks.

FWIW, Miodzinski is Baseball America's mock selection. And let's be honest, name alone should make him a perfect Twins selection, lol.

I do follow the ML draft but not nearly like the NFL as the baseball draft has always been such a crapshoot, and it usually takes at least a few years, if not 5, to find out if you were right.

Our FO absolutely does have a pattern after 3 drafts, which I touched on in a previous post. But with all the craziness of missed and cancelled seasons, only 5 rounds and 4 picks, and a college heavy draft, especially in the pitching area, and supposedly no milb season to be played, I see very few HS players beyond the first couple of rounds.

Pure speculation on my part, but guessing a deviated year will bring about deviation in the Twins thinking and they could very well go 3 or even 4 college players. Would they dare throw caution to the wind and make all 4 picks pitchers? With a deep and mostly balanced system, I could see it happening.

Jonathan Mayo's latest mock draft has the Twins selecting Justin Foscue a 2B from Mississippi State.  Foscue seems like a safe pick, I'm not sure about his upside though.  It feels to me like Thad Levine is a bit more willing to take a gamble on upside in round 1 than to play it safe, so I'm not sold on this prediction.

"27. Twins: Justin Foscue, 2B, Mississippi State

It’s extremely possible that Foscue’s offensive profile has him coming off the board before this pick if teams prefer the floor of a safe college bat, but he’d be in the mix for Minnesota if he’s available."

He's got Max Meyer going number 5 overall to the Blue Jays too.

Max to the Jays is nearly a done deal, barring someone grabbing Meyer ahead of the Jays.

As far as the Twins, they have a prep shortstop that they're very interested in that could be in play tomorrow evening. We'll see if they go there or if they stick with pitching.

New CBS Mock Draft has the Twins selecting RHP Clayton Beeter, Texas Tech.

Pick: RHP Clayton Beeter, Texas Tech ($2,570,100 slot value)

Beeter is one of the most fascinating players in the draft class. He's shot up draft boards these last few weeks even while college baseball has been shut down because his Trackman data (spin rate, etc.) so off the charts good. There's risk here -- Beeter had Tommy John surgery as a freshman and walked 20 in 20 1/3 innings as a sophomore -- but analytical inclined teams like the Twins see untapped potential. Our R.J. Anderson ranked Beeter as the No. 37 prospect in the draft class.

They have Max Meyer going number 6 to the Mariners.
