Maeda and Chacin

Neither of these two looked real good today against Tampa Bay. Grateral impressed the Dodgers yesterday. Maeda looked better than Chacin, but it just didn't look like he had much and he threw quite a few pitches in two innings. I know it's early and I hope he gets more dynamic. But just didn't look that good so far. Well Chacin snapped out of it a little.

My second inning take is quite different. It started with two errors. Should have been two outs. When pitchers are asked to get 5 outs in an inning the pitch count takes a hit.

I am much more concerned about the Twins ability to turn balls in play into outs than Maeda’s performance today.

Its an ST game so no point in putting too much stock in performance.

Graterol is going to be a stud and LAD knows it. I never wanted this trade.

Spring of 2006 Santana, Liriano, Radke and Guerrier all had ERA's north of 4.6.     When someone says this time of year "I know its early..." it reminds me of my son's 4th grade basketball team when a parent would say "I know they are volunteer refs...".    You should probably just stop right there.    Or in the case of the volunteer refs you may continue with "and I appreciate their efforts".

Whoop!    Just to clarify.   I appreciate everything else about your post.    Unrelated note, I thought Buxton was cleared to play a while ago but has not appeared.   Anyone know his status?  As alluded to earlier, I don't place a lot of value on how players do this time of year because I don't know what they are working on but I do think its important to get the reps.

To be completely honest I thought Maeda looked better than his first start. He made some pitches and at times looked pretty sharp. His line also looks a lot better if the two plays are made.

As for Chacin, that first inning wasn't great for him, but he settled down after that. I don't know that he can have another outing like that if Dobnak keeps pitching well, but who knows. Depends on how badly the Twins want him to pan out.

Each of the competitors for the fifth starter role should have three or four more appearances, yes? I think you can throw out a clunker inning here or there for all of them. So far, Dobnak has been very good, but it is way too early to think of each outing as an elimination outing. In addition, for Chacín, they have to keep him on the roster as I understand it, meaning if he loses the competition, he is lost to the team. Fair or not, that gives him a leg up in the competition.

Maeda has a roster spot, working on mechanics and getting ready for season. Chacin pitching for a job, to me looked like same issues that he had last year. Maybe he just does not have it anymore, to early to tell. But of the 2, Chacin definitely has more riding on his spring training performance.

Who knows what the pitchers are working on in those games.  They might be trying something new or working on something specific.

I'm not worried about Maeda and if Chacin amounts to anything, it will be a win.

If the Dodgers were so sure if this, why was their first choice to trade him to Boston?

Buxton is cleared to resume baseball activities.  He is hitting in the cages and practicing.  Has not played yet.  Maybe sometime next week or this week likely starting at the minor league fields

100%.

I shouldn't have to say this, and of course most comments here are tongue-in-cheek, but in ST, especially for veterans, we have no clue what's really going on during games, much less behind the scenes. While a prospect may be looking to impress and earn a job, or gain attention, a lot of veterans are simply rounding in to form and working on things. Regardless of opposition, count, etc, a veteran may be spotting his FB exclusively, or working on a breaking ball or change the same. Just getting a feel for an offering. A guy could be throwing bullets or nasty stuff in the pen and side workouts impressing everyone, but go in to a game situation working on a single pitch, or a new grip, etc. Nothing to get excited about or worked up about at this point.
