Boston getting cold feet - Graterol's health puts blockbuster on pause

The board was screaming to sign old man Ryu. If the board truly wants to win now, Maeda is the way to go. I hate to see Balazovic or Duran even mentioned, but it's time to win.

Ryu only cost money.... It's not even close to the same thing. But this is the price you pay for not signing Darvish or Corbin, or any of the big names this year. Or trading for Stroman.

There are a few mentions out there of Balazovic replacing Graterol and that the deal is being finalized. I say "mentions", not "reports", because I can't say I've seen any verified reporters claiming this yet.

Balazovic for Graterol— but pending a review of the medicals, of course.

Mike, would you quit living in the past. We will always have more prospects than money and Falvey completely controls prospects. Darvish we came in 2nd, Corbin was never on our radar. Who on the board would trade Buxton for Stroman? Tell us which free agent we should have signed instead of JD. Stop confusing free agency with Christmas.

My username should make clear where my allegiance resides.  Quite the mess this has become.  The Dodgers shouldn't be required to add the deal.  The Twins shouldn't add to the deal.  Boston has got to complete this deal as is...and now.  The way Graterol's name has been sullied is just unfair.  This could seriously affect his career earnings down the road.  About 10 players don't know what the hell they're doing next week.  After seeing what Manfred did in the Astros scandal it's clear the man lacks cajones but he's got to do something good for the league.  Right now it's a free for all, with teams doing as they please without regard for propriety.

Chances are this deal is going to get done with or without the Twins anyways so the FO might as well pull out of the deal if we’re being asked to give up more prospects in addition to Graterol. Besides, we can always pursue Maeda in a separate deal (assuming he doesn’t get dealt to Boston), or we can always call back Miami and try to work out a deal for Hernandez like we were trying to earlier in the offseason. However, I’d much rather have Smith instead.

I get some of what you’re saying but Manfred has no business mucking about in trades amongst teams. Literally not his job.

I disagree.  Bowie Kuhn, while imperfect was absolutely right to intervene in Charlie O's trades.  The same should be done here, except to push the trades through.  There is precedent.

You mean that time the commissioner stepped in to prevent trades because someone was so obviously over-stepping their bounds by gaming the free agency system and liquidating players, many of whom had no contract?

Not exactly the same thing here, is it?

Just Say NO to anything more.

Dodgers badly want Betts.

Red Sox badly want to trade Price & Betts.

Twins can walk away and be fine.

Absolutely correct!

Or the Twins put forward my previously postulated counter-offer:

Graterol ( "damaged goods"...hah)...Gordon...a high "XYZ A+" prospect for.....

Maeda and Sale.

And you better take it?

"...review of the records..."  Pffft. They had all the info they needed already. They're using the TJ surgery history now to hold this trade hostage, because the Red Sox mgt. is getting royally caned by their fans. They let go a budding superstar for a couple of barely-tasted-mlb players their base had never heard of, and now they want to reneg out of sheer embarrassment.

You absolutely cannot tell me, with the millions of $ at stake, that they didn't already know everything that was already available. "A review of the records..." Fer cryin' out loud, are they trying to pretend they just got the info? That things were being hidden away to try to hookwink them? What a pantload. They hoodwinked themselves.

I already loathe this organization with an abiding passion, as well as their entitled fan base. Makes me wish the Curse of the Bambino was still in effect.

Tick tock...tick tock.

My bet at this point is that the Dodgers step up to save their deal(s) by offering more to the Red Sox...and the Twins are out of the deal. Maeda (or more likely other pieces) go to the Red Sox from the Dodgers, and the Twins are on the outside looking in. Better than overpaying...but disappointing relative to where we thought we were 48 hours ago.

I'm thinking this might be the way it all works out. I'd miss not getting Maeda, but I'd be fine getting Bustah Gatorade back.

But can you just imagine how enthused Maeda would be to be heading to Boston, after they pulled this crap a week before ST?

Oh, hey, wait a minute...

Didn't Balazovic have that painful hangnail that one time?

Might nix that deal, too...

I suggest you read this:

Yes, folks, please read. It's excellent, and very helpful to read if it's accurate (and I've no reason to assume it's not).

I was particularly struck by what is described as the receiving team genuinely having little information on players until the trade is agreed to. Basically, it's IL records, what's available publicly, and if scouts or other folks find things in the course of doing their normal job.

If, on a scale of 1-10, 1 is "BoSox knew nothing on Graterol" and 10 is "BoSox have access to everything," it seems like the receiving team is at about a 2-3. I assumed they were more like 5-6.

I believe the majority of people on this forum will not be happy with any type of trade involving prospects but fail to mention most of you were screaming at the top of your lungs to dump some for starting pitching.

You could have 5 fantastic prospects and all of them when they enter the league suck or you can have 5 that make a difference and have quality careers. You just don't know and is why the Twins should figure something out and pull the trigger.

Now when it comes to Boston, well that is a different story. I hate the Yanks, in fact that was the one team I hated the most except for Jeter, but now that has shifted to Boston. A team that has made a mockery of baseball trades.

What makes me mad is how they didn't even care about this kid's career. They didn't do the necessary research or if they did they simply didn't care about babbeling his medical history all over the internet instead of just turning down the trade in the beginning. Pathetic .

I would continue to talk. They have a lousy farm system, bundle up some of our excess so they can save face. #3 starting pitchers, reasonably priced for 4 years don't grow on trees.

I also think the Twins should throw in a lottery ticket if needed to get Maeda. He's a huge addition, we should do what we can to land him, within reason.

Well if the rumors of Balazovic getting added are correct, you'll probably hate the Red Sox even more.

Dan Hayes reported yesterday in response to those rumors that the Twins have said no, Balazovic is not on the table as either additional or instead of
