Front Page: FEINSAND: Twins to Sign Josh Donaldson

Recommended Posts

Well, well, it looks like we're going to be quite the offensive team again! It seems my theory about the FO being cautious to spend money on starting pitching but was more open to signing hitters is coming true. As it's already been mentioned, this is the 2nd most guaranteed money for a player who is at least 34 years old and the Twins' largest FA signing ever, so it's a bold move, but for the present time, I think he'll be worth it. Most of the risk for the present time will come with the potential for injury (only 496 PAs in 2017 and 219 in 2018).

Good move, this certainly salvages the offseason, though they really needed to bring in somebody to challenge Berrios as a true ace. By my calculations this puts the cap at about $137M... right in the $135-$140M range I predicted earlier this offseason. Groovy!

when the FO trades for a front of the rotation type starter you’ll be way low

Fantastic work, now go trade for a starter.

If you’re going to push the accelerator down halfway, may as well floor it and see what happens.

I would wait until the deadline on this.

Is there a clear upgrade available in a trade? Price, Archer, Gray among others, have recent seasons of ineffectiveness.  I just want more of track record before we give up assets and take on more dollars on a risk like pitching.

I'm way more confident the Twins will get the SP they need with Donaldson in the house. Don't want to waste the first two years his contract!

This front office is supposed to be pitching-oriented. I suspect they can find someone they like who is worth the risk in acquiring.

If not, pass and wait for later.

GREATEST. TUESDAY. EVER

What an intriguing scroll through the espn site- 1st article, Twins sign Donaldson. Next article, Cora fired.

Wow.

I hate the thought of anybody losing their job, but sometimes it's justified. I believe it is in this case, and I wonder if Beltran will be next.

Signing Donaldson and extending Sanó sets a higher floor for the offense for the next several years, even after Cruz and (presumably) Rosario move on. Perhaps a good time to take the risk of offering a top hitting prospect in trade. If Kirilloff or Larnach as a centerpiece would get the Twins a good arm, they should do it.

Hate to be that guy, but this is just more proof that the Pohlads are cheap, cheap, cheap!!1!

He wanted $110 and they only gave him $92.

Huh??   The largest FA contract in Twins history... and the Pohlads are cheap?

Is this sarcasm or just Air Force math?   Keep that up Chief and folks might think you were actually a Marine ;).

ECSTATIC...but not overly surprised. The way this was dragging on, frustrating or not, told me our offer was legit and we were in on him seriously.

Couple quick points:

1] Shouldn't have to say it, but WOW, what an offense!

2] Infield defense is improved, at least a little. And that's not a knock on Sano who I think has been banged on a bit too much. But Donaldson is flat out better and should help make Polanco's life just a little bit easier.

3] Team game. More offense, better defensively at even one spot, all helps the pitchers.

4] This sets a precedent not only to fans, and the rest of the league, (including future FA), but to the CURRENT TWINS on roster. Don't underestimate that.

5] Sano is going to be fine, if not good at 1B. Now, he won't be a polished product immediately, but he is a big target with reach, he charges balls well, he goes after pop ups well, and his hands aren't the problem, it's always been about lateral range. Lateral range won't be as big of an issue at 1B as it was at 3B. Guy was a SS when signed and moved to 3B. He's dealt with smashes, hard grounders, rollers all his life. Don't tell me he can't handle some scoops in the dirt. Again, not a finished product immediately, but he's going to be fine.

Plus, large man, titanium plate in leg, 1B is probably easier on his body.

I am so pumped right now I may have to pop the top on a few to celebrate!!
