They don't have a surplus of good starters.

Would you take Sonny Gray, Discalfini or Bauer over current 3,4,5 options the Twins have?

Im just looking for a little Trader Jack McKeon finish to the Twins Cold Stove Winter

Get Marte from the Pirates and spin him (or Rosie or maybe even the injury waiting to happen) for a significant* starter

* downgraded Impact to Significant

Maybe Keuchel thought he was signing with the Cubs, not the White Sox?

Maybe he thought he was signing with an up and coming team with solid young prospects, good nucleus and ownership who is willing to pay money to support them, even if the window isn't wide open yet.

Keuchel to the White Sox.  Twins get both sides of the "double-edged" sword as he signs with division opponent.  Looks like the trade route it is.  I'm on board with Matthew Boyd for starters.  People will bring up the Colorado guys, but NL-to-AL guys scare me.

While I still think it’s very possible that we pull off a Donaldson signing, the likelihood that we come away with the “impact pitching” that this FO has referred to is starting to seem increasingly unlikely...

If not Ryu, I feel like the team’s best chance at improving the rotation lies in a trade with Boston due to their incentive to shed payroll, although I’m not confident that Eovaldi or Price ever return to form. Ideally I’d prefer Boston’s Rodriguez, but after losing Wheeler, Bumgarner, Keuchel, and soon to be Ryu I’d hate to end up with either Walker or Sanchez as our “impact pitcher.”

Honestly, I didn't want Kuechel much but thought he could be had for maybe $15m per year with an extra year you didn't want to pay.

At the price he got, give up prospects and go get a better pitcher in trade. Take the hit on the chin in the farm system and legitimately improve the team.

Who is trading ace pitching?

I would be thrilled to see precious prospects traded for better pitching. Thrilled.

It's pretty clear at this point that the Twins are only going to go get FA pitching if it's going to fit in their predetermined $$ per value for each player.

I wonder if this is just a pitching thing... they've been willing to dip in for several hitters over the past few years, and I'm surprised they've offered Donaldson a 4 year deal.

Here's hoping they're willing to pull off a trade or two. I don't see what they're going to do with all our OF prospects, so why not trade from the surplus?

Maybe we're going the Cleveland way of doing things, we'll just Clevinger/Plesac/Civale our way out of this predicament.

Keuchel is not anywhere near an ACE...at this point the Twins need another reliable experience pitcher period. They are banking on 2.5. slots with a bunch of rookies.

And if Odo, Pineda or Berrios go down with injury, the bottom falls out on this lack of SP 'plan' by the FO

Which took a couple years..... So, in two or more years?

Swinging strikes on the rise across the league but the last two years Keuchel’s swinging strikes rate is down. Opposing batters (non-pitchers) put up an OPS of over 800 against him last year. The decline has begun. There is little space for more decline.

The Twins need to acquire a pitcher that can match up in the playoffs. Had they signed a Keuchel they would still have that need. They don’t need Keuchel for the back end the next three years. They need those opportunities to go to the young players.

However, after this year Odorizzi is gone, Pineda is gone after 2 years. So they are actually going to need someone whether it's Ryu or Keuchel to slot in as at least that #3 - #4 dude even if Grateral, or Thorpe pass them to be a #2 starter in the future. So a 3 or 4 year deal solidifies the rotation for next year, but also give them something to work with in 2 and 3 years. I'm not confident that the Twins will handle the White Sox this year.

Right now we are suggesting guys like Nova, a guy the White Sox don't want back, or a guy like Wood someone the Reds don't even want back??

Those guys aren't going to make their former clubs rotation, yet they'd be our #3 for the first 40 games. There is a problem. I mean might as well bring back Perez?

I was obviously higher on Keuchel than others - I think he'd comfortably be our second best pitcher and, like Berrios, give us close to 200 innings.

I don't think there is another pitcher out there with both the stuff and work horse ability left out there. Nova could give us those innings but he's a solid #5 type. Ryu is a stud but I don't think he'll pitch more than 150 innings going forward. I honestly don't know where the Twins will spend the money they might have left anymore. They can probably bring in more bullpen arms and some 4/5 for the rotation if they wanted. I don't imagine they'll sign Donaldson or Ryu. At this point, I'm not even sure they should spend much more in FA, payroll concerns be damned.

I think Keuchel fits the mold of 'veteran competency' that although might not be an Ace anymore, should hold his own for 5 innings against NYY in the Playoffs.  To me that's what this offseason should have been all about - congratulations FO, 101 wins!  Central Division!  I was impressed and excited.  But I thought this FO had aspirations for more.  Of course they do, that's why they're here.  They're opinion may only be that they're only 'feeling a breeze' and the window isn't truly open.  It's cracked, like when it's 40 on a January day and you're trying to get some fresh air in the house.

But, as a fan, I watched the Central Division Ceiling in the Gardy era, which is a great reprieve from the Long Winter, and is fun for an evening or 2 at Target Field.  Continued Central Division Ceiling approach, which may be the most profitable, will mostly breed apathy from fans who will choose their last summer days at the lake.  The FO knows this but might be banking on a new demographic of 18-30s who don't remember the excitement of a Cristian Guzman triple, and will show up to Target Field to see Smeltzer and Tyson Ross.

Would Keuchel have tipped the scales against the Yankees?  He could have been a piece of a rearranged puzzle that got it done.
