Front Page: Official Twins Winter Meetings Day 4 Thread

This seems right, in my opinion. Not to mention the KBO has a team called the Twins: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_Twins. Seems like an opportunity to build some sort of coalition.

My father spent some time in Korea for some educational cultural enrichment thing, I forget the details, but you can be sure I still got LG Twins cap! Not sure why it's pink though.

I think "beggars can't be choosers" applies to the Angels rotation these days. :)

With Rendon and Simmons in the IF, Keuchel makes a lot of sense. He won't cost as much either. While Bumgarner and Ryu would be nice. They already have Pujols, Trout, and now Rendon on the books for close to 100 million. That makes me think Tehran would be the 2nd pitcher they prefer, or someone in that range who can pitch 180 innings

Yup. Falvey and the other nine FO guys are just sitting around the hotel suite having a no pants day eating Cheetos.

How many more times are you going to try and justify the Twins organization on doing absolutely nothing when it comes to improving the starting rotation year after year?

This is why we lose, we can not and will not be able to compete against teams like the Yanks and Houston without making some type of change.

It is mind boggling on how much this board continues to fall into the trap of trade rumors and FA rumors every and I mean every single year only to have the Twins do nothing.

It doesn't matter how this team performs. The management only cares about dollar signs. I mean how can you be fooled year after countless year?!?

When the off-season started, they were looking at a rotation of Berrios, Dobnak...Smeltzer..........um, Graterol................and, uh, someone else.

Since then, they’ve managed to re-up Odorizzi and Pineda, the latter for multiple years. They’ve also taken care of the hole at backup catcher.

It hasn’t been glamorous, and they shouldn’t be finished, but it hasn’t been nothing, either.

Yes, but we had Odo and Pineda last year, so it's not like they added anyone. Isn't the idea to get better? Say what you will about Gibson, but his departure leaves a whole, so in terms of starting pitching I would argue that we're actually worse than last season.

Pineda’s and Odorizzi’s contracts expired. They were free agents. Yes they were on the team last year, but signing them filled a need that opened the day the season ended. Again, they aren’t glamorous additions, but they are additions.

When is the last time the Twins made a major move at the Winter Meetings?

You could delete “at the Winter Meetings,” a silk pose a valid question.

People will point to Cruz, but I don’t consider 1 year 14 million with a 12 million team option major.

Ervin Santana 5 years ago? Ricky Nolasco? (Keep in mind the full value of those contracts was barely more than one year a Cole’s contract from the Yankees this year).

What a depressing franchise to root for.

Remember, signing free agents to big contracts it stupid.....just look at the Nationals, Red Sox, Astros, Cubs, Giants, Yankees, or Phillies. They have only won 12 of the last 15 World Series titles. Morons (right, Phil Mackey?).

Is this Derek Faley? While what you say is technically correct, you're talking semantics. They haven't improved the glaring need that is starting pitching. They "check in" on guys, and I'm sure we'll hear the excuses shortly, but I think the expectation by many is to hear about impact pitching coming through this open window.

odo was not a free agent...but he did decide to stay for $17MM. I think he regrets that, given the market.... (not that he regrets staying here, but it looks like he'd have gotten PAID).

Yes, actually he was a free agent. He had a qualifying offer attached, but he had no contract with the Twins and was at liberty to sign with any team. If he had been on, say, Atlanta last year and Falvey signed him, I’m guessing people would be a little more enthusiastic about him. There’s an argument to be made that he was the fifth best pitcher in a stacked free agent class. I find it interesting, though not really surprising, that a contingent of Twins fans are either bored or annoyed at having him back.

But in any case, Odorizzi was a free agent acquisition, as was Pineda. These are facts. And I agree Odorizzi would have gotten paid if he didn’t take the QO.

Nope, not Derek Falvey. I just appreciate what they’ve done so far and realize the winter is only about half over.

We were told this regime was different. They would be aggressive when the window was open. Then they did little to supplement a clear play-off team at the deadline, refusing to part with ANY top 15 prospects and now they've sat by as the pitching they need goes elsewhere. We were duped again.

The only player that is off the board that I was hoping for is Wheeler.  We were not getting Cole, Strasberg, Rendon so the fact that they signed means little to me. We are not getting Donaldson.  I think the Twins will try and sign one of Bumgartner, Ryu or Keuchel and if they fail they try and trade. They are still in position to have a good off season. I am not going to the bridge yet.  It is only December and ONE guy signed that we wanted and he received $20 million more than anyone projected, The White Sox outbid the Phillies and did not get him. At that point I think they did the right thing to pass. We are not one player away like the Yankees.

Um, the FO left themselves in position to have Berrios y nada entering the off season.

Um, We are now essentially sitting with the same team that got absolutely steam rolled in the playoffs minus Gibson with an at best even swap at backup catcher.

Uh, A chief rival added an absolute stud to their rotation.

Um, they misread the market early and failed to sign a second level pitcher before all the losers of the first level entered the competition to drive up prices.

So, um, uh, yeah, based on the goal of winning a WS, this off season is is a failure to date so far, albeit with a little time left on the clock for a hail marry signing.

If the goal is a 90 +/- 5 win team that gets pantsed in the 1st round of the playoffs.... then they are absolutely crushing it!
