Front Page: Official Twins Winter Meetings Day 4 Thread

Something I've been thinking about but just officially confirmed....

I think mentally, one of the benefits for Asian players playing on the West Coast is the amount of flights that can get them directly to their home country. Makes sense. I thought I remembered a new route from MSP to ICN (Seoul, South Korea) being talked about, and sure enough, in April of 2019 Delta started a new direct daily flight between the two cities. That might seem like a small thing, but I bet it's actually something that may significantly help sway Ryu off of the west coast.

Also, it would help with getting Korean Ryu fans to and from some of the games they may want to see in person.

We also shouldn't completely neglect the little increase in marketing opportunities by having one of the few active South Korean players.

I'm in for 3/72

We even have a "sister team" in Korean baseball (in nickname, at least) in the LG Twins! (Edit: coke to prouster!)

We should have changed our name to the "Hormel Spam Fighters" to land Ohtani too.

I just saw on NHK News here in Japan that posted player Yo****omo Tsutsugo of the DeNa Baystars is interested in four teams: the Blue Jay's, the Pale Hose, the Tigers and the Twins. They usually get this info directly from the player, so I'm sure this is correct. (He's a left-handed power hitter, who hits to all fields. He hit .272 last year. He strikes out but also takes his share of BBs. He's quite strong and a better fielder than Cron.

I wonder if the trade rumors for Rosario would lead to enough payroll space to add Ryu and Donaldson? Adding both players would sell lots of tickets I think.

This was exactly my thought when I saw Rosenthal’s tweet about entering the Donaldson sweepstakes. Combined, those two would be 45-50M per season, which puts payroll in the 145M range, which SHOULD be fine, but if they felt they needed to clear some payroll so they could sign a 1b, then Rosario is the most likely target

How many more years does Cruz have left? Donaldson could slide into the DH after Cruz is gone. Have heard he is a dick in the locker room

Yea hes a no sale for me because of his locker room personality, wouldn't be a good fit on a Baldelli team imo. Plus hes right handed like Sano, Cruz and Garver, so if Rosario ends up being traded would rather see a lefty to replace his bat, whether 1B, 3rd or OF. Thames would be a solid, fairly inexpensive guy to look at I think, to platoon with Garver part time against lefties

For some reason I am listening to the audio livestream of the AAA portion of the Rule 5 draft...The Twins have lost 2 minor leaguers in this portion so far:

Andriu Marin

Brian Schales

I'm a bit surprised that Jax didn't get selected in the Rule 5 draft. Overall the Twins did a great job in determining who to add and who to leave off the 40 man roster.

Yeah looks like K rate must be King for these kind of signings.  Other teams must have figured Jax's stuff wouldn't play well at the MLB level or he would have been selected.

Glad no one Grabbed Rijo that was the only one I thought might kind of hurt. I know Wander and his 4M price tag might have hurt as well but he hasn't shown much to this point yet.  Hopefully next year is his breakout year.

I know this was mentioned in one of the threads yesterday-but just wanted to further discuss it with whoever is intrigued.

There is probably no merit to Colorado trading Arenado. It is just not likely to happen...

...but...if we blew up the farm, we COULD land a franchise player in his prime. Couple of things-he has an opt out in his contract after 2021, but people are saying this could be renegotiated for an extra year added on at the end.

People were asking yesterday why we would make this trade and give up prospects to do so, when we can sign a FA and keep all of our prospects.

I suppose the answer would be because big name FA might not want to sign with us. While Arenado can stop any trade from happening, maybe he is sick of losing and would be willing to go to a winning team (in a bad division).

Having an elite defensive third baseman also takes less pressure off SS, whether it is Polanco or whoever. Can you imagine his bat in the lineup for the next 7 years!?

just dreaming.

It is so hard to be a fan of this organization when they simply sit idle. We should of easily gotten Porcello. I don't buy into the fact they are trying much at all for any decent pitchers. In fact I think they will scrape the bottom of the barrel again.

Why would we be upset not signing Porcello?  Outside of being an innings eater, he is a fairly mediocre pitcher.  2/3 seasons his FIP was above 4.60, his BB/9 and K/9 were the worst in his career last year and he had an xFIP of 5.14.  I get it that's he's only 31 and is a bounce back candidate, but I would say there is a better way of spending $10M dollars.

It's interesting how the FO has been so right on most of the guys they dropped or left unprotected that were mourned so heavily.  A quick glance at the latest production from Chargois, Burdi and Rodriguez backs them up pretty well.  Now, if you include MiLB trades, cough, cough .... Nick Anderson ... cough, cough, it doesn't look quite so shiny.

If you include the guys they selected and forced onto the active roster it looks even less palatable. I'm happy they've just stayed away from the Rule V the last few years.

Yup. Falvey and the other nine FO guys are just sitting around the hotel suite having a no pants day eating Cheetos.

If the Tigers weren't willing to take Wander Javier and do the mlb roster/rehab thing for a year, perhaps we should reset our expectations for him.

As for Jax, I've not understood how anyone thought he would be protected. I see no "apparent" upside, and the Twins now have about twenty pitchers in the minors that are probably ahead of him in some way. Not all guys who needed to be protected, but the point being, who cares?

Luis Rijo I thought would be taken, probably attesting to my ignorance of what's good-looking and what's not. His K rate also is not excellent, though I thought it possible someone would see potential in that stat for him. Heh, potential for increasing a stat that is merely a predictive measure...that's stretching it for sure.
