Front Page: Passan: Twins to Sign Catcher Alex Avila

Recommended Posts

The difference is that Garver was a prospect who by definition had some untapped potential. Clearly, the organization saw him as a potential starter. Avila was brought in for the express purpose of backing Garver up for one season.

The winter meetings haven’t even happened yet. There’s a lot of off season left.

Yeah, and let's not pretend that we were even all that excited about Garver when he first came up either. The guy was the 19th CATCHER selected in the 2013 draft. I don't remember a single person saying they thought he was a future star. I'm not sure he ever made the org's top 10 prospects rankings, and if so, barely.

Best to sit back and enjoy rather than to form strong outlooks about these players. You never know when you're going to get the next Garver or the next Oswaldo Arcia.

Agreed. Garver has had a pretty unusual career to this point. He came up late and his bat has gone way beyond what anyone thought it would be.

And I think it’s unnecessarily stressful to worry about these small moves. They don’t need to improve on the bottom few guys on the roster. They need to maintain their depth and add to the top. This move maintains depth.

Good signing, anyone know his throw out rate against base stealers?

Ok, but to be actually helpful :) ... b-r.com shows his career rate at 30%, and for the past several years he's been close to that value, except that this past season he threw out 11 of 21 attempts for 52%. That's your Small Sample Size for ya. NL average in 2019 was 26%, so he seems at least average in this regard. As always, pitchers have a lot to say about whether a catcher can throw anybody out.

And Castro fell off a cliff offensively over the final months. My eyeballs weren't all that impressed with his defense either. I wonder if that entered into the FO's thinking at all.

I don't disagree with you, but Avila really fell off as well - 40.7% K and 69 wRC+ in the 2nd half. With his age, it's a bit concerning.

I was excited. I wanted him up and playing, even more. Certainly didn't expect last year, but he's always been a good hitter.
