1500espn's Phil Mackey writes that the Twins may take another stab at LHP Mark Buehrle this offseason. He has a couple of years left on the free agent contract he signed with the Miami Marlins last offseason, and I would think that the Twins would insist that the Marlins pick up some of the contract. And then it would be a matter of which prospect(s) the Twins would have to give up as well. Left-handed. He's been a given for 200 innings for years.

What do you think?

Yes, strikeout pitchers are grand and all, but let's be realistic here folks; we're not going to be able to assemble a staff full of Verlanders between now and spring training. So there is some wisdom in contemplating ways to improve the rotation that are actually within the realm of possibility.

And it's not like Buehrle can't strike people out. He had 125 K's last year. Not exactly an eye-popping number, but it's more than any Twins pitcher had. Plus the fact that he doesn't win by overpowering people makes it a lot more likely that he's got a few good years left in him.

The Twins need guys who can pitch well enough to eat innings and give them a chance to win. Buehrle fits that bill. Plus in terms of a veteran to rub off on Diamond, Gibson and some of the other younger guys, you could do a lot worse than Mark Buehrle.

A rotation of Buerle, a healthy Scott Baker, a healthy Marcum, Scott Diamond not regressing, and Gibson for for most of the year could produce a very winning regular season team. The asking price for Buerle is the problem. The near major league ready high upside prospects the Twins have are few. The Twins would have to eat some salary. The alternative is an empty Target Field.

Phil Mackey = Sid Hartman

Take an opinion, a couple of loosely related facts, write it as a story. Nowhere does he state the Twins ARE interested in Buerhle, just that he thinks the might be. He gets paid for writing this? I would think the Twins might be interested in acquiring ANY pitcher they believe would help their team. That probably constitutes about 75% of the current starters in all of baseball.

Would they take Revere and Parmelee? The Marlins have a need for a 1B. If that was all we gave up and maybe a low level prospect and the Marlins ate 20 million of the contract I would do that in a heartbeat. I don't know Miami's need for OF's they may want one of Hick/ Arcia instead of Revere and that makes this proposal lopsided unless Miami thows in something else. Depending on the cost there are other P's to be had too. But having 2 players at the league minimum for the next 2-3 years will allow Miami to eat 20 million in salary as know they would be paying about 4 million for each for the next 3 seasons.

Why should the Twins give up any young talent OR pay big $ for a 33 year-old who makes the pretty suspect Twins defense get 80% of his outs? Buerhle and the other low K/9 guys make no sense unless the Twins get back to their old multiple gold glove ways. Radke/Milton/Mays can get the job done when Koske/Guzman/Rivas/Mientkiewicz are standing behind them. The top 5 defensive days for the Twins are long gone. Instead of paying that contract and/or giving up prospects, use the money on the Peavy/Haren/Marcum types. Sub 7.0 K/9 need not apply.
