Poaching Coaches - Spinning a Negative into a Positive

With the recent news of:

Derek Shelton being named Pirate Head Coach

Jeremy Hefner being named Mets Pitching Coach

James Rowson being named Marlin Bench Coach and “Offensive Coordinator”

Peter Fatse being named Red Sox Assistant Hitting Coach

Tanner Swanson being named Yankees Major League Catching and Quality Control Coach

One could:

Get depressed and wonder silently, unless you enjoy odd looks from cubicle workers, whether our hometown 9 will ever reach 100 wins again?

Frantically lament on Twins Daily your disappointment in the Front Office

Predict bottom feeding and/or garbage bin scrounging in Free Agency once again

YOUR MINNESOTA TWINS ARE THE DESTINATION ORGANIZATION OF PROFESSIONAL SPORTS

Think of it...

Are you sitting around your parents house wondering how that degree in Advanced Statistical Interpretation and Dance will help you pay off that private school student loan that's been due for the last 6 months?

Have you realized that your Economics Degree hasn't made you any better at predicting the Market than the next guy and you can no longer rely on $8/trade commissions to pay for your house on Lake Minnetonka?

The best of the up-and-coming Analytical Masters will flock to Target Field knowing that one season of successful data implementation will lead to rapid advancement and placement in larger/warmer climates with massive increases in pay

Falvey will have the pick of litter...the cream of the crop...the 1%ers (or is it the 99%ers I can never remember which one is on top) Drivelining their way to his office

The more coaches/advisors/coordinators/analytical interpreters that leave the Twins Organization the more will want to work here...now if it only worked for dominant starters and 16 year old international superstars

The Reddit ad campaign has already been put in play..."Twins Staff, Get to Know 'Em RIGHT NOW cause they won't be here for long"

The recent raid of the staff tells me Falvey and Levine or aggressive, progressive, and good at identifying quality people.

The losses are a form of compliment. I hate losing these guys, but have confidence they will do an equally good job of hiring/promoting replacements.

Remember when nobody knew who Rowson and Johnson were?

You don’t want your organization to be everyone else’s “minor league” for coaching either or simply a spring board for aspiring coaching and front office talent. It’s great to identify and cultivate talent but you can’t possibly replace it at this level year after year and not have some fallout. Hoping this won’t be the norm going forward.

if other teams poach your coaches year after year, doesn’t that imply success year after year? I’m ok with that.

If being a coach/manager factory is the cost of winning World Series after World Series I’m very ok with that. Look at Amazon

As soon as we win a World Series I’ll agree

The Rays got raided last year and it didn't seem to hurt them too badly. It's just our turn. I wouldn't thing this will be a yearly thing.

However... When we lose coaches, it gives us a chance to raid other organizations to replace them and when you raid other organizations... you get new ideas walking in the door with them.

And if you have an organization that listens, that welcomes new ideas...  this will make you stronger because you get to add to what the previous coach left behind.

I don't see any negative personally unless they hire people with no new ideas.

“Frantically lament”

This choice of words suggest people aren’t being rational. Where is that happening here?

I don’t know if one can broad brush plain old criticism as a “frantic lament”

Not with the people posting here

I think this place is rather tame in that department whereas things could be easily a lot more harsh about (once again) being swept out of the first round, with us now entering a historic place in regard to playoff futility.

In spite of the 101 wins I feel there is still something broken in the culture of this organization. One needs to look no further than Baldelli’s “I’m not frustrated at all” reaction to this last playoff sweep. That says a lot to me when you consider he embraced winning the division, celebrated with zest and spoke about how this is what you play for. It reminded me of the last 3 and out against the Yankees where we were non competitive and Cuddyer says we had a “successful season”

(Months later he was talking about accountability issues)

I think too much is put on “having fun” and more emphasis should be put on being a professional. “Having fun” all the time is baloney. It’s totally unreasonable to have that expectation out of life. Happiness is in achievement. This organization is content to fall back on winning the division and calling it a day. That’s not much of an achievement for a 101 win team.

These guys can reshuffle the deck if they want but if we keep playing that same card game nothing will change. One man’s opinion and I think it was expressed in a pretty even tone. Nothing “frantic” simply a criticism

I think Falvey and Levine had a great offseason last year, but they didn’t solve the culture issue. There appeared to be a very high satisfaction level with the players and that is a good thing until we got to the playoffs. If cleaning out these coaches and bringing in new ones helps take a step away from the “content to contend” mindset I am all for that.

Let me be clear that this doesn’t mean I want guys throwing tantrums and acting out. I don’t want that at all. I’d just rather not have people acting like they are perfectly fine with losing 3 straight and proclaiming to everyone that they are still satisfied with the season.

It seems pretty fraudulent to have hearty celebrations when we win the division and then act like it’s all good when we get rolled like patsies in the first round. Maybe temper the jocularity after winning the division next time?
