11/20/19 is Deadline for Rule 5 protection.

Currently the Twins have 8 open spots to use if they so choose to protect that many. I would expect them to add 6 now for sure. The could take Poppen & Hildenberger off there as well.

I have seen a list of players that need to be protected or possibly lose them but don't have the knowledge to decide who stays protected.

I don't know how rule 5 works, I know that if you take a guy for the rule 5 draft that he needs to remain on the 25 man roster all year. But I don't know who qualifies to be picked in a rule 5 draft and who does not?

This probably isn't the "in the know" way to do it, but Fangraphs shows Rule 5 eligibility at the top of the player's page.  That's how I check.

Edwar Colina =  Dec'20 Eligible

I think Duran is a lock.  Jax is likely.

Depends on what the Twins think of Blankenhorn if they decide to add him.  Is he gonna have a decent eye and hit or is he going to regress a little?  2nd base is already locked up so he won't have a path there.  I know he has played third but I don't believe he played it well.  Left field looks crowded as well.  Not sure where he fits long term so they might not add him.

I know Raley is not in the top 30 and his K rate is a bit high but IMO he is close to major league ready and a pretty versatile player.  I think that if they don't add him he will get taken by one of the clubs that will be bottom feeders this year.  Whether he can make it at that level or not I don't know but if I were a club likely to be at the bottom he is player that would make sense to try and grab.  Nice power, position versatility, decent arm and a good OBP in AAA.  Perfect 26th man IMO.  Twins might not see it the same way but I would protect him.

If they leave Chalmers off he might get taken.  His WHIP is bad though and those guys typically don't stick but I wouldn't be surprised if a team took a chance on him.  Personally I would not add him but we'll see what happens.

Celestino and Macial are too young to help a club this year so I don't see them being added. Celestino might be able to play good enough defense to warrant being taken but a year basically on the bench would not help him and he could end up just being 4th outfielder material so pretty risky for a club to take him IMO.  Javier was bad in A ball why would a MLB team want him?  If he doesn't improve this year might not even be much of a prospect anymore.  I would not add him.

That is my two cents.  I guess we will know more tomorrow.

Not sure if the 26th roster spot will make it more likely a player gets drafted and stashed for a season.  But I think you can risk not protecting a guy like Chambers.  Sure his arm is electric, but he's no where near ready to spend a season in the big leagues.

Players who are subject to the Rule 5 Draft, if left unprotected;

Caleb Hamilton

Zander Wiel

Travis Blankenhorn

Brian Schales

Yeltsin Encarnacion

Wander Javier

Luke Raley

Gilberto Celestino

Trey Cabbage

Grffin Jax

Jhoan Duran

Dakota Chalmers

Andro Curura

Tyler Watson

Luis Rijo

Lachlan Wells

Jake Reed

Adam Bray

Tom Hackimer

Jonathan Cheshire

Jovani Moran

Johan Quezada

Ryan Mason

Hector Lujan

Moises Gomez

I think only about 5-6 of these guys need to be protected. Raley, Jax and Duran are probably the most ML ready.  Don't really want to risk losing Javier or Celestino.  Both are young enough that they could afford to languish for a season as a defensive replacement in the bigs, before resuming their minor league development.  All reports say both have ++ tools.

My guess is Duran, Chalmers, Colina, Blankenhorn, Javier, and Celestino get added with Jax, Raley, and Maciel on the the borderline.

I don’t think Colina needs to be protected this year. He is not eligible to be drafted in the rule 5 this year.

This is correct -- Colina is not eligible this winter. His first pro assignment was to the DSL Twins in 2016, and he signed in 2015 after the DSL season ended. So 2016 counted as his first Rule 5 draft, and he's protected until his 5th, which will be in December 2020.

With those 8 spots there is hopefully a SP and a RP to add. Maybe 2 each by some method.

Chalmers, Maciel, and Celestino  have not played above A+, They are not seen as above 40FV by Fangraphs. Blankenhorn has Miranda, Lewis, and Arraez ahead of him. There may not be a need to protect them. Raley has Rooker and every corner outfielder ahead of him. In the system he may not need to be protected. Jax is a possibility to be added as well as Duran and Javier. A lot of who gets protected goes on by what you would perceive teams would do. Expanded rosters may allow teams to stash a pitcher. Flat out tanking teams might take fliers on up to three like San Diego did a couple of years ago.  Pitching is always at a premium. They might not outright Hidenberger, Popen or Harper until after the draft for when they need a spot. Fourth to go might be Gordon. Of course Gordon and Rosario are going to bring back that ACE pitcher, thus opening another roster spot  (said tongue in cheek). I think some people are going to gnash a little bit on how few they add.

I believe Tyler Wells needs to be added to this list too.. He would have been in the rotation mix this year had it not been for TJS... so I have to think he's protected.

Personally, I'm a little surprised Harper and Hildenberger are still protected. Or did I miss something recently?

Like most years, this is a tough decision I'm glad I don't have to make.

I think Jax gets protected, despite limited experience. I see him as a potential fast riser.

I like Raley, despite a seeming glut of OF/1B types. His 2018 was good and he had a hell of a start last season before injury. The Twins seemed to think enough of his potential to even put him in CF a lot last ST to see what he could do. I'd like to keep him personally.

I'd also like to keep Blankenhorn. He's a tease at this point. So much potential and versatility, even though he's a work in progress. He may never reach his potential, but could also be a 5 position utility guy with overall skills in a year or two, if not more. Could absolutely see a losing club stash him for potential.

Wells is an interesting case coming off surgery. Stashing someone not yet ready is one thing. Stashing someone coming off surgery is an even bigger longshot. Not sure he gets protected.

Javier is much the same. Would the Twins dare to leave such a talented player left unprotected? But he's obviously not ready yet.

Chalmers is much the same as those above. How much do you believe in his future?

Duran is a given.

Seems like a strange scenario when you have so many guys to consider based on health and potential vs feeling they are close.

with the new 26th man and limit to 13 pitchers, the extra man for many teams might be a blankenhorn type.

That 26th man spot is good for baseball. It provides depth for all teams, whether it be an additional pitcher, position player, or stashed player. And Blenkenhorn could be the exact type of player that might be stashed if not protected.

There is no way to predict if he would be selected, much less stashed. And no way to predict if he would turn out to be a real loss if that were to happen. And while is a notch down in the system, I think about the loss of Niko Goodrum a couple years ago to the Tigers. He has turned out to be a pretty decent, versatile, but not great player. Or loss. He probably would have contributed to the Twins in 2018, but done little, presumably, in 2019 except as an injury fill in. But sometimes, you will lose players like that and you have to take your chances.

I'd really hate to lose Blenkenhorn as the potential is there to be a really nice roll player, if nothing else. But you have to take your chances, make decisions, and hope you guess right more often than you guess wrong. If your system is a good and deep one, these kind of decisions are a good kind of problem to have.

I don't get this tough decision stuff. How many good players have they lost because they weren't protected? I think fans way over rate this.
