Streaming fatigue

What are your services? How much is too much?

Netflix, Prime, Hulu, Disney Plus in my house, and I’m ready to trim one down.

I’m trying to cut Netflix, but my wife clings to it. Maybe work Hulu on the temporary fashion rather than the ongoing over the last couple years.

How did you come to consensus with your SO? It was easy to cut the cord. $100 per month that only I watched didn’t take much salesmanship. $13 per month that I’m not sure how much my wife consumes but I never ever watch or $8 per month that I rarely watch is a more delicate discussion...

I'm very conscious about the streaming platforms I pay for and rotate quite a bit over the year.

The reason I cut the cord in the first place many years ago was to have a cheaper alternative to cable. Now if you're not careful you can end up spending $100+ a month for streaming alone!

Netflix $12

Showtime $11

Hulu (no ads) $13

HBO Now $15

Amazon Prime $9

Disney + $7

ESPN + $7

Apple TV $5

All of it adds up quickly... I'm sure I'm forgetting some services on the list.

I have netflix.. get Hulu for free via Sprint and I don't use that... Have enough trouble keeping up with Netlfix... Might do Disney+ at some point just to watch all the new star wars content as well as some of the Marvel stuff that will go there, but not really until there's a lot more of it...and even then for a short time.

Yeah, I don't think this ends well. Lots of people getting into it (CBS for example).. and I don't see the content ultimately being worth it.

I really hate that we still have cable but we're in rural MN so to get internet for our home, it's cheapest to bundle with cable TV from Spectrum (the most hated company in America!) So we have netflix and Dis+, although we got Dis+ at a discount from Disney and prepaid for it already so it's not really a monthly expense anymore.

I'm trying to price alternatives to having cable but haven't found one that is substantially cheaper yet.

My wife and I are frugal when it comes to tv. We get one service free for some reason, which I won't name..

Disney is bundled with our phone bill for a year, after that, unless I'm back to making a lot of money, we'll cancel that after a year.

We get Prime for her work and house stuff, if it was only the tv, we might cancel it. That said, we probably watch this one the most, so I'll probably keep this one.

We have Netflix, but I'm considering cancelling it at this point. I'd miss a few shows, but there is no show I would regret not watching on any channel.

I would like to watch Star trek, but my life seems pretty good even though I'm not....

The one I consider adding is BBC America. But again, oh well. I'm fine without it.

We use an antenna to get local channels in glorious HD.

I got YouTube TV after the playoffs this year.

At that point, I cancelled my Cable.

I have Amazon Prime.

I have 'my sister's' Netflix account too.

I canceled Hulu about 5-6 months ago. There just wasn't much on there that I really enjoyed once The Path got canceled.

We discussed it the other night. We're going to have Prime (keep it for reasons other than the streaming), Disney, and one of the TV packages (Vue, YouTubeTV, Sling, etc.). Netflix will become like HBO Max and CBS for us, which are apps that we pay for for 1-2 months at a time and stream heavily during that time, then drop again.

Similar strategy here. Currently it's YouTube TV for the "traditional" cable, Prime (I would drop Prime video if it didn't come included in the shipping benefits), and Netflix.

I bundle DSL through my cell phone provider and save a bunch

I'm down to Prime, D+, and Hulu. I plan to cancel Hulu soon.

I'll always keep Prime because of the shipping that goes along with it. I bought 36 months of D+ for $150.

The rest I will subscribe/unsubscribe as necessary. Now that I've axed Netflix, my rotation is:

HBO Now

Netflix

Hulu

Acorn TV

BritBox

I'm probably missing something in there but that's what I can think of right now. I literally subscribe to one of them, then cancel ten minutes later, which gives me 30 days to watch what I want. If I don't notice it expired, good. If I still want to watch more, I repeat the process and get another 30 days.

As a result, my streaming bill is rarely over $25/mo.

Considering Vue is ending on Jan. 30, 2020, I'm not sure it matters anymore! :)

Edit to add: I've heard nothing but good things about YouTubeTV, if you need a streaming TV package. Good quality, unlimited DVR, and some account sharing.

The shame of it is that Vue was the one streaming service that offered both MLB Network and NFL Network (among a number of other unique pairings to their service).

I had Vue for a long time... RIP. I took advantage of NFL Network Red Zone channel being available and miss having it on Sundays.

I encourage everyone to stop spending so much time watching shows, and more time reading and improving themselves. I feel that streaming services have a direct correlation on our society's inability to comprehend information, and the growing obesity epidemic.

Turn off the TV. Ride a bike. Run a trial. Pick up a fishing rod. Read a book. Row a boat. Hit the slopes. Brap a snowmobile. Whatever. Streaming services are enslaving us. Be free.

I agree some people watch more than is likely good for them, but this isn't that thread, is it?

It is about streaming fatigue....

Think what you want Brock. I think Americans watch too much TV. I think it is a contributing factor to obesity. I'm just suggesting alternatives.

Gee. Thanks. I never would have thought of those. It's not like I moved to a state where I can hike and golf year round, or even ski every month, technically. Thanks!

I had no idea Vue was ending.  You figured they'd let their customers know.

I didn't mention, but I've been streaming as much or more on the PBS app on my Roku as any other app on the device. My kids enjoy things like Nova and musicals, my boy loves Motor Week, my wife and I enjoy the new Retro Report along with Frontline, and SDPB does excellent stuff on Native American history in the state, so for a very reasonable donation on the year to keeping up public broadcasting, we have access to the backlog of all these great programs from the past to assist in our children's exploration of their Native background.

As far as streaming being a matter of sitting too much. I'm a writer, and I write with streaming on in the background oftentimes. I couldn't write as I walk. It just doesn't work for my process. The majority of literature I've read has pointed to significant increases in sitting time at school and at work as a larger contributor to increasing obesity than home viewing, as few truly sit stationary as they have a program on.

Reading that comments section is brutal. The marketing angle is right on, though. People are in the thread complaining about purchasing a PlayStation just to use Vue. The two should never have been linked. Calling it Sony Vue or Vue by Sony or whatever would have been so much better, but alas...

I had vue on my appletv and iPhone. I didn’t need my PS hardware to use it.

As far as I could tell, it wasnt strictly Sony media like D+ is strictly Disney. They may have wanted to be less tied to the Sony publishing. I cancelled vue for much the same reason I cut the cord. I didn’t use it enough.
