Front Page: Multiple Teams Are Interested in Kyle Gibson. Should the Twins Be?

Recommended Posts

1 year, incentive laden contract with a team option for a second year is the best way for the Twins to handle this unknown quantity. The Twins know Gibson's demeanor and his work ethic, but no one, and I do mean no one, can predict with certainty how he will hold up due to his disease, I don't care what "someone" said the Cleveland Clinic ( I assume a  doctor who is a specialist in this disease and who has extensively examined Gibson and his health records and based on hundreds of other patients and consultation and medical studies) reported.

Gibby (no offense to him) is very over rated in the national rankings. That just is what it is.

I'm not itching for Gibson back, but I suspect there's a proximity bias here. Most likely you'd feel the same about everyone ranked below Gibson had you watched them pitch for the Twins the last half decade as well.

I'd take him back. As long as it's in the plan that he is a #4-5 guys and can be demoted or DFAed if he's not working out. I wouldn't sign him to a multi year deal though with that illness hanging over his head.

That said, Kyle is a great guy and even if he isn't the best pitcher, he's great in the community, around kids, etc.

Given all the teams looking for pitching the Twins will be lucky to come away with two mid-tier arms via free agency or trade. They need to keep all options open, including Gibson. Realistically, the Twins rotation will probably be Berrios, Dobnak, two via free agents or trades, and another internal option for the last spot.

Agree. Many are predicting/dreaming of the Twins making many major moves this off season. I don't see it happening. I look for the resigning of Odorizzi and Pineda and a backup catcher and a couple of internal options filling out the rotation. These will cost close to 30mil anyway.

Sorry, the idea of the Twins investing 70-80 mil in trades and FA's doesn't line up with our history. It isn't happening.

Only Berrios is better at this point. I have no idea what that first sentence means. The other guys might eventually be better, but not one of them is as ready to help win baseball games as a healthy Gibson to start the season next year.

You would say Gibson is better than Odorizzi?  I don't know about that one

Way past time to move on from Gibson. Over the years he has been obstinate in refining his mechanics and nibbling incessantly. Twins can and will do much better not signing KG. Some team will overpay for KG and end up regretting paying him the $$$. Tigers don’t change their stripes.

I think the reason why teams are interested is because they see the high swing-and-miss rate he has and teams think they can fix up the warts. Despite the "nibbler" reputation he has here, he only had a 3.2 BB/9 and also has that same mark for his whole career. It's hard to predict how he'll do with his condition, but he'll be a quality option if he's healthy.

I'd rather not take on that risk, and I wish him luck with whatever team signs him.

This tweet smells funny. Looks like Gibson's agent is leaking this info in order to stir up a bidding war....I'm guessing every free agent pitcher has 10 teams kicking the tires on him.

Ditto.

I'll never say never. If you would have asked me in September, I think I would've said I expect him back, just because it makes some sense for both teams. But at this point, I only want him back as either a #5 starter (which blocks Dobnak, Smeltzer, etc.) or maybe as a #4 starter if they end up with one of the top five FAs on the market.

And I see no reason to rush this. If he's scooped up by someone before February, so be it. There are another 5-10 starting pitchers that "could be good if...." guys on the market to replace him.

I know stats and analytics are as hot as Hansel right now, but Gibson just doesn't pass the eye test for me, personally. It's a slog to make it through one of his starts.

He's an awesome guy, and not a bad pitcher, but I personally would like to move on from the Gibson experience.

Jake is still an option. We can’t say they’ve moved on from him. Do you think Gibson is better?

the Twins have to find at minimum 3 starting pitchers who are currently not on the roster, and preferably 4.

Odorizzi and Gibson are both options, but neither of which are currently signed https://mobile.twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/1195023702955479047?s=20 .

The FO can’t ignore second and third tier starters because they only want the top tier. The players need to come in non-sequential.

If you get Odo on the qualifier (not done yet) and Gibby on a 1 year cheap deal, that’s a good floor to build on as you go after the harder fish to catch.

Especially because there's a good chance most of the top tier don't sign until late in the winter, at which point if you don't get one, you're left with nothing.

This. Cole won't sign until after Strasburg, most likely. And unless Stras re-ups early with Washington, it will be January .....

The Twins have better younger and cheaper options at this point; Gibson is 32 and at the downturn of his career.

Call me disappointed that the Twins kept running out Gibson last year when there were better younger pitchers than him.

Besides Berrios, who are these better younger pitchers? Currently they don't have Odo or Pineda on the team.

With that being said I am not a big fan of him returning (I could see him going to the Cardinals and being great, similar to what Lohse did), unless they don't go out and get two pitchers plus Odo.

Shocked that his market is heating up this early in the winter...

This early of a signing makes me think national projections (MLBTR at least) for Gibson's free agent stock was probably too high, and at least in this case, Twins fans' perspective might have been more accurate.

What's everyone's predictions? I'll go with 1 year at $8M with a $10M option for 2021.

But it is the Rangers, they might have done something wacky like 3/36M.

3 years for 30 million, so your prediction was pretty close. More than I would pay. Gibby will be 35 when the contract is done?
