Raisel Iglesias - Potential Trade Option?

The Reds have been open to trading him the last couple of seasons. In 2017/2018 it was more of needing to be "blown away" by an offer to do it. Last year the window was open again at the trade deadline, but no one bit.

Perhaps now is the time to think about buying low on him. He's coming off his worst season of his career, but set a career best in K rate. HRs did him in last year.

He has 2 years of control left at $9 million for 2020, $9.125 million in 2021.

Given that there will be competition for Will Smith, and draft compensation tied to his signing, perhaps going the trade route is better to find a shut down reliever to partner with Rogers.

Thoughts?

Why do you think the Reds would sell low on him now? They seem to have bought for 2019 and 2020 already (Gray, Bauer). They've got other good, young, cheap pieces, and Iglesias's contract doesn't suggest a problem for the Reds finances. I'd guess they are more than happy to enter 2020 with him and hope he rebounds, either helping fuel a return to contention or restoring some of his former luster for a deadline trade.

Could be. I had the thought because he's been rumored to be available the last couple of years. Eventually those guys do get traded (Archer, Gray, Bauer, etc.)

JMO but I don't think the Reds are particularly close to contending. The Cardinals and Cubs are still ahead of them in the pecking order.

And the old adage that they can get more value in return for 2 years of control vs. 1.5, 1, etc.

Given his down year, Iglesias makes a lot of sense as a rebound candidate, but since Cincinnati plans on competing next year I’m guessing it would take a significant overpay to get a deal done (probably Balazovic and Jeffers). Since I envision another mediocre season for Cincinnati 2020, it’s likely we’ll be having the same discussion next offseason.

I might agree, but it's not clear the Reds would agree. (And to be fair, they're far from hopeless too -- Suarez, Gray, Castillo, Bauer, Senzel, etc.)

If someone thinks they are "buying low" on him now, as you say, I'm not sure this matters. A good first half in 2020 could easily maintain or increase his trade value leading up to next year's deadline (or, like I said, help support a Reds return to contention).

That's fair, although they weren't necessarily "buy low" kind of deals. (Perhaps they should have been, given what Archer and Bauer have done after their trades, or what Gray did in NY!)

They're certainly not hopeless... That's the Pirates in their division!

If I were the Reds I'd try to build for 2021/22 when the Cubs are potentially losing their star core players Bryant, Rizzo, Baez, and Schwarber.

I think the Cubs pitching *might* be suspect enough the Reds don't necessarily have to "wait" until 2021/22, though.

But I also endorse trading closers, especially with fairly high salaries, if a team can get good value. I just wouldn't necessarily salary dump him / flip him for spare parts, as that probably hurts 2020 without really helping 2021/22.

What kind of package did you have in mind?

If I’m the Reds GM. I’m adding this season.

They have a good young core and depth.

The Pirates are going to struggle hard, the Brewers have holes springing up and the Cubs are cap challenged. The Cards are in the best shape but not a slam dunk.

I’d say the door is starting to open for the Reda so they might as well walk in.

And they took the first step in the door when they traded for Bauer.
