$80 mil of Strasburg's $245 mil is deferred.

Will be interesting to see what they calculate as the "present day value" for luxury tax purposes. His last contract had $70 mil deferred, reducing its "present day value" from $175 mil to $162 mil.

His opt-out actually cost him significant deferred money. It was a major gamble that he did win. The Nationals won their case with the Orioles this winter and will receive not only a 9-figure total compensation from the Orioles over the previous years lost in broadcasting revenue but their upcoming years should be significantly better as well, though it's hard to budget that right now as they've never experienced life with a fair and equitable television deal in their shared portion of their market.

I guess I'm just getting sick of the deferred money jokes as the Nats aren't doing it just to avoid the luxury tax. They've legitimately been in a legal battle over their primary source of income for their organization the last few seasons, and until that was resolved, deferments were a wise business decision for the team and player.

I'm not sure what you mean by this -- Strasburg will still get all of the deferred money he earned through 2019 on his previous deal ($30 mil), even if it hasn't been paid out yet.

My joke has nothing to do with the Nats intentions -- just that they frequently defer a lot of money, that's all.

Yup, worth it if they can now sign Rendon or Cole or two good starting pitchers....otherwise, not so much.

The Angels were $58 mil under the luxury tax threshold before dumping Cozart -- I don't think they really needed to move him to add anyone, if it was a bad baseball move.

Of course, it could be a good baseball move -- maybe they've grown pessimistic on their draft pick. Although it's been so quick, that would call into question their drafting acumen too...

they might not be willing to go that high, teams, I'm told, have budgets :)

Strasburg had deferred money in the part of his contract that he opted out of - that's what I mean.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Dodgers and Indians "continue to be engaged in serious trade talks" involving Francisco Lindor.

Nightengale says the Indians are seeking both INF prospect Gavin Lux and RHP prospect Dustin May from Los Angeles.

Cleveland trying to be like the Rays....but no other team has cracked that code.....

Yeah, looks like they're talking Dustin May and Gavin Lux for Lindor so far? At least Lux hasn't developed as expected. Oh, wait, .607 was his SLG.?!? I thought that was his OPS.....

Tanner Roark signs with the Blue Jays 2/$24 mill per Jon Heyman on the Twitter machine.

That is madness - 2.0 WAR isn't great, and we are talking the last 2 seasons combined.

This for a guy that averages 7.3K/9.

Even 24 for 2 years seems a lot, given what the Twins gave Pineda.
