With the end of the World Series looming so is the annual 40 man roster moves to protect prospects from the Rule 5 draft, the official start of free agency and lots of anticipated and talked about possible transactions. Today came the first actual transactions in preparation with the DFA’s of Torreyes, Miller, and LaMarre:

I don’t think any of these are surprising but let’s take a moment to thank them for their contributions. Thank you gentlemen.

So what’s next? Who will be added and protected in the next 3-5 days and who will not be added? Here’s a new thread to discuss what actually goes down.

There will be more DFAs (some may be a bit surprising)...

Five of the players will become free agents moments after the World Series is complete.

The Martin Perez decision needs to be made.

Sean Poppen and Byron Buxton will be removed from the 60 Day IL.

The Twins will have some tough Tender/Non-Tender decisions...

(Offseason Handbook plug)

I'll be writing up my 40-man roster adds article this week as well.

I think we’ll see some other names like Stewart, Hildy, and Harper get DFAd soon. They have some room to create for the new 40 man adds and for some free agents.

It's a balancing act really because you want to protect the guys that you value and just don't want to lose... But you can't just add 10 players because those 10 can't be removed from the 40-man until spring training, so you have to be able to keep some open spots for free agents, or even have some 40-man roster guys who remain droppable too.

My best guesses:

Castro gone (FA)

Gibson gone (FA)

Schoop gone (FA)

Perez gone (FA)

Rosario gone (trade)

Romero gone (trade)

Cron gone (non-tender)

Stewart gone (outright)

Harper gone (outright)

Hildy (outright)

Dyson (60-day DL)

Leaves you with 14 spots open..probably add 8-10, and the rest go to FA

Some may be a bit surprising? Do you have an inside scoop, or based on things you've 'heard'? Or do you say that because we usually are surprised by some moves and non-moves?

Things I've heard... but not inside scoop stuff.. It will all just depend on how many guys they feel they need to add and then how free agency and such go.

Also, historically, there are almost always 1 or 2 than are a bit surprising.

Honestly, there's almost always a surprise somewhere... Front offices look at prospects a whole lot different than us amateurs.

Twins claimed a Matt Wisler (reliever for Mariners) off waivers. Hasn’t really ever been good, but must have some potential.

He’s got great strikeout numbers, so I guess there’s some potential there. They will likely DFA him later and try to get him to AAA.

Won't Dyson be another non-tender? No reason to hold onto him now.

As someone who could not care less about the administrative side of MLB or other top tier sports, it is a shame that it does take a spreadsheet and or an MBA just to keep track of who is even on your team to start with. All in the interest of fairness I am sure. Unfortunately, it does look more and more like the Twins will take a couple of steps backwards in 2020. 2019 was a very fortunate combination of under the radar acquisitions and career years by several players including a journeyman catcher who had more home runs per AB than Harmon Killebrew. One of the lists on this thread shows Cron gone, Schoop gone and even Rosario gone along with Castro and others. What are the chances that the new lineup will win 101 games?

Also, don't forget the intangibles and the fact that the 2019 bunch must have had a great clubhouse relationship. Controlled improvement over a team that won 101 games for a team like the Twins is almost impossible. 2020 will be another in a long line of works in progress.
