CJ Cron Has Thumb Surgery

explains his drop in production... wonder if that changes some minds on keeping him...

Not for me. This team has a budget, and they need three starting pitchers, a backup catcher, and probably an outside relief pitcher. I'd rather see what a minor leaguer, or cheap flyer, can do and use that money on pitching. Lots of pitching.

If they parted ways with Cron, they would then need a first baseman too. I think it’s more than fair to bring back Cron while also giving Sano some time at first and ease in a young guy later in the season if warranted (Rooker or Kirilloff)

Yup, I get that. I'm willing to risk Kiriloff or Rooker or someone cheap not being good right away. I'm willing to take that chance, to save money. I won't disagree if they bring him back, unless they somehow don't spend money on good pitching after that....

Yeah, I think I'd just have an honest, short conversation with Cron's agent, tell him we like him, he was a great teammate, and we want him back on a one-year deal. However, anything higher than $6M is a dealbreaker. Our hope is that Kirilloff or Rooker can not be held back any longer, maybe not even for all of the 2020 season. Your decision. The meter's running.

It shouldn't change people's minds. He was nearly an all-star caliber guy pretty much right up until the injury and then he faltered. He had the 2 IL stints and the power was sapped and we knew that it was almost completely thumb related. So, whatever decision they should have made in late June is probably what they should do now... unless something else has changed in your mind... (like moving Sano to 1B or deciding kirilloff or rooker is ready for Opening Day, etc.

Could of quoted you or Seth on this one. He was on pace to match or eclipse his career season of 2018 before the injury. Correct me if wrong, but I believe his OPS for the first half was over .800.

He only made $4.8M in 2019. He is due some sort of raise. I think the proposed $7.7M is a bit high, though not unreasonable. I like the $6M 1yr option. I wouldn't object to a small bump. Considering he was basically let go after his '18 career season, this would be a nice raise and the chance to play with a quality team with playoff implications. Still seems like a really good fit for both parties. And really does nothing to block anyone or hinder finances for SP.

I think I would tender him a contract because it won't be too much (even if it is $7.7 million). He can provide power, and even if Kirilloff is deemed ready, there can be playing time split as Cron struggled some against right-handers. Also, Kirilloff and Rooker could play in the outfield to make sure they're getting enough playing time to justify being up.

yeah, I addressed this in my offseason blueprint... I think keeping him is the right answer.

The Twins have 57.5M coming off the books and an increase in revenue. They were also not quite maxed out on payroll last year. Of course, Rosario / Buxton / Sano / Rogers / May and Adrianza are all getting bumps. I am terrible at estimating arbitration but I think they have $70-75M minus the arbitration increases to work with for 2020 additions.

What are the estimates for our arbitration eligible players?
