Front Page: No MLB Network? Then No Game for You!

Recommended Posts

I understand your frustration, but I'd take that with a grain of salt. I know MLB Network is available on some smaller cable companies -- they even have a web site where you can check:

https://www.mlb.com/network/get-mlb-network

Was this in reference to the free preview? I could see logistical problems with trying to offer that to lots of small providers. As for regular carriage, MLB and cable providers might disagree about what tier to offer the channel on too, aside from cost.

Out of curiosity, what is your cable company?

Not in reference to a free preview. I have Sjoberg's Cable TV out of Thief River Falls. I've been asking to get MLB added for years. Today they told me they've checked and MLB will not let them even subscribe. They were told they were too small to ever get MLB network.

I saw someone earlier in this thread asking about the game in the other ALDS that is scheduled for MLB Network and if that will get a free preview. Just want to let you know that it is part of this preview as well. I would quote them but can't seem to find the post.

You Tube TV is a great value for $50 a month. It includes every sports channel I want including the Big 10 network and Tennis Channel which are usually add ons. It took me 5 minutes to sign up and can even watch it at my cabin by streaming to my phone using my unlimited data and connecting the phone into the HDMI port on the TV

I know Paul Bunyan Cable in Bemidji carries it, and I don't think that cable company is quite as big as its namesake. :)

I agree but Bemidji is roughly 80% larger than Thief River Falls. Who knows, MLB's cutoff could be somewhere in between those two populations (assuming subscriber rate across both populations are similar).

If I'm reading all of this right, as well as the information on MLB.com, I cannot just jump in and pay MLB.tv to watch this game/the playoffs?  I'm astonished.  And, apparently, naive.  And, I may not be able to spell naive correctly, even after all these years.

If I read it correctly, I'd have to pay MLB.tv $25 to stream, but also have a subscription to cable that has a MLBNetwork package?  After parsing a health insurance bill today, I'm not surprised by this.

The number one product America makes profits on is: Confusion.

I wouldn't be a Twins fan (and my boys are almost completely unaware Major League Baseball exists) if I hadn't had the Twins playoff baseball on free tv when I was 12.  The Big Three networks were quite the melting pot, back in the good old days.

What will happen tonight, is my wife will be on a device, while I'm on a device or two listening to the game and chatting with you guys, and my boys will be on a third device, streaming some sort of anime crap like Bakugan or Beyblades.

Or, I'll probably do like Number3 and just check in here and there on Gameday, while watching a movie with the family.

I know I am in a pigeon-holed minority, but I'm pretty astonished that a big baseball (Twins at least) fan like myself contributes so minimally to these enormous baseball salaries.  Whatever my subscription to the radio broadcasts costs.  I can tell you that no amount of advertising by Treasure Island Resort and Casino (yes, I can sing the jingle) will ever get me to travel to Minnesota and spend money there.
